Bernard Berrian says he's getting too much of the blame

B. Berrian.jpgVikings wide receiver Bernard Berrian has turned in to the scapegoat for frustrated Vikings fans that need someone to blame for the team’s 0-2 start.

Asked if he’s received too much blame on Monday, Berrian said, “definitely,”  according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

We agree.  Vikings coach Brad Childress said he’s happy with the team’s offensive line, which is insane.  Berrian is a piece to the puzzle outside, but it’s not his fault Brett Favre is turning the ball over, that Percy Harvin doesn’t practice, or that the Vikings tackles can’t pass protect.

The offensive line essentially gave up seven points against Miami with Favre’s sack fumble.  They were handed seven points on Ricky Williams’ fumble.  The offense scored three on its own.

After Berrian said he was taking too much heat, he was asked if he was taking too much from inside the organization, as well as the outside.

“No. From position coaches, no,” Berrian said.

Yeah, it’s not his fault that the coaching staff expects a 4th string wide receiver to play like a #1.

  2. FinFan68 says: Sep 21, 2010 1:28 PM

He would take less blame if he would run his routes hard, get open and catch the ball.

Make no mistake: Bernard Berrian sucks. This is a guy who couldn’t even make the Bears’ roster as a receiver.
However, if Lord Favre is going to return to form – i.e. throwing the ball up for grabs 2 – 3 times a game – it won’t matter who’s lining up outside. It could be Jerry-friggin’-Rice, the Vikings are going to lose.

let ‘s see berrian picks a contract year to have a breakout season with the bears, during which all he did was run deep and catch bombs from rex grossman.he signs big deal with the vikings and is surprised that he is getting blame for not doing anything to earn those millions? that the bears did not over pay to resign this overhyped nobody is angelo’s best move since he took over the bears. his next catch over the middle will be his first. but he is right about one thing and that is he shouldn’t be the only one catching flak. what about lord favre?so how about those bears? what I did I tell you would happen if they got rid of turner and hired somebody who knew what they were doing on offense. suck on that viqueens!

“Not my fault! Not my fault!” The cheerleaders will be shouting it next.
Man, I love watching the wheels come off this pompous, overhyped, pathetic excuse of a team…

  11. green&bold says: Sep 21, 2010 2:00 PM

I find it laughable he’s being blamed. The only part of that team that deserves no blame is the defense. The entire offense should be shouldering 0-2. When Brett played with the packers I would imagine that he had about 6-8 picks per year that were tipped or bobbled by the WR so this is nothing new. Its what happens when you’re throwing to average guys.

  12. Hauschild says: Sep 21, 2010 2:04 PM

Of course Berrian holds a lot of the blame. He’s the #1 that is not consistently getting open. If gets open, or plays on game day like he plays during practice, interceptions become a moot point.

  13. Ruvell100 says: Sep 21, 2010 2:06 PM

As usual, the Vikings solution to overpaying for a whiny pussy of a wideout that no one else wanted is to trade for an overpaid, whiny pussy of a wideout that no one else wants.

  14. halestorm74 says: Sep 21, 2010 2:08 PM

The coverage Vincent Jackson gets should help him out.

  15. purpleguy says: Sep 21, 2010 2:11 PM

No doubt Berrian has been a disappointment last year and this year. He drops a catchable ball on a crucial 3rd down play in the Saints game, doesn’t get separation in either game, and doesn’t fight for or position himself for catches like rice did. Then again, the Vikes have to play to his strengths, with routes that allow him to get space, as opposed to jump balls into double coverage or back door passes when he’s running a fade route. He’s clearly not a #1 WR, but if he’s getting paid like one, he’d best start playing better.

  16. Old School says: Sep 21, 2010 2:15 PM

Maybe things would be clicking better for the Vikings if their pompous assed QB would have shown up for training camp.
Saints receivers talk about “extended” practices with Brees that didn’t end until Brees was satisfied with the results.
But that sounds like a “TEAM” working toward a common goal, whereas BrINT is in this for himself. He expects the rest of the players to be ready when he hauls his fat ass up nord from the swamp sometime in August or September. He doessn’t need practice.

  17. robert ethen says: Sep 21, 2010 2:19 PM

    Bernard “Blame” Berrian.

  18. Jheri C' says: Sep 21, 2010 2:21 PM

Put the blame where it is deserved. Favre doesnt have it. Maybe last year, but not this year. Chilly went all in thinking Favre would be his Ace in the hole, instead it’s the reason they will fall apart this year. Chilly your done.

  19. Philtration says: Sep 21, 2010 2:25 PM

And you have been getting too much of the money as well.
Thanks to the Vikings for taking this over paid, one-dimensional stiff off our hands.
You pay him like he is Jerry Rice while he plays like he is Rice-a-Roni.
Nothing special but slightly better than a stale hotdog bun.

  20. JoeSchmoe says: Sep 21, 2010 2:26 PM

Doesn’t help that Favre has made some atrocious decisions in these first 2 games. He’s forced a couple passes into him where he was double covered and vastly underthrew him on that go-route that wound up intercepted that would have otherwise been a long bomb TD. If Favre doesn’t underthrow that ball this conversation isn’t happening (and my fantasy team that has Berrian giving me squat isn’t 0-2, thanks in due part to this situation). He’d be seen as mildly productive if Favre could hit him, and on the routes he’s capable of running effectively (Vikings need to quit having him run sideline fades and 7 yard out routes).
I’m not even a Viking fan… just someone who’s pissed about Berrian’s production and has been forced to watch both games so far (in the Denver market). You’d think with Rice out this would be the time to shine, but Favre has his head up his ass or is running for his life, or the playcalling sucks… either way it’s UGLY!

  21. CincyAllDaWay says: Sep 21, 2010 2:33 PM

Perhaps if this cluster f@%k of an organization would have had the senior citizen currently under center, attend training camp like every other player in the league he would have had time to get in sync with his receivers! This is all brought on by the VIKES! You let that idiot Farve punk you all into thinking he’s something other than an interception machine, and then you pay him an insane amount of money to come in and play for you with no training camp practices and you expect anything other than what you’re getting right now???? Fing retards….everyone of you!! He looks like he’s 100 years old and the smart money says he retires before the end of the season!!

Bernard Berrian thinks Rex Grossman is TWICE the quarterback Bratt Failvre is.
@Maddog–just because your Biqueefs (or whoever) are tanking, don’t p1ss on our parade.
Given that at the start of the season, 99.98876564 percent of the football world thought:
-Martz + Cutler was a toxic combo
-Forte was a one year wonder
    -Olsen would be woefully neglected
-Urlacher was old and over the hill
    -Marinelli’s defense would suck
-Peppers was overpaid and took games off
-Our WR’s were inept and inexperienced
-our o-line would never hold up and protect Cutler
-the Bears would fall to last place in the division
I think we Bears fans are entitled to say a few “suck on that”‘s…
–and no slowing down, go on, go on–faster.
    That’s it.

Berrian’s fault he can only run Go-Routes.
OLines fault it can’t pass block.
Favre’s fault he tries to make a reciever something he is not.
Chilly’s fault that Berrian and Favre are on the team.
Zigy’s fault Chilly is a head coach.
NFL’s fault that someone with no football knowledge can own a team.
Tebow’s fault he couldn’t of saved us all from this 0-2 start.

  25. pkrlvr says: Sep 21, 2010 2:40 PM

Berrian’s been terrible this year. Brett has no confidence in him.
Childress is an idiot if he’s happy with that O line. Favre has had NO time. It’s his final year, they need to get some goddamn help for him!

  26. Coach says: Sep 21, 2010 2:46 PM

The whole Viking organization has become a joke and Childress is a big part of it. Having a QB that shows up the last day of training camp certainly didn’t help. A QB that was actually at camp would have worked on his timing with Berrian since they knew Rice was out and Harvin was missing a lot of time. But lets be serious this is Bret’s team and the rest of the idiots, including Chilly, allow him to play that game at the expense of wins. If I was AP I would demand a trade. He is the only one that is a current Superstar, yet they treat him like he is an afterthought. Without AP, the Vikes would be lucky to win 4 games this year, with or without Favre.

when he first signed with the vikes he was slated to be the #1 receiver, but he hasn’t lived up to the expectations yet,
Greg Camarillo should get the start over him

  29. Mattchew182 says: Sep 21, 2010 2:55 PM

All Berrian has ever been was a deep threat. Why the Vikes don’t use him to throw bombs out of play action is beyond me. He isn’t a starting NFL WR he is a gimmick #3 deep speed guy at best. You’d better have a possesion receiver across from him or your f’ed. Either way Favre has destroyed the chemistry of this team with his holier than thou act not going to camp or OTA’s. And how do they reward him by paying him more money. Now Peterson and Rice are playing hookie when it comes to the offseason programs. As a Bears fan I am loving watching the wheels come off this train wreck of a team. It will be interesting if they trade for V Jack on a 1 year deal that would mean him or Rice would be franchised and the other would be scooped up by Da Bears. The Queen’s better wise up and tell lord Favre to F#$K off next season. Actually draft a QB that is worth something and start over. I hear Kevin Kolb might be available.

    2) Shit in the other hand and see which ones fills up first!

The problem is very simple: the loudmouth Vikings fans who’ve crowned themselves champs last year and this year because they have an over-rated career choke artist at QB simply can’t admit they were wrong. They can’t admit they were wrong for arguing in Favre’s favor when realistic and rational people said there was no way possible he’d repeat last year’s performance. So now they’ve deflected blame to Berrian….even though Favre has thrown some of the worst passes in NFL history the last 2 weeks. Want to know why the Vikes are 0-2? It’s because #4 is throwing very bad balls and making very bad decisions.

  45. goombar2 says: Sep 21, 2010 4:25 PM

It’s too easy and not very classy.
The vikings are pathetic and the lies the organizations sells it’s fans boarder on fraud. It’s like the organization thinks it’s Vincent Jackson away from the Lombardi trophy.
From what I’ve seen there are so many other problems. No O-line, Favre’s hit the wall, Pat Williams can be moved, Kevin Williams is playing when he wants to, Jared Allen is slowing down, No Cb depth, Lbers can be had since the Wall is crumbling, Ray Edwards is showing no pride.
And these guys think VJ, who hasn’t done a camp, doesn’t know the playbook, didn’t come from a WC offensive team, and isn’t in football shape – is the onre thing standing in the way of the PLAYOFFS? PLAYOFFS?!!?

Interesting post. I agree completely that all is not lost for the Vikings. This post could have been made about the Packers O-Line and play calling last year as well. The Pack did get better by getting healthy and resigning Tauscher.
It’s been 2 games people. I for one, will not believe the Vikings are done until Adrian Peterson goes down. Without him, their toast. Vincent Jackson cannot help this team immediately. He missed OTA’s, training camp, all of the preseason and the start of the regular season. As a Packer fan, I pray the Vikings trade for Jackson. Mortgage your future and piss off arguably the best running back in the league.

Farve didn’t miss blocks & not turn to the inside on passes or run out of the endzone completely instead of coming back to the ball. AP also missed a wide open alley on 3 & 1 that would have won the game. Instead he cut back & got stopped. This is his team mates having issues not Farve. Berrian’s right. He’s not to blame. Watch those plays back and you can see they were all just terrible throws. Favre could get away with throwing into double coverage with Rice, because he’d make a play. Berrian is not Sidney Rice. He’s a #3 receiver at best.

Wake up Barrian!!! This guy is by far the biggest waste of time and money, He muffed two punts, drops everything thrown his way, and he can’t take responsibility for his lack of play… The only person I blame is Rick Spielman for overpaying this piece of garbage.. Get him off the field, regardless of how much you have to pay him to sit on the bench..
Poor Brett has to deal with a half ass line, pathetic receivers, and he openly takes all the blame for his teams lack of performance.. They talked him into coming back, then Sidney announces he wont play, and his team mates play like shit… Pathetic and its embarrassing to be a Vikings fan right now!!!!

This guy hasn’t done anything since being in Minnesota. He should get a lot of pressure being paid millions and not showing anything on the field. No matter who the quarterback is or was he has never lived up to what he’s getting paid. All you have to do is watch him in a game any it’s obvious.

Just relax, let the adjustments be made, and prepare yourself to lose some more peace of mind as the Vikings get significantly better as the season wears on.

That assumes you have a coach who knows how to make adjustments. Sorry, but you don’t. Childress can’t adjust Favre’s jock, much less a gameplan. The Vikings are going to struggle this year, plain and simple. Jackson is not going to be able to help given his total lack of work (much less work in the system), and by the time Rice comes back it may be too late.
