Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean had a report on Tuesday that Titans quarterback Vince Young was excused for part of a team meeting last week. That report raised some eyebrows among Titans fans who were wondering why Young would want to miss a meeting prior to a big game — a game that would feature Young getting benched and the Titans losing.
The answer is that Young was spending time with Steve McNair’s sons.
Young has mentored McNair’s sons since their father died, and in a follow-up item today Wyatt writes that Young took Tyler and Trent McNair to a “Dear Dads Breakfast,” an event head coach Jeff Fisher gave him permission to attend several weeks ago.
“He showed up, took them, brought them to school and was quite the hit,” said Julie Dilworth, admissions director at St. Paul Christian Academy. “He has been so good to those boys. He does a lot with them, great things. I love that it wasn’t just words for him when he said he would help. He has stepped up and done it, and it is a blessing.”
If he was excused three weeks prior – where’s the news?
its not like vince doesn’t have countless bastard children of his own running around everywhere. maybe he should focus on getting them some daddy time.
Good job Vince! Now if a few hundred other players can find a way to grow up…
Even though my beloved Steelers rolled this guy on Sunday, I am so touched at his attempt to reach out to these kids and help guide them thru this tought stage of their life.
Good stuff:)
Say what you want about his play on the football, but Vince Young is a great guy and this is another reminder of just that. Good stuff VY
I hate the Titans. I hate Chris Johnson. I think Jeff Fisher is hugely overrated. But I really hope Vince Young turns out to be a fantastic Quarter Back in this league.
Kudos to Vince!
Antonio Cromartie will be excused for the month of October to attend his, 6?, 7?, 8? “whose my daddy days” that he has attend.
Nice to hear about pro athletes doing good things. We hear so much about the thugs and dullards who can’t manage their lives, it gives the appearance that most are like that.
Good for you, Vince. Football will be short lived compared to a lifetime of difference you are making in those boys lives.
Great story, a wonderful thing Vince is doing for those kids.
VY is growing up before our eyes…
Yea, Vince Young is a great guy…when he isnt fighting people in strip clubs…
Big Ups Vince
You have to love some of the comments here. Here’s a guy doing something really exceptional out of the good of his heart to help these kids. Yet some of the commenters on this board still find a way to bash him. It’s pathetic. What exactly have you done that is so special that it gives you the right to trash someone else for doing good?

I am now a Vince Young fan !!! Good guy !
good stuff for Vince….To smartazzes commenting…should he go out and rob someone????? Or decide to be a beacon of light and role model to young boys????
The entitlement some of you MOFO’s have like you live a perfect life….incredible…..
I can’t believe people are actually hating on VY right now. You might hate him as a player, but after reading this you have no heart if you hate him as a person.

Stay classy.
At least Vince is putting in the time and not shoplifting the pootie.
You always have IDIOT comments on here, like the first couple on here, people that just wanna be heard even if they put their feet in their mouths !!! Vince is playin a positive role in those boys lives !!! Much respect and continued success 2 you Vince !!!

LOL that’s so wrong.
But seriously, mad props to Vince. This is the type of publicity the NFL needs. He’s a good guy at heart. Dumb as rocks, but a great person.
Wow. I cannot believe some of the venom spewed by hateful fans. Here’s a guy doing the right thing and people still cannot give him a break. He may never end up being a Hall Of Fame player, but he is a Hall Of Fame role model to those boys.
Great job Vince.
so many haters on here.. i guess it’s much easier to knock someone down for doing a nice thing, than it is to admit it, and compliment them for it.
Haters, go home.
I can not think of someone who is no more qualified than the man on the moon to mentor any youngster more than vince young. he’s a punk.
Cool there fella. Nice to see something positive. maybe he’s not such a bhole with a keyhole.
every ounce of the report and the tebaggers have to make some negative derogatory comment about it. gg.
still cant figure out the haters on this sight….oh wait, they r just jealous losers,i 4got.
This is a good story, you should be ashamed of yourself for posting something rotten.. You’re a bottom feeder, you probably hate old people and little kids too.. Karma is coming for you and she’s not gonna put it on you kindly..
It’s good that he has taken an interest in Mcnair’s kids.
It’s a sad situation and the only funny part of it is when he’s with Mcnair’s kids, it’s 3 boys with an elementary mind that cannot read an NFL defense.
We love you, Vince. Just hang on to that football
All you jags who have to come on here and make comments like that should rot.
Robert ethan, he’s not involved with their mom he is a surrogate father to someone else’s children. Way to make a stereotypical comment without even reading the entire 3 paragraphs, let alone knowing what your talking about in the first place.
Dzimmo, why do you think he has his own children running around somewhere? Have you ever heard any reports about that? Or is it maybe because he’s a pro athlete? Or even worse, because he’s an african american athlete?
Heaven forbid he receive some positive accolades for doing a good thing, probably more than you SOB’s will do in a lifetime, without getting badmouthed and generalized by dbags. I mean the guy threw 3 picks sunday, at least make a cheap pun about that. Sweet sassy molassy.
Let’s be nice. I know most of you are really good people. You don’t have to come on here and try to act tough to get attention or put on a fake facade or persona like I used to do. That can’t possibly make you feel good about yourself. And, such behavior might even get you suspended by Mr. Mike Florio (who I also own an apology to. I’m sorry) like I have in the past. Just be yourself and people will like you:)
The feel good story of the day…
It is nice to hear a positive story about an athlete. The reason we don’t hear more of them is the same reason the nightly news isn’t filled with stories about Joe and Jane Citizen going to work, taking care of their kids, giving to charity, and trying to be good citizens. The squeaky wheels get the press coverage.
Young might make a franchise QB if he were allowed to work through his difficult moments. You don’t bench your offensive leader because he’s having a bad day. No one sat Flacco, Romo, or Favre. The outcome didn’t change for any of the four teams, but Young’s confidence and leadership were undermined for no good reason.
Wonder if they went parasailing??
Good job Vince, even though you have your own issues to deal with, its great to see that you lighten up the lives of 2 kids who really need it right now. Keep it up, and I hope you resolve your own issues and maintain a great relationship with those kids
I can’t stand Vince Young but it is good to see him doing this. Not many professional athletes would be so willing. Good for him.
In a leauge that is headlined by negatives almost daily, It is refreshing to see someone taking a step to better the lives of some young kids. I am happy this was posted here. Good read and even better job Vince!
To Chicago Ho:
What if it was cause he’s black??? You got a problem with ignorant people or something?
great thing to do…probably means a lot to the kids…that being said, not sure i’d want VY mentoring my kids.

I hope this was not somehow misconstrued as a slam on Vince, just the opposite. The NFL needs more men like him, it’s the few hundred others I spoke of that keep me from watching the games with my kid. I like watching football as much as the next guy, I just hate having to explain to my daughter why I’m watching a bunch of millionaire punks, wife beaters, dog killers, felons and just plain thugs.
Good job VY.
No matter what else he may do in his life . . .
This makes him a winner in my book.
Good for you, Vince! It’s great to see stories like this.
I bet most of the haters are all USC fans that can’t forgive him for beating their team in the National Championship a few years back!! LOL Get over your prejudices and just see a good deed, as a good deed!!! Keep it up Vince, If there were more positive role models in this world, and more people who took the time to step in and influence our youth, i believe we’d have a lot less PacMan Jones’ running around!
Not a Vince Young fan by any means, but he is truly doing something positive for those boys .
Kudos to VY it is good to see some positive news on here. I believe most of the haters are teabaggers that hate everything and everyone. They must live miserable lives!
AWESOME! You know sometimes the game just isn’t as important.

I think most everyone does you POS.
Why don’t you go drink som anti freeze? No one on here or in your pathetic life would miss you.
Think about it.
Yeah great guy huh? Maybe this was also an excuse to hit the strip clubs again and punch out a smaller fella? Or maybe he wanted to go take his shirt off in a club with a bunch of dudes and chug a bottle of tequila!
Wish I could just take off from work and take my god son to school for the day. Sadly I have a job that requires me to actually work!
This is great to hear, Vince Young looked up to Steve McNair, glad to hear he’s there for McNair’s sons
Good for Vince, glad to hear this!
Hopefully neither of the kids shows him upside horns though
He didn’t really miss any time either. He came in on Monday (player’s normal day off) for film study.
Man Titans fans must be tough if there has to be an explanation for his absence. When I heard Young was benched I had to laugh. Will you ever let him the the starter and give him the confidence to just play?
Way to go Vince. You are being a great role model.
You can say what you want about VY as a professional, but he is obviously a caring man.
I wonder if Cincinnati is going to stage another Dead Steve McNair Halloween display this year.
Stay Classy Cincy.
Tinbender, my post was not directed at you, I was agreeing with you and putting down some pathetic posters on this website.
RC IV…that is really swell of you. I like how you maturally try to clear up such a misunderstanding without being hostile or angry.
Nicely done Vince!!!
Why is everyone bashing Vince Young for getting benched? He was getting killed out there. Fisher tried to get a spark…what’s the big deal. I would’ve pulled the QB of the future too. Collins didn’t do anything either (please don’t count the last 4 minutes, we all know what a prevent defense will do). Anyway, back to the article. Vince took a day off to spend with those kids. Good for the kids and him. To those of you who complained about Vince taking time off…remember they “work” on Sunday. Monday is a day off.
signed,
a Steelers fan.
@mikeg11117 …
Bashing? Young??
The only post I see about VY getting benched is mine, and it’s criticizing Fisher (nothing personal) not Young. It’s simply a football critique posted on a football blog.
I’ve never liked that strategy. It’s one thing to play musical QBs w/Leftwich, Batch, and Dixon. But when you’re playing with the future of the franchise, it’s unproductive. It rarely “sparks” the offense and only undermines the starter’s confidence and leadership. The only time it’s justified is at game’s end, when the score is hopelessly out of reach and you’re trying to protect your starter from injury.
If I was dead and he was “mentoring” my son I’d be spinning in my grave at about 10,000 RPM.
