Eagles give the ball to Vick

In a stunning move, the Eagles have announced that Mike Vick is the team’s starting quarterback.

Specifically, the Eagles disclosed the information via the following text message:  “Andy Reid names Michael Vick as team’s starting quarterback.  Reid will be available on conference call with media at 6:30. . . .  Reid will also be available for cameras following the conference call at the NovaCare complex.”

The tone and content of that communication strongly suggests that this isn’t merely a situation in which Kevin Kolb is still recovering from the concussion he suffered nine days ago.  Indeed, Jay Glazer of FOX reported over the weekend that Kolb was cleared to play on Saturday; absent another blow to the head since then, Kolb should be fine.

It appears instead that Vick is taking over, and that Kolb will be a highly compensated backup.

The next question becomes whether the Eagles will try to take advantage of the uncapped year to sign Vick to a long-term deal.

Stay tuned.

Your getting ahead of yourself, Florio. It sounds more like Kolb just isn’t ready. I doubt Reid does a 180 after saying Kolb would be the starter when healthy.

  18. downwithdansnyder says: Sep 21, 2010 6:04 PM

The Eagles sure don’t have much luck with back-ups becoming quality starters do they? Is that other guy they traded for a #2 (I think) still even in the league? They STOLE that pick. I wonder who they chose with that pick.

  19. contract says: Sep 21, 2010 6:04 PM

I guess Reid isn’t as dumb as he looks after all.

  20. tx_tuff says: Sep 21, 2010 6:04 PM

Vick will have a bad game sometime this year, then Andy Reid can have a conference on why Kolb is the starter again.

  21. DadGummit says: Sep 21, 2010 6:05 PM

Wish nothing but the best for Vick. Unfortunately, once teams start game planning for him specifically, I see problems ahead for the guy.

Oh Truck! Any chance the Jaguars had of winning just got rushed down their throats

  23. Gitlin says: Sep 21, 2010 6:06 PM

This makes me believe me that in the past Andy may have been willing to switch quarterbacks when McNabb was playing poorly, but Reid has always had to be so careful with prima donna McNabb. Don’t hurt his feelings by taking him out. You could see a difference in the first half of week one with how many plays Vick received. McNabb would have never allowed Vick that many plays. This is finally Andy Reid’s offense with McNabb gone.

  24. NFreakinL says: Sep 21, 2010 6:06 PM

What the What!? The Kevin Kolb experiment WAS a smoke screen to get McNabb out of town so Vick could start!?

  25. nickv360 says: Sep 21, 2010 6:06 PM

I dropped Vick to keep Kolb as my backup yesterday. FML.

  26. Barius Maximus says: Sep 21, 2010 6:07 PM

OK I’m picking up Vick and dropping Farve from one of my fantasy teams.

  27. Jack Acid says: Sep 21, 2010 6:08 PM

If not injury-related, this HAS to be driven by players behind closed doors. No other reason Reid switches gears so fast, unless the tape from Sunday was too much to ignore.
Vick gives them an edge at the moment, but as soon as he is game-planned for and not facing the likes of Detroit…might not look so rosy.

  28. Gitlin says: Sep 21, 2010 6:08 PM

Hey CremeBrunell, every game has been sold out for years. How will they sell mre tickets? You can’t even get standing room only tickets in Philly.

  30. clark796 says: Sep 21, 2010 6:08 PM

  32. LAEaglefan says: Sep 21, 2010 6:13 PM

Either Reid is convinced that Vick is THAT good or he’s convinced that Kolb is THAT bad. Or perhaps his thinking is that Vick may be better able to survive the Eagles’ horrendous offensive line. Where’s Jon Runyan and Tra Thomas when we need them?

  33. Shofner85 says: Sep 21, 2010 6:13 PM

Uh, guys … he beat the Lions … by 3 points.
That bears repeating … the Lions … by 3 ponts.

  34. 5to47TDTDTD says: Sep 21, 2010 6:13 PM

hahahaha trade mcnabb to a division rival and he is throws for almost 500yards then bench the person that was the new era in philly lmao vick lmao thr fagles will finish 5-11 bookit!!

  35. Mooch says: Sep 21, 2010 6:14 PM

If you know Andy Reid, you know this is a complete and utter shocker!
This is like Mike Martz installing the wishbone!
And I have to ask – if the mentality was “let’s win one in 2010″…why didn’t we just keep McNabb and make another run? Because he would have taken us farther than Vick.
If the name of the game is go 9-7 and go one and done in the playoffs, McNabb could’ve done that easily.
This is an amazing turn of events. They must have made the assessment that Kolb can’t play. They groom him for 3 years, trade the face of their franchise in division to make space for him…and give up on the whole thing in less than 30 minutes of football.
    Wow.
I will say that Vick SIGNIFICANTLY helps my fantasy team with Lesean McCoy. But can we beat the Saints or Colts? Nope.

  36. Neverend says: Sep 21, 2010 6:14 PM

Vick can’t be trusted as a starter. He’s too inconsistent. Given the Eagles offensive line problems, however, this may be the correct route to go.
Any chance ESPN stops kissing his bottom?

  37. Brian oSACKpo says: Sep 21, 2010 6:15 PM

100 passing yards and 35 rushing yards from your qb doesn’t cut it in the NFC East

  38. jazapico says: Sep 21, 2010 6:16 PM

Bad decision Mr. Reid. Sooner or later Vick will fail and Kolb will be already cero motivated to take the control again… Sucks!

  39. CremeBrunell says: Sep 21, 2010 6:16 PM

Oh got a new statistic. Klob became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw more than 300 yards in his first two games and get benched after his 3rd.

  40. Great Falconi says: Sep 21, 2010 6:17 PM

“This is finally Andy Reid’s offense with McNabb gone.”
So, let’s get this straight, Gitlin…
You’re telling the whole world that it has taken Andy Reid eleven seasons to find a QB that can run “his” offense?
That is a monumentally incompetent opinion.

  41. Pale face says: Sep 21, 2010 6:17 PM

“What the What!? The Kevin Kolb experiment WAS a smoke screen to get McNabb out of town so Vick could start!?”
Not willing to go with the 2nd part of your statement, but I think you may be right on the 1st part.
This town almost burned down the Linc after Dawkins was let go, maybe they saw that and realized they needed a cover story to get McNabb out.
And central to any Joe Banner spin job is to try to make the fan base hate the guy they wanted out. So maybe the trade to the Skins was crazy like a fox! Because we all hate the Skins!

Yes and no. Teams can game plan for him, but it looks like his time in Philly has actually taught him to be a passer first. I watched a number of scrambles in which he finally learned to keep his head up and look for receivers instead of simply running. That’s a good thing. Another factor might just be the running game. When teams have to gameplan for a scrambling QB, it tends to open things up for the running game. Think VY and CJ in Tennessee. Sure, it didn’t work against the Steelers, but neither did the Falcons offense which just scored like crazy this week. So, they could be hoping Vick under center improves their running game. Then there’s the O-line issues. Until they’re solidified, it would make things pretty tough on Kolb. Vick can at least by some time to make a play. I’d like to see Kolb get a real shot, but putting him out there with a high chance of failure isn’t really doing him any favors.

The Eagles went into freefall the moment they traded McNabb to a division rival. This news just confirms it. You are all going to love the rebuilding process the new coach starts once Reid is shitcanned this season. On the bright side, maybe the Eagles will convince Cowher to unretire and pick up the pieces.

This does nothing for the Eagles long-term.
It might get them a few more wins this season but for what? For who? They aren’t winning a championship this year … AGAIN.
They were supposed to be rebuilding and giving Kolb live in-game reps this year.
Now that they beat the Loins by 3 they think they’re a contender again?
Andy Reid is a complete and utter moron.

  61. KW93 says: Sep 21, 2010 6:51 PM

  64. Dewey Axewoond says: Sep 21, 2010 6:55 PM

A few words on Vick as a starter:
    Liar.
    Cheater.
    Scumbag.
    Dog mutilator.
    Ran a gambling ring.
    Ran a drug ring.
    Infested with herpes.
Killed the same creatures that love us, serve us, bring us comfort, protect us, and sometimes save our lives. For many of us, they are like family members, best friends to our kids, etc.
Reminder: He mutilated, electrocuted, drowned, and crushed their poor little doggy skulls in with concrete blocks, then laughed about it.
And now we say to our kids:
“It’s okay, son–he will help the team WIN!! And sell JERSEYS! Look how fast he can run! We love you Mike Vick!”
What shameless, forgetful wh0res some of you people are (peegulls fans).
What kind of people root for Vick? Probably the same sort of ignorant, myopic sheep that gullibly voted for Owebama, yet can’t even tell you what branch of government he’ll be using to destroy our country with.
I can’t wait until this over-rated one-trick pony breaks your hearts and sends the Peegulls crashing down into the philthy gutter where they belong.

  65. dawk says: Sep 21, 2010 6:56 PM

First of all, I could care LESS about some wannabe’s fantasy league! This has been my NFL team for about 50 years, and now I find that I have to root against them the rest of the year and until Reid leaves. AR makes me sick to my stomach. I was prepared to watch through a learning, perhaps losing season, in hopes of building something for the future. Now what we have is a 30-year-old QB who, based on 6-year stats, everyone over-estimates, and a promising young QB who the “brain trust” in Philly gave a whole HALF of one game to mature and become a seasoned starter. Thank goodness, and this hurts for a Philly fan to say, that Dallas didn’t sit Aikman when he went 0-11 his first year. Reid, you blew it, bubba! Now get the H… out of town. Reid SUCKS! Lurie SUCKS! Color me a previous fan/supporter who is now a hater and who, if past history is any barometer, will have the last laugh as this team and its future fall flat on their asses!

  66. dafish says: Sep 21, 2010 6:58 PM

I have to think this move came from a higher power than Reid. Perhaps Banner or Lurie.

  67. rcunningham says: Sep 21, 2010 7:02 PM

    You start the better quarterback.
This isn’t rocket science you idiots.

  68. redbeardxxv says: Sep 21, 2010 7:10 PM

Are you people blind? Vick was McKnobb’s replacement from the day he signed with the team. Had Philthy named him the starter that day, PETA would have shit a brick. Solution? Call Kolb the future, set him up to fail, or better yet, get hurt, and let Vick loose ASAP. It was all a sham, a ruse, a smokescreen. This is the best PR move the Eagles could have dreamed up. Vick is no longer a dog killer, now he’s the comeback kid, who has overcome so many obstacles to find himself leading an NFL franchise once again. Never mind that he built the obstacles himself, ignore the gambling, dogfighting, lying to Goodell, or shootings outside nightclubs, just look what he can do with a football!
Don’t give me this He paid his debt crap either. Apparently so has Donte Stallworth, Ray Lewis, and several others. Hey, at least they got Plaxico- he was extremely dangerous, (to his own thighs) glad to see he will serve his full sentence! Finally, justice prevails. After all, shooting yourself in the leg warrants 2 1/2 years in the pokey. Drunken manslaughter? 30 days at most…

  69. KingJoe! says: Sep 21, 2010 7:11 PM

This move was based on the fact that the Eagles are going to move Kolb to the Cards. They are locking Vick up now on a long term deal and they will end up getting the Cards #1 in next years draft. Of course this is just a mere guess.

  70. greenie says: Sep 21, 2010 7:16 PM

The only good thing about Vick starting is that it is the only chance of him getting injured. I wish you ill will Vick. He belongs in prison or h-e-l-l, and he WILL get to one of them sooner or later. He is garbage. C’mon defense, take that garbage OUT!!!

  71. allinSTACKme says: Sep 21, 2010 7:17 PM

  75. Caldon says: Sep 21, 2010 7:27 PM

I really don’t get it. You draft a guy to replace McNabb, train him and then trade your starting QB to a division rival, saying his is your guy. He gets to play exactly 1/2 a game, gets a concussion and then you replace him with the backup, making him the perm starter based on 1 1/2 games of only “ok” play.
You upset the fans of McNabb and those against the inter-division trade. You break trust in the locker room by breaking the “you won’t lose your starting job to injury” rule. You backstab and break the trust with your “QB of the future”, all to put Vick in, who also can’t trust that you won’t yank him the second he has a bad game.
Wow, this looks more like a desperate coach who expects to be fired any game then the coach we are used to seeing in Philly.

  76. hank moody says: Sep 21, 2010 7:28 PM

Think about Vick training his dogs by taking smaller dogs, taping their mouths shut so they cannot fight back, and throwing them in the ring. Think about Vick killing his dogs that did not perform by hanging, drowning, and electrocuting them.

  79. Peester15 says: Sep 21, 2010 7:40 PM

  82. FMWarner says: Sep 21, 2010 7:59 PM

Aside from heavy drugs, I can’t understand this move. I thought Reid was smarter than that. I never thought he’d sacrifice the future and blow up his plan so he can go 9-7 right now. Maybe 11 years of having a town full of morons in your ear breaks a man.
I hope the explanation is that he’s letting Vick play until he turns back into the real Michael Vick. It’s the only way to put the controversy to rest. Putting Kolb back in now would never quiet the rabble, because the last image they saw of Vick was of a win.

  83. tclaus says: Sep 21, 2010 7:59 PM

In my opinion, it was McNabb and his skills as a QB thats’s, the real reason behind all of our semi fulfilled glory years as the eagles leader on the field, we had a great run with McNabb Trading him was retarded on Andy Reids part. If it were not for McNabb Andy Reid would have been long gone as the Eagles coach. Because clearly as we all have witnessed when winning the game is on the line coach Reid has never let us down with a bone headed play call on 4th and one to cost us a game .Or playoff game or and a potential Superbowl appearance.Clearly Kolb sucks as a leader he has no ability to scramble like McNabb did. And cant take a hit. And Mike Vick is the greatest QB of all time at making a play out of no where with his great speed and legs! I always thought the idea is to win the game by playing your most talented players on the team. And Mike Vick is light yrs better than Kolb! What a disgrace this whole QB controversy has been, when its clear to most Eagles fans that Mike Vick is the superior QB.3 pro bowls, playoff wins. Andy Reid is becomming even more arrogant and cocky with his rediculous statements that Kolb is the starter i wonder what planet reid is on? because nobody in Phila or the rest of the football world can find logic in his reasoning!Hey Andy you playyyyyyy to winnnn the gameeeeeeeee! So dont try to feed us crap like loyalty to Kolb. Thats a bunch of bull s##t . You have no loyalty, if you did McNabb comming off a probowl yr performance would still be a Eagle.Thank God someone in the upper office has pulled Reid on the side to wisper in his wax filled ears to listen to Vicks stats thus far as our starter QB.Get some Glasses dudeeeeeeeeee!!!you must be getting blind or something. Reid may be a dumb coach, but Jeffery Laurey the owner isnt stupid. he knows what the fans want and deserve here in Phila, and thats the best QB we have to lead the Eagles, and his name is Mike Vick !!!

easy buddha. He most definitely didn’t “rack up 600 yards.” Had the Lions defense been able to catch a cold, they would’ve had 3 interceptions……..which makes me wonder, if those passes had been intercepted and, thus, those drives not resulted in points and the Eagles lose……would we have gotten this decision?
On another note: Winston Justice will be guarding his blindside?!? Just saying…
Mooch: I’m with you. I feel like I need to go to confession, that the rapture is upon us. 10 passes vs. a decent game vs. the Lions and you say, “yeah, time for a change…”

    Thank the football gods
Coach Reid has finally come to his senses by naming M. Vick his starting QB for game 3. Being an Eagles fan since R. Gabriel I have earned the right to cheer, bleed and suffer for this team.
Cannot figure out what he was thinking, trading the heart and soul of the defense, and the most successful QB in Eagle history and inserting K. Kolb. Don’t get me wrong Kolb is sthe heir apparent but I don’t think it was his time. True he had a couple of good passing games last year, but his performance was pathetic against N.O.
I understand the business side signing him to a $12 M contract, lock up your future but remember how you got there.
I wish my team all the luck and good fortune for the season. When they face Washington the McNabb trade may loom as an albatros and one of the organizations biggest blunders in quite some time.

To you guys saying you are going to pick up Vick in your fantasy league, you are in a lousy league if he wasn’t already picked up against the Lions last week.

  90. Shofner85 says: Sep 21, 2010 8:42 PM

Lots of risk here for Reid.
If Vick stinks it up, starts throwing the INT’s and looking confused against a good team or two, and now he’s got Kolb back in there, confidence shattered and never trusting his coach again.
This is all about PHI needing to find out what Vick had as a true game QB, sooner than later, since they only have him locked up for the rest of this year.

It just dawned on me–the psychology behind this move:
Andy Reid is driven bu much deeper, far more personal motives in making this decision:
“I couldn’t/can’t save my own sons, but maybe I can be like Tony “Sanctimony” Dungy and help this young man turn HIS life around…”
    Classic displacement, that’s all.

This is the same sentiment that ushered Mcnabb out of town isn’t it? Lots of yards and a loss against the Saints/Packers and come back and beat the Lions/Cheifs. Funny how everything changes in regard to Kolb. How can you have so much hate for another HUMAN BEING?

Vick deserves it, he’s been playing very very well, and when it comes to PETA, f*ck PETA. they already got it in with Vick plenty. if they want to come after him now that hes actually getting his career back on track, that just proves that those completely over the top liberals are really just spiteful @$$holes. he did his time (which was COMPLETELY TOO MUCH in the first place) and SHOULD be a starting QB once again. Reid probably realized that the only way to avoid a QB controversy in Philly was to start Vick, cause at this point the only controversy would be in the fact that Philly’s best QB is riding the bench.

Sorry but PETA could care less about what happens on the football field. He continues to work with peta in educating inner city youth to why dog fighting is wrong. So all of you people that hate because it feels good please go somewhere else to spill your venom..
    ——————————————-
Really, because here in Vick’s hometown in Virginia, Vick has done nothing and dog fighting is still going strong. PETA’s main HQ is across the water in Norfolk, and he isn’t well received by them at all. To buy into the hype. He’s a dirt bag, and it’s sad so many kids in the area look up to him. The NFL should be ashamed of themselves. Looks like there will be a big party in thug town. Better get out the flack jackets this Sunday, all the idiots will be shooting their gun up in the air if wins, and if he doesn’t, they’ll be shooting them at each other.

  96. nrg1006 says: Sep 21, 2010 11:25 PM

It’s all about our damaged offensive line and the running game. Kolb wouldn’t have a chance with the Jags and this vastly improves our game plan. It’s all about winning and not whinning, right? This would be a massacre with Kolb and a gritty chance with Vick & McCoy. Don’t the Jags employ a 4-3 defense?? Run, baby, run!

    @Ridge_runner
Vick and the eagles offense put up 35 points on the lions, its the defense’s fault that the game was that close so stop blaming it on him. Jahvid best tore them apart.

  99. PackerFanforDecades says: Sep 22, 2010 12:34 AM

Defensing quarterbacks with the speed + courage to run is a tall order. I learned that the painful way watching Fran run circles around the Packers for what seemed like an eternity in the 70′s. We had y-e-a-r-s to plan contain schemes but we never could contain him or catch him.
Given the still-painful Tarkenton experience, Vick had me worried from the moment he emerged in Atlanta. Luckily, the Falcons and the Pack didn’t play each other much while Vick was there.
I think Aaron Roger’s running ability makes the Packers into a stronger team. He ran one in for a touchdown from 11 yards out last Sunday.
If Brett had had the courage (and ankle health) to put his head down and run it in the New Orleans championship game instead of throw it across his body for the pick, he could have gained more than enough to get back into field goal range. Seems like he had 8 – 9 yards of grass in front of him when he let the pass fly just before the line of scrimmage.
So … if he keeps throwing the ball well, Vick is a better short-term chalkboard choice for QB than Kolb ….
    BUT
…. in my personal opinion, chalkboard logic can’t run all the decisions on an NFL franchise. Yes, it’s true Vick spent his time behind bars; he’s “paid his debt to society.” But, in my personal opinion, the jail time can’t erase the image of cruelty to dogs.
Coach Reid: why would you want to make Eagle fans that love their dogs feel rotten? Is winning more important? Have you ever had a dog for a pal? Shucks.
The strategic mistake was made back when Vick was signed last year. It should have never got down to a chalkboard decision in September ’10.

Color me a previous fan/supporter who is now a hater and who, if past history is any barometer, will have the last laugh as this team and its future fall flat on their asses!
smart man!! You can always root for Mcnabb and a team that has won a superbowl before! HTTR!!

The othe funny thing is that people wish death on Vick, good karma A, and B they do it while eating a chicken sandwich and wearing a leather belt makin tuna for their kids. F#CK CHICKEN, COWS AND TUNA FISH THEY TASTE GREAT. These murderous, dangerous pitbulls dont taste good and need to be protected.

Just wanted to ask a few things.
1st: Kevin Kolb is a big time hunter, his favorite way to kill innocent animals is with a cross bow.
How is this so very different than dog fighting?
If your answer is “hunting is legal” lets ask the animals if it makes a difference legal or not.
2nd: what does voting for Obama have to do with football?

  110. SDW2001 says: Sep 22, 2010 3:50 PM

I haven’t heard whether Vick killed them personally or not. I’ve never gotten an answer on that.
As an Eagles fan and animal lover, here is what I think: Vick did a terrible thing and paid the price. He will still need to continue atoning and changing his life. But for now, that ship has sailed. We have him…that is not changing. So his past really cannot play into it at this point. It’s irrelevant to a football discussion.
And that discussion is who to use. Until Monday or so, I was still on the side of Kolb. Why? Because he was named the starter, prepped as the starter, etc. He had one bad half of football and an injury, most of which wasn’t his fault. However, I started to come around on Monday. Most of my thinking relates to the offensive line. The offense also just looked flat under Kolb, even though it was only a half of football. The difference in the TEAM when Vick took over was really something. Even the defense played better.
So, I’m on board with this. I think Reid made the right call, though I also think Kolb went nuts when Reid told him (listen to his answers on Kolb’s reaction).
