Tomlin: Charlie Batch will start

Byron Leftwich returned from his sprained MCL on Wednesday to a full practice, but he won’t return to the top of the Steelers depth chart.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin announced that Charlie Batch will get the call on Sunday against a revived Bucs defense.  It’s a somewhat surprising choice if Leftwich is truly healthy.

Playing in relief of Dennis Dixon, Batch dropped back to pass 13 times.  Those plays gained a total of 19 yards.  You just don’t see that in the NFL too often.

Tomlin can only hope he doesn’t see it again.

I agree with the decision. Batch may not have been great last week. But, he is a pretty consistent back-up QB through the years that more than likely won’t make big mistakes in a game. Leftwich is not that special, either. Hasn’t done much for the Steelers this year. And, was awful with the Bucs last year as a starter.
Steelers will need another great defensive performace to win this game against the Bucs.

Funny these guy’s are still finding a way to win with MAJOR QB issues.. Any other team in the league would be 0-2 right now.

  4. Didier says: Sep 22, 2010 4:19 PM

I think Coach Tomblin was uncomfortable going with Leftwich coming off a knee injury.
Start Batch and if he can’t move the team, put Leftwich in.
On the other hand, start Leftwich and if he tweaks the knee, and you’re down to Batch with essentially no backup.
Coach Tomlin is a smart guy — this is a good, conservative move.
By the way, I think Batch will have trouble moving the team and Leftwich will end up finishing the game.

  5. Citizen Strange says: Sep 22, 2010 4:21 PM

If Batch is 100% healthy he has to get the start. An extra week or two of healing can only help Leftwich.
I like Batch a lot and hope he can stay healthy for these next two games. He’s got the leadership, smarts and arm to get the job done.
    GO STEELERS!

Also, in Los Angeles CBS is showing the 1-1 Titans vs. 1-1 Giants for the early game. WTF?
Seriously, does anybody who knows anything about football ever make these decisions?
Last week it was the freakin’ crappy Dolphins vs. Vikings game instead of the Steelers vs. Titans.
Why would they not show the game between the undefeated Steelers and Bucs?
Seriously? Are they just purposely tring to make my head explode?

I just can’t understand why they’d bring Leftwich back if he’s not going to play? Hmm? It couldn’t have anything to do with Leftwich’s intimate knowledge of the Bucs offense? It was only last season, he couldn’t possibly remember anything worth sharing. And if he did I’m sure Mike Tomlin wouldn’t want to know. No NFL coach wants to have an unfair advantage.
Can you tell I’m being sarcastic? And could the Steelers be any more transparent?

  12. Krashie21 says: Sep 22, 2010 4:39 PM

Does it really matter who starts? That defense is a killer right now……..
Steelers Nation has another SB contender on their hands and when Big Ben gets back, this team may be unstoppable.
As a Cowboys fan, it pains me to say that, but this team is poised for a serious run.

I GET IT!!!!! Batch will put forth less of a fight when Ben comes back….if Leftwich wins this game, and does well in the loss to Baltimore, then can argue that he should start………Lets just hope they dont play this one like they did the Browns, the Raiders and the Chiefs last year.

Batch will play mistake free football, while Mendenhall and Redman move the team down the field. Seriously, Batch is a good, safe choice. He has the respect of his teammates and coaches. He knows the offense, and will pick Leftwich’s brain for any information it might hold against the Bucs D. Besides, it’s the defense that’s going to win this game for Pittsburgh.
If Leftwich went in and threw for 300 yards sunday and again against Baltimore, it wouldn’t matter. This is Ben’s team.

.RT you are a moron, have you seen the QB play? Receivers are open the O line is better than last year and the D is awesome. They should be winning by 24 but are in squeakers. They and I will welcome and cheer Big Ben’s return. Remember he was never arrested or charged, god bless the greatest legal system in the world.

Do you really think we need any help beating the Bucs? You guys might be 2-0 but both of the teams you beat now sit at 0-2. Beating a couple of scrub teams doesn’t make TB scary at all, it just means you guys don’t suck quite as bad as you did last year.

Your statement is clearly wrong. Without Leftwich, the Steelers have only ONE healthy QB. No team enters a game with only ONE healthy QB. Leftwich played with the Steelers two seasons ago, he was signed before preseason this year, he knows the system, is familiar with the players, etc. If Tomlin is trying to dupe everyone to get an advantage over the lowly Bucs, then I’d be concerned over our team. We’d win this game with you plaiyng QB. Enjoy these 2 wins, you’ll be lucky to win a quarter of your remaining games.

As far as I am concerned, we are ahead of the game. I would have been happy at 2-2 without Ben, and we already got the 2 wins.
I would also start Batch. You have to get through 2 more games without Ben. If Leftwich starts and his knee is not ready, he could reinjure it quickly, leaving them with no backup other than El (and he’s not a QB). Batch has experience so the main thing he has to do is not make mistakes. He has to be used as long as they can afford it. Their defense is good enough that they don’t need to score a lot of points. Hell, they might win 3-0! And if they do, that is fine with me.
But, after these 4 games, I am looking forward to Ben’s return. He will be completely rested, injury free, and ready to light up the league to prove himself. I expect him to be very motivated. Combine a high-scoring offense with our defense, and it give me the chills.
    GO STEELERS!!

Did anyone watch the Steelers-Titans game? Yeah, Batch’s stats sucked, but he actually threw some crisp, tight spiral passes that were dropped. His numbers should have been better. Even Tomlin noted that in his press conference. OK, so Charlie is gettin’ up there at 35. He has skills – if he can keep from being so brittle.
I like the move. The Steelers will run more of their offense with Batch in there. He will be fine.
If the Steelers don’t lose their edge on defense and don’t look past the Bucs, they should be 3-0. But, again people, games are won on the field.

He is obviously going with the healthy Batch in a game they should be able to win, while giving Leftwitch one more week to heal up for the Ravens where they will need to generate some offense to win.

  36. Myroncope7 says: Sep 22, 2010 6:28 PM

We will beat B-more and Tamp Bay. We will be 4-0 without Ben. I would start Leftwich though IF he is truly healthy. Batch is shaky and looks very bad, his passes are so slow and lack zip.
You guys are idiots if you think Leftwich will want the job. He was told his role on the team (Bens backup) and he understands that. Why are you guys so insecure? No need to be.

    It could be worse.
Dennis Dixon was 14 spots (out of 32) higher than Flacco after the first 2 games of the season. The drop off from Dixon to Batch isn’t as significant as trying to start a ‘franchise’ quarterback with a passer rating of 41.2. To put that in perspective, Jason Cambell has a passer rating of 61.9 and got benched.

  39. DirtDawg55 says: Sep 22, 2010 7:05 PM

19 yards of offence isn’t so bad if you only have 18 yards to go.
And KimFromTampa, you’ve been out in the sun too long. The Steelers brought Leftwich back because they only have one QB – Batch. Big Ben is suspended and Dixon had surgery. He ain’t playing. So they need at least one other guy to hold a clipboard and Byron is it. Given he was on the opening day roster this shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone unless they had the IQ of a coffee table.

  40. Black-n-Gold D = Black-n-Blue says: Sep 22, 2010 7:11 PM

Steelers will run the table until Ben gets back. Mostly on D-Fense. Bmore will be coming off a win against Cleveland and let their guard down enough to let the Steelers D clamp down on ‘em. It’s gonna be a Flacco blood bath.
I just hope Ben isn’t rusty or slow to get up-to-speed. Either way, as long as we stay healthy, the D will win games at the rate their going.

  41. Deb says: Sep 22, 2010 7:17 PM

One game at a time. I’m glad we’re going with Batch. Let’s pray everyone has a good, injury-free game, and that the defense continues to dominate. Two down, two to go.

Citizen Strange says: Also, in Los Angeles CBS is showing the 1-1 Titans vs. 1-1 Giants for the early game. WTF?
I’ll second your disbelief at this. I don’t know how big a contingent of Steelers fans exists here in Southern California, but I would have to imagine that there are more of them than there are Giants fans.
Seriously, does anybody who knows anything about football ever make these decisions?
Well . . . no. These decisions are made according to some arcane territorial map which is drawn up based on primary, secondary, and tertiary “home markets.” It has to do with what team “owns” a given region. In theory, the NFL should establish these markets based on a survey of fan allegiance, but I suspect the allotment is far more often dictated by the financial considerations of the owners. It’s why they kept shoving Rams games down our throats well after the team abandoned the area. We were a secondary “home market” for the team, even though there weren’t enough Rams fans left here to fill a good-sized sports bar.
Last week it was the freakin’ crappy Dolphins vs. Vikings game instead of the Steelers vs. Titans.
    Farve.
Why would they not show the game between the undefeated Steelers and Bucs?
More former USC players on the Titans-Giants roster than Steelers-Bucs? Dunno, really.
Seriously? Are they just purposely trying to make my head explode?
Yes. Yes they are. Don’t give ‘em the satisfaction; Go out for a nice loooong breakfast, set the TiVo for Women’s Golf so you cost CBS one-millionth of a Ratings Point, and settle in for the afternoon game.
Oh. . . It’s San Diego at Seattle?
    Never mind.

  43. Spoonthis says: Sep 22, 2010 7:30 PM

@jediwrstlr – I know you are a fellow Steeler fan but you don’t get it. No one will compete with Ben after the first four games whether 0-4 or 4-0. Ben is proven franchise QB. End of story.
@.RT – The Steelers do need Ben. The D is playing awesome but will not produce 7 turnovers every week and the specials teams won’t put points on the board every week. Right now, Jeff Reed is the Steelers offensive MVP and that’s not good.
This is going to be a home game for the Steelers, they’ll be wearing black jerseys again and I’m sure this will be on tv. I heard only 2000 tickets left. The Glazers suck but they will buy them up because this may be the only home game that the Tampa Bay area will see this year.
@KimFromTampa – “I just can’t understand why they’d bring Leftwich back if he’s not going to play?”
Are you serious or just clueless? The Steelers would only have 1 active QB on Sunday if they didn’t sign Leftwich. Do you really think the Steelers D needs info from Byron about the Bucs juggernaut of an offense? I think Josh Freeman has promise but not this week. He is going to look more confused than Vince Young.

    @spoonthis-
I didn’t say Ben wouldn’t get the start when he gets back. I said Batch would put up less of a fight. Leftwich still thinks he is a starting QB….and would create more of a ‘scene’ if you will when the Steelers hand the spot back to Ben. Better if it is a gracful move, rather than something like Philly has right now.
@7th Heaven- I am a realistic Steelers fan, we will lose to the Ravens, then destroy them later into the season. Dixon is our best QB w/o Ben, and last year……he couldnt get it done. Baltimore is stout against the run, and Batch couldn’t convert a third down to save his life. I understand your a big fan, I am too, but I dont live in la la land. 7 turnovers will not happen agains Baltimore.

I totally agree with you on this. I live in Pa and the NFL forces half of this state to watch the Ravens because they say we are closer to Bmore than Pittsburg. They know we are not Ravens fans, but this is the game they play to try and force us to pay for the NFL game ticket. What we all need to do here in Pa or anywhere the NFL pulls this , is to boycot all the sponsers that they have and maybe then the NFL will get rid of this stupid rule they have after they lose money via these sponsers.
