Jets won't deactivate Braylon Edwards

After talking tough all day, the Jets won’t end up doing much about Braylon Edwards’ DWI arrest.

Jets G.M. Mike Tannenbaum said in a conversation with the Associated Press that Edwards would be active for Sunday night’s game against the Dolphins, although he wouldn’t start.  It will be up to Rex Ryan when and if Edwards plays.

If Edwards is active, the Jets are highly likely to use him.  It defies logic that they’d possibly waste a 45-man roster spot on a player they were planning to keep on the bench.

Greg Aiello of the NFL points out that the CBA does not allow teams to suspend or deactivate players for DUI arrests per CBA rules.  Florio notes, however, that Edwards would have been unlikely to fight a deactivation through arbitration with his free agent stock for 2011 already in trouble.

Either way, the Jets have a game they desperately want to win in Miami on Sunday night.  Edwards can help them win, so we expect to see him on the field.

Of course they won’t stand up and make a statement to any of their players.
They only stand up and make statements to the press.
    What a classless organization.
DUI’s aren’t all that bad, right NY Jets?

  2. JaggedMark says: Sep 21, 2010 8:25 PM

So in other words, if the Jets get off to a good start in the game, and have no problems, Ryan will make a bold statement by keeping Edwards out.
Ah, but if they fall behind, hell with that idiot’s issue, bring him on the field.
    So classless.

  3. Papoose059 says: Sep 21, 2010 8:26 PM

Is this even a surprise? They are intimidated by the Dolphins, getting swept last year resonates with them big time.

If you didn’t see this coming the day Edwards moved to the Big Apple.
If you actually thought management would punish him.
If you don’t think Ryan’s coaching style contributes to this type of behavoir.

If Greg Aiello of the NFL has pointed out that under the collective bargaining agreement teams are not allowed to suspend or deactivate players for DUI arrests, why in the world would anyone be upset that the Jets aren’t going to suspend or deactivate Braylon Edwards for his DUI arrest?
    Am I missing something?

    ATLANTA (AP)
Miami Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown, who had been in the suburban Atlanta area to help celebrate his parents’ anniversary, was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol and released from jail a few hours later, officials said Monday.
Did he sit out any games??

  21. FinFan68 says: Sep 21, 2010 8:46 PM

They are doing the most they can do. They are not allowed to deactivate him…they can sit him on the bench and I expect they would do that for the first series to send a belated message. I would sit the other two turds for a series as well, but it would be hard to do that for an o-lineman and not get burned. The Jets need to find some discipline quick

for a guy who was out drinking with his teammate the night said teammate ended up killing a guy (partly) due to driving impaired, you’d think he’d learn.
this is the issue i have with him, it’s not the first time and by not intervening now, it won’t be the last. until he kills someone. then he’ll get 30 days in jail. maybe. or a fine. maybe. and the jets will say, “we’re disappointed”…”now go out there and play football you little rascal” cause to hell with integrity.

The only reason it’s reported is because he a pro athlete. Fine him a game check and move on. He cost himself a lot of money in free agency. That’s punishment enough, plus the legal system will punish him as well.

    2) Braylon Edwards, at 2 AM, beats up a scrawny guy outside a Cleveland night club.
    3) At 5:15 AM, Braylon Edwards blows twice the legal limit in Manhattan.
With the pattern of his “essence” now clear, the commish is going to lay it on Mr. Edwards. If the Jets won’t sit him the league soon enough will. Braylon and Santonio may be like ships passing in the night.

The NFL ought to suspend every one of the dirtbags who get a DUI/DWI…even first offenses. (That includes Ronnie Brown) There should be no exceptions if the BAC comes back over the limit…not even when the buy a plea deal. Minimum should be 1st time 2 games, 2nd time 8 games, 3rd time lifetime ban from playing in the league. Adjust the suspension based on prior history of being in trouble. These guys feel like they are above the law and that there are no consequences. They need to understaqnd that they place the lives of innocent people in jeopardy just because they need to keep up sonme demented kind of “cool” image that could be damaged by getting a ride. Hire a freaking Limo or call a cab…or use the tools provided by the teams.

Right. Like he wouldn’t risk something like a DUI in a contract year. Or like the NFLPA would just allow the rules to be violated without contesting it. Like a CBA can just be so obviously and publicly violated without contention.

Wow are all you guys really that stupid? Let me spell it out nice and clear for your. THE JETS WERE NOT ALLOWED TO PUNISH HIM. THEY WERE NOT ALLOWED TO SUSPEND HIM. THEY WERE NOT EVEN ALLOWED TO DEACTIVATE HIM. They did everything they could, but it falls under the substance abuse category which results in a fine, and not personal conduct, where teams are allowed to intervene. There is nothing the Jets could have done, because of how the CBA is constructed. They can’t afford to activate him every week and not have him play. That would be insane. Its despicable what he did, but the Jets handled it as well as they possibly could. And I love how a Jet gets a DUI and its all over the news, and like 10 other guys from different teams get DUI’s and its not a story anymore like 5 minutes later. Quit hating just cause your team sucks. Btw its hilarious how Dolphin fans are so “horrified” when Ronnie Brown got a DUI earlier this year. Can’t wait to see us mop the floor with Chad Henne. No more Ginn on returns to steal the game for you losers!

@asdfghjkl – The answer to your question is because Ben Roethlisberger is white. GODell made a point to punish the first high-profile white player to remotely get in trouble (even if not charged because there was no evidence). Since then, look at the results … Vick’s party and an assault (A-ok); Brown’s loaded weapon on a plane (fine = less than a game check!) and nothing will happen to Edwards. It’s reverse discrimination.

Whatever is going on, the system is inconsistent, unfair, and bogus. I want some action by the NFL against this guy. I don’t care what rule is in place that claims to protect him from punishment. I have nothing against the Jets. But, after what Steelers fans have gone thru with Roethlisberger, the media attention, and the NFL, it’s only fair to have a penalty system that is just and fair.
I don’t condone Roethisberger’s behavior, whatever might have happened with those women. He is a jerk. But, you have to go on the facts in front of you. Ben has never been arrested. Never broken any kind of probation. Never been ticketed for anything in his life (that I know of). And, has always acted professionally, at least, on the field. In other words, he’s not an @$$ towards other players and doesn’t taunt and showboat like some other immature players. It’s alll business and a determination to win.

I found this in an article and thought it was interesting. Apparently Edwards won’t be suspended any time soon (unless he is charged with a felony or pleads guilty):
Adam “Pacman” Jones: Seven incidents and a felony before suspension.
Mike Vick: Two felonies. Suspended after pleading guilty.
Donte Stallworth: Two felonies (including manslaughter). Suspended after pleading guilty.
Plaxico Burress: Two felonies. Suspended four games and then cut by the New York Giants, still has not been suspended by the NFL.
Ben Roethlisberger: No arrests, no criminal charges, and no guilty verdict and suspended 4 games (yeah, yeah, I had to include that…)
The truth is, every team had players that break the law. With only 16 games to play, teams want to win and will do whatever it takes to win. I’m sure other teams have suspended players (the Steelers sat out Burress and Holmes) but apparently the Jets aren’t one of them.
