Jimmy Clausen is the Panthers' starter

After coming on in relief of Matt Moore in each of the first two games of the season, Jimmy Clausen is the Carolina Panthers’ starting quarterback.

Panthers coach John Fox said today that Clausen will start, Darin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer reports.

Clausen is entering the starting lineup more quickly than the Panthers expected him to when they selected him in the second round of this year’s draft, but Moore hasn’t played nearly as well as they expected him to when they anointed him as their starter this offseason.

In two games this season Moore has completed 20 of 49 passes for 307 yards, with two touchdowns and four interceptions. Clausen has completed seven of 15 passes for 59 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception.

Dumb move. Do they really think that Clausen is going to step in a be awesome. Should have given Moore more time (HA HA).
Clausen will not be Moore productive (HA HA)!

I would’ve thought they’d give Moore one more week before starting Clausen.

  3. FinFan68 says: Sep 20, 2010 12:54 PM

Clausen will do fine…next year. This year will be a learning experience.

  4. Smoke&Mirrors says: Sep 20, 2010 12:54 PM

Like it will make a difference.
The Carolina coaching staff has to be one of the worst in the league right now…especially at OC.
If it weren’t a lame duck salary cap year, the entire staff would have been fired in the offseason. The worst thing that could happen to the Carolina franchise is for the labor issues to continue to be unresolved. As long as it is, they will not make a move on their inept coaches and the franchise will continue to struggle to punch their way out of a wet paper bag.

  10. CKL says: Sep 20, 2010 1:06 PM

Until they solve the problem they have had since 2004 (No real #2 WR) it won’t matter. They’ve tried drafting them, they’ve tried the $$ FA, etc. They just can’t find one.

  11. Jack Burton says: Sep 20, 2010 1:08 PM

It won’t matter, he’ll struggle as bad or worse than Moore has.

I don’t think this move has much to do with winning this year. The Panthers obviously felt Clausen would be the future. When Matt Moore showed the Panthers aren’t making the playoffs with him behind center, why not miss the playoffs while your future QB gets valuable NFL experience rather than waste time on Moore. All Clausen is learning from watching Moore is what not to do. Let him learn for himself and it will pay off down the road.

Will it really matter with the current coaching staff not to mention Richardson has the team handcuffed not allowing them to get a wide receiver to help out 89. If the owner doesn’t care, why should the fans!. Thank God I am not a PSL owner.

  15. dlmcc0909 says: Sep 20, 2010 1:17 PM

Why isnt this worth a try? Moore has been horrible. People are too quick nowadays to think a guy who was playing the backup QB position is going to turn into the next Tom Brady or even Matt Schaub because of a couple decent games.
The list is too numerous to name all the backup QBs that people tried to talk themselves into as being great starters. Take a look at Kevin Kolb this year too. You cant win with Matt Moore, he sucks. Might as well go with Claussen and see what he has. Or at least get him some experience for next year. Matt Moore has no future as a starter in this league. The talent isnt there. Cut your losses early

  19. AlanSaysYo says: Sep 20, 2010 1:26 PM

Man, I wish I had a dollar for all of those offseason Carolina apologists who INSISTED that Matt Moore was not only competent, but the ENTRENCHED starting QB. That idea was one of the siller ones floated around this summer, and it only took two weeks to completely refute it.
Having said that, Carolina’s got many more problems than QB. John Fox may as well start looking for a house in Cleveland, because he’s toast.

  24. Hap says: Sep 20, 2010 1:34 PM

If they werent going to give Moore more time, they shoulda just sent him back to Dallas. It’s counter-productive for Moore and Claussen.

  25. realitypolice says: Sep 20, 2010 1:35 PM

I’m stunned by how often NFL coaches get fooled into thinking these mediocre, modestly talented, deeply flawed QBs are the answer as a starter simply because they strung together a few games, or at best one season, in which they didn’t suck.
Why would a coach risk mediocrity at the most important position on the team?
Seriously, Matt Moore? Derek Anderson? Jake Delhomme? Trent Edwards? Alex Smith? Jason Campbell? Brett Favre? (OK, that last one was a cheap shot)
Not injury replacements. Not suspension replacements. Not young guys or high draft picks getting extra chances. No- hand picked by their coaches to man the most important role on the team.
And you wonder why so many teams are loath to give personnel power to their coaches.

  26. gazretired says: Sep 20, 2010 1:35 PM

I think “smokeandmirrors” comment above nails it!! So Matt’s off to a tuff start–give him a break; uhm, didnt we use 2 have a guy named Jake that Mr. Fox never gave up on, and on, and on…..Our OC calls terrible plays, esp. late in the game! HE needs to b replaced. Why didn’t Stewart run N toS instead of trying to “sweep” on their 4th down TD try? Blame the O-line 4 that one i say. Anyway, i think Matt deserves at least one more try and if no good, try Armanti, Jon, and De in wildcat all day long. (ok y’all give me ur s…) Clausen will have plenty of games to mess up in the future. I’ve never seen Fox b so quickly decisive. out!!

The problem with Moore was not making the Giants or TB pay for stacking the box. Clausen is a FAR superior passer and much more accurate. He will make them Pay.

Jimmy Clausen is, by far, a better quarterback than Sam Bradford. The 2010 draft was really puzzling. Just look at Clausen’s numbers on a mediocre Notre Dame team last year:

Who is this Kravon idiot? I know you think you’re clever, but really dude….Anyway, the Panthers are not trying to win now, get the young guy some experience so he can win next year. Stop calling John Fox a lame duck, he knows what’s going on, and knows he couldn’t have gotten another job this year because of the labor issues, so he’s getting he’s paycheck until he go get one next year. I have been watching the Panthers and the Bengals for five years now, one is my home team and the other is my husband’s team, the Bengals fans need to think back to the last time they beat a quarterback getting his first start, cause, if I recall, it’s been a while. They seem to struggle with guys they have no tape on. Having said that, I hope the Bengals win, because the Panthers are obviously rebuilding this year, and the Bengals need the wins to keep up in the AFC. Also, the Panthers have one of the best O-lines in the NFL, they have been struggling thus far without Jeff Otah, but they will return to form when he returns to the lineup.

    Yephello,
I’m glad someone in your family is a Bengals fan.
While it is true that the Bengals have had some difficulty playing and losing against rookies like Big Ben and Joe Flacco. they’ve also had great success against (as they should) debuting rookies. Matthew Stafford in 09 and Eli Manning in 04.
But you really can’t talk about the past and predict the future when it comes to the NFL. The 2010 Bengals have a lot to prove and even if things go their way and they win the super bowl, the’ll have to prove it again and again for eternity. That’s why I hate Steeler fans, their team could be 0-16 and they’ll remind you of days gone by.
ok yea I’m jealous…. they have six rings.
But right now they’re 2-0 with a cup cake first 3 games.
