Chan Gailey gives up on Trent Edwards

It’s only Week Three, but it’s starting to feel real late to a lot of NFL teams.

The Buffalo Bills were the latest team to change quarterbacks when Chan Gailey announced that Ryan Fitzpatrick would get the start against the Patriots this Sunday.

“We’re looking for a spark,” said Gailey.

Gailey started Edwards in every preseason game and gave him the most first team snaps throughout training camp.  Despite that, Gailey has given up on Edwards quickly, just like Dick Jauron did last year.

Edwards completed 29-of-52 passes for 241 yards with one touchdown and two picks in two games.  That’s a 4.6 yards per attempt average, which is well below his career mark.

Gailey said Fitzpatrick will be the starter moving forward; it’s not a temporary move.  (At least until they try Brian Brohm.)

Thank God. Didn’t think this would be happening until like week 4 or 5.

Ya just keep putting in the same two guys and getting no production. Give Brohm a damn chance

HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN!!!!! Way to make a decision Chan!!
Fitzy can’t hit the broadside of a barn on most intermediate throws, but he’s not afraid to chuck bombs all around the field.
Instead of Captian Checkdown standing there for six seconds waiting to toss the inevitable 3 yard pass or get crushed and take a sack.

  5. jb1996 says: Sep 20, 2010 3:20 PM

give brian brohm a shot in college the spread was his offense n buffalo is trying the spread out kinda makes sense n he needs some game experience

  6. James says: Sep 20, 2010 3:22 PM

It doesn’t matter who gets the start if the offensive line can’t keep the Quarterback standing up.

Well, at least he can say “I was in the NFL fo’ a minute…”

  12. WeezerNY says: Sep 20, 2010 3:27 PM

Chan Gailey made Thigpen look good. He just needs a guy back there that is not afraid to pull the trigger, and for some reason Trent is just perpetually gun-shy.

This has got to be the worst QB situation in the league right now!!!
That is bad considering Jason Campbell, Matt Moore, David Garrard, and Vince Young were all benched this weekend for ineffectiveness.
Not to mention all the other inept QB’s starting right now. Maybe an 18 game season is on the horizon, but the league would be much more competitive if they cut back to 30 teams to go along with that extension.

  15. i'msmartyourdumb says: Sep 20, 2010 3:28 PM

  17. RIP__21 says: Sep 20, 2010 3:32 PM

Morons should have drafted a qb with their first or second pick. Now they are stuck with three ineffective qbs and zero hope to compete for the division or a playoff spot. They also never replaced TO.
Btw CJ Spiller has nine yards from eight carries through 120 mins of football. Awesome pickup.

Come on now. Really? Trent spend the whole game running from #52. At least he lasted the game, unlike Kolb last week.
Clay is planting so many quarterbacks the field is starting to look like his own personal garden.

  20. pakasprz says: Sep 20, 2010 3:34 PM

Edwards is a complete disaster. I would rather have a quarterback overthrowing wide receivers than one not throwing at all. Yes, the offensive tackles are bad, but it doesn’t help when your quarterback doesn’t throw the football. He makes Losman look like an Pro Bowler.

  21. Matt S. says: Sep 20, 2010 3:34 PM

Too bad they’ll move out of Buffalo too.

  23. adguy2011 says: Sep 20, 2010 3:36 PM

The Bills tried to get McNabb in a trade and he refused. None of this matters. They are in re-building mode and everyone knows it..next year they will get a QB and LT and try to dig themselves out of 10 years of bad drafting and bad football management.

  24. Zeus Lizard says: Sep 20, 2010 3:39 PM

Fitz is not any better! Ralph is a cheap old SOB which is the problem! This team and its clueless GM should have brought in an NFL QB! This also shows how out of touch Gailey is after starting Trent all offseason and not realizing that he sucks! Gotta love it when you team has a cheap, senile 92 year old owner, a glorified 71 year old scout as a first time GM and a head coach who has been out of the NFL 9 of the last 10 years and lost an average of 5 games a year for a college team!
    Sell the team Ralph!

30 teams? Hell, they are going to need to cut it to 8. The QB play league wide has been less than stellar. There are not enough players to keep up with 32 teams playing 18 games plus playoffs.

  36. WNYhell5 says: Sep 20, 2010 3:54 PM

YES! Fitz stinks too, but at least he’ll take chances and can scramble.
Trent, a -2 yard pass on 4th & 11 doesn’t get it done. Thanks for playing. You can go back to Cali now.

  38. Bech72 says: Sep 20, 2010 3:57 PM

14 games from now Andrew Luck, Jake Locker or Ryan Mallet will be Buffalo’s starting QB; my guess is Luck at this point.

  39. AlanSaysYo says: Sep 20, 2010 3:58 PM

Chan was so set on his QBs that he used his 1st round pick to take a running back, the one position at which Buffalo didn’t need help.
Now he’s benching his starting QB two games into the season.
It takes a man to admit a mistake. But this mistake is ridiculous.

  40. hlywd7 says: Sep 20, 2010 3:58 PM

  44. bobinpuertorico says: Sep 20, 2010 4:17 PM

Finally! How could the Bills have stuck with Trent Edwards so long? The offensive line has been giving him a solid one to two seconds a play and he still refuses to pass 50 yards downfield. The speedy Buffalo WRs who run 50 yards in 2 seconds are being wasted. Of course the interceptions that Edwards threw against Green Bay are what sealed his doom. How dare he pass the ball through the hands of Steve Johnson or worse still, his failure to prevent Green Bay from pulling the ball from the arms of Roscoe Parrish, terrible. At least by changing to Ryan Fitzpatrick the Bills are showing that they will not be tricked into thinking they need a better offensive line.

I for one am glad this was done. Chan is leading friggin Dick Jauron’s drafting disaster and deserves a chance to make this thing right. The problem though is that we will have to wait till next year for our qb.
Why Fitz though? It would have made more sense to start Brohm to at least see what we have.
Captain checkdown is finally gone. Thank you.

Hey MedTXPack, I would take Buffalo any day over Texas. Ignorant and arrogant is no way to go through life. The food in Buffalo is awesome, the people are down to earth and great, and the Bills fans are the best in the league.
Are you having a down day after Dallas went 0 for 2? Well enjoy the feeling it will probably keep up.

  51. cuzz4169 says: Sep 20, 2010 4:41 PM

  52. clintcooper says: Sep 20, 2010 4:43 PM

Never mind the fact that Trent Edwards just had to face two of the toughest, most opportunistic defenses in the league back to back. Nevertheless, he’s not great. But neither is Ryan Fitzpatrick. Good quarterbacks are so rare.

  53. xStaticOnRadio says: Sep 20, 2010 4:46 PM

  54. drfrenchtoast says: Sep 20, 2010 4:48 PM

its not trent its the o-line. apathetic receivers don’t get open, those two ‘picks’ were poor receiving. not saying trent is peyton but nobody has a shot with that bullfighting starting line.
ralph isn’t cheap, the bills have a middle of the pack salary. the bucs are cheap. just thank god ralph is loyal enough to keep the team in buffalo idiots, he could have sold the team years ago for a mint.
lee evans can jog out routes but until he gets dropped by clay matthews on his blind side he shouldn’t open his goddamn mouth. trade an aging ‘speed’ receiver for whatever we can get…haven’t seen lee run over the middle since i don’t know when.

    #3 you’re an ignorant ass
Buffalo is a city and not a town. Most of the food that you “suck” down probably originated in Buffalo. So show some respect!
And for those that constantly remark that the Bills will move to Canada, you just have no clue. Those games in Canada never sell out so what makes you think they would move there? I could see LA potentially but Jim Kelly has a group of investors ready to act on the Bills if/when the time comes to make a decision.

  60. WingT says: Sep 20, 2010 5:25 PM

  61. watchmorebaseball says: Sep 20, 2010 5:53 PM

The Bills have nothing for years to address their offensive line problems. The last man to work on building their line was Bill Polian. Ralph decided he’d had enough – I guess he prefers mediocre to bad teams. The Bills draft running backs and defensive backs instead of filling this need. They don’t pay to hold on to their talent. They (Ralph) wouldn’t pay for a decent head coach or GM. Why does anyone wonder about Edwards or another quarterback’s inability to succeed? Pick your favorite QB; he would do little better behind the tissue paper that is getting paid to impersonate an offensive line in Buffalo.

  62. gringostroika says: Sep 20, 2010 6:03 PM

@Bech72: “14 games from now Andrew Luck, Jake Locker or Ryan Mallet will be Buffalo’s starting QB; my guess is Luck at this point.”
Almost right. I’m guessing Mallet is #1. But anyway it doesn’t mean a damn thing until they FINALLY get a real o-line. That means trading Lee Evans (& Marshawn if he’s still around) in the off-season for a couple of quality linesmen, picking up some free agent linesmen, and a couple of 2nd & 3rd round prospects. The Bills’ defense is OK, just getting pummeled after having to stay out on the field 58 minutes a game.

  63. DirtDawg55 says: Sep 20, 2010 6:16 PM

    -Brohm should be starting.
-Whitner, POZ, Maybin, C.Green, Trent, Fitz should all be cut. Today. Before midnight.
-Trade Marshawn, Fred Jackson, Evans, and Mcgee and start over because it doesnt get any worse.
-And hopfully when they do all that, Jim Kelly the new owner.

  66. Bills4life says: Sep 21, 2010 4:37 AM

I was a Trent Edwards fan for way to long. He was recommended by The great Bill Walsh, he came in as a rookie and gave us hope for the future, he started the next season 4-0 then 5-1, hell he was evan my sons first football hero. But then they blow the 5-1 start, got worse the next year, and as it turnes out he peaked his rookie year in a game vs. dallas that they lost. But still I held on with the one excuse all edwards fans use the the most the o- line excuse. Until last week against the fins. There were times in the second half his line held up perfect and he just wouldn’t take a chance. He just stood there and looked around until they knocked his head off. He went from captian chech down to J.P. Loseman. I actually think I would take ole J.P. over any of these jokers right at least he could cock back and chuck bombs to evens, Parrish, and spiller.

  68. No1billsfan says: Sep 21, 2010 10:27 AM

Why in the world would Chan not start Brohm and see what can develop in an apparent tanker of a season? History already has shown that Fitz is a serviceable back-up and that Edwards is incapable. See what you have in Brohm, seeing that you kept him over the 7th round ’10 Draft pick you wasted. Here’s the answer: Ralph wants to win “just enough” games to be out of contention for the top 5 2011 Draft picks. This is a joke of a franchise and the only hope I have is that Jim Kelly & his group of investors snatch this team up ASAP and restore some assemblance of pride in the Bills from the top down.
