Raiders muzzle Jason Campbell

The Oakland Raiders don’t want Jason Campbell to add any fuel to their quarterback controversy, and so they’ve told him not to talk to the media.

Campbell, who’s been benched for Bruce Gradkowski, declined to be interviewed on Thursday, Vittorio Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Campbell said he would have been happy to answer questions, but the team asked him not to talk to reporters.

How long the Raiders can keep Campbell quiet is an open question, but for now they want the man who just last week was their starting quarterback to be not seen and not heard.

If the guy played with any passion at all, he’d still be starting.
His demeanor stinks, better he doesn’t talk.

Be careful what you wish for, Jason.
Every year, everyone trips all over themselves to say this is the year the Raiders turn it around and become respectable, and every year they are in the news for the wrong reasons by week three.
Fabricate quotes from your head coach? Muzzle the QB you just benched after hailing him as the second coming of Jim Plunkett?
This organization is a dumpster fire. They will always be three or four wins per season lower than what their on field talent appears to be capable of because of the chinese fire drill that is their management.
And then they will win 3 meaningless games in a row at the end of the year to finish 7-9 and everyone will fall all over themselves proclaiming that 2011 is the year the Raiders turn it around.
    Again.

This is no surprise. Campbell could not make it in Washington, what make the Raiders think he could make it in Oakland?

  4. LunarPie says: Sep 24, 2010 8:51 AM

Oh ok, the Raiders should let the media brainwash Campbell to believe he is getting ripped off?!?! I don’t think so. The brass is sparing the team from the media BS by telling Campbell to stay away from them luring him into a controversy. Bruce Gradkowski is the better quarterback for this team right now and is starting Sunday.

Nice try at creating some drama out of nothing, but those of us with half a brain already know nothing comes out of Oakland that isn’t meant to come out. Just look at how long you mediots drooled waiting for the Raiders to finally authorize Hue Jackson to talk to the media.
Bottomline, in Oakland you are instructed not to speak to the media except when it is mandatory by League rules.

wow…just last year everyone was saying that Campbell was a solid starting QB and it was only the Redskins’ disfunction that was keeping him down. After a rough ride in Washington, he gets another chance, only to be treated like this.
He’s obviously only a mediocre QB, who probably should be a backup; however, he’s always been a classy guy and it’s rough to see him treated like crap.
On the other hand, if you have a 10 year career in the NFL, that’s still a pretty good job…let’s hope he’s saving his money wisely so at least he has something to show for all the angst…

  29. Brad says: Sep 24, 2010 10:09 AM

Why do you have to feel for Jason Campbell? Has anyone with less talent ever been given so many opportunities in the NFL? Think of all the guys riding pine waiting for their chance to play… and there’s Jason Campbell leading one of the worst offenses in the league for 4 straight seasons. Kolb’s a good example, actually. He waited his turn, then the Eagles gave him a sum total of two quarters to prove himself. Campbell had the longest leash in the league for years, for seemingly no reason whatsoever. Every time he’s out, the offense picks up. Every time he returns and they go back to sucking, out come the excuses.
By all accounts he’s a nice guy, but he’s a bad quarterback. Second coming of Joey Harrington, in my opinion.

  30. RIP__21 says: Sep 24, 2010 10:24 AM

Happy Bunny this guy has been given every opportunity in the world to become a starting caliber qb. He just doesnt have it.
Cant read defenses, very poor pocket awareness, and no fire in the belly. I used to fall asleep listening to his monotone voice when local sports radio would interview him.
I actually like the guy but I’m glad hes not the starter of my boys any longer. No shame in becoming a career backup; which would suit him perfectly.

  31. Griffin says: Sep 24, 2010 10:27 AM

The raiders front office couldn’t see what the entire redskins fan base could. Campbell is not an NFL starting qb. Sure, people can blame it on the o-line but even with protection he’s inaccurate. With pressure he’s a disaster waiting to happen. I actually feel sorry for the guy. It’s not his fault that idiot GMs for the skins and raiders put him in a position to fail.

Sad thing is the Skins will probably wish they had him back when McNabb gets hurt or goes to another team next year . Unless ofcourse they think John Beck is going to get it don for them .

    ——-
Not sure what you mean by this. He’s been given plenty of opportunities. The only thing that he ever showed skins fans is that he can move the ball against prevent defense, in between the 20’s. He’s the master of the check down dink and dunk pass, he has no pocket presence, he can’t do a quarter back slide, he’s horrible in the red zone, he has a cannon for an arm but has no touch, he’s great with a scripted message to the media, he loves to “go back and look at the film”, and he’s a nice guy.

Looks like the same old Raiders. You know, the team who currently owns the NFL record for losing eleven (11) games or more in seven (7) consecutive seasons. The Raiders are an awful, awful team with, or without, career backup Gradkowski as the starting QB. Congrats Raiders, an NFL record eighth straight season with at least eleven losses looks very attainable.

  40. mwcarolina says: Sep 24, 2010 10:49 AM

(“He’s obviously only a mediocre QB”)
    i agree, that’s all he’s ever been.
(“It’s not his fault that idiot GMs for the skins and raiders put him in a position to fail”)
he’s not in a position to fail, he’s just never became what the Redskins wanted. He’s an average passer who needs a strong running game around him so he can manage the game. He’s not one that will win throwing 30 or more times, he never took the Redskins to a playoff game, but his backup Todd Collins did. Campbell is an average passer.

  41. Big_Al says: Sep 24, 2010 10:57 AM

The 4th round pick is conditional.
“For the Redskins to get that fourth-round pick, the Raiders would either have to make the playoffs or Campbell would have to go to the Pro Bowl.”
However, under those terms, if Campbell isn’t the starting QB and the Raiders make the play-offs under Gradowski, do they still owe the 4th rounder? That’s the question.

Got my fingers crossed that Vick keeps kicking ass for Philly.
At least with Kolb onboard our QB “controversy” would feel more real. Campbell holds onto the ball like Hostetler used to, that’s why he’s getting killed back there.

What a sad sack of an unorganized douchebags. You barely hang on to beat a team that has lost 27 of their last 28 games, and the second coming of Plunkett lasts all of 6 quarters into the season. Pathetic. Even with our gm A.J. (Yes I know the Lord of No Rings)Smith screwing up the roster, we’re still gonna extend the dominance over the terrible Faider franchise to 14 and then 15 games. With San Diego so terrible, what does that say about your franchise? Wait, let me help your response, no rings, rivers sucks, Tomlinson’s a crybaby, all that talent and no rings, superchokers….blah, blah, blah. The raiders blow and everyone in the league knows it with the exception of the delusional raider fan base. But, since they’re all criminals and welfare junkies, what do you really expect?

  48. PriorKnowledge says: Sep 24, 2010 11:54 AM

Oakland gave up only a 4th round pick to get Jason Campbell. They don’t pay him an outlandish salary nor too much money up front or guaranteed.
The decision to trade for JC was not a bad decision by Oakland. He seemed like a good fit for the game that Oakland plays. All though all the facts are not in and his time in Oakland is not through, it may not have turned out well.
Burn Al Davis for other decisions he’s made (like Heyward-Bey), but this one was a reasonable gamble.

Now after a few OTAs and pre-season games and being introduced to yet another offensive philosophy, is expected to beat out a guy who’s been there for two years, who knows the offense and is familiar with the coaches. Frankly it was only a matter of time. There’s a reason the Raiders organization is terrible and will continually be no better than a 6-7 win team every year. So glad to be a STEELERS fan!

@rangersleadtheway: I hate to say it, but you are an idiot. You might want to know what is happening in the Raiders stadium before you talk ish about other teams not selling out. With that I present to you the hilarious facts below,
“In 2009, once again the Raiders struggled to sell tickets, resulting in 7 of their 8 home games being blacked out on local television. The Raiders were able to sell out their season opener, on Monday Night Football against the Chargers, thanks to a deadline extension from the NFL. But, the remainder of their home games were not shown on local television, because the games didn’t sell out. The Raiders finished the season tied with the Jacksonville Jaguars for most TV blackouts in 2009. But, blackouts are nothing new to Oakland fans, as the Raiders have sold out only 25 of 88 regular season games, since returning to Oakland. The Raiders had 3 games with attendances under 40,000, with their lowest attendance coming in week 11 against the Bengals when they drew only 34,112.”

Jason Campbell is a team player and will do whatever the team asks of him. Campbell is a bit more cerebral in his play calling than Gradkowski. This lends to the notion that Jason has no passion for the game.

Rangers…I wouldn’t be so proud to be calling myself a Raiders fan if I were you. Bruce had a good game against the Steelers LAST year. In case you haven’t noticed its a NEW season! We all know the model of consistency the Raiders coaching staff is, but if Bruce is still the QB when we play again THIS YEAR…let’s see if Bruce makes it through the game.
