Saints will bring in kickers

Saints kicker Garrett Hartley missed a 29-yard field goal in overtime today, setting up the Falcons on their game-winning drive.

It could have been his last kick as a Saint.

Peter King of NBC’s Football Night in America reports that the Saints will bring in kickers for tryouts this week. That doesn’t necessarily mean Hartley is gone, but it certainly means Hartley is on the hot seat.

Within a week of being named NFC special teams player of the week for his performance on Monday night against the 49ers, Hartley could be out of work.

I’d cut him too. You just absolutely CAN NOT miss a kick like that. With as limited a role as kickers have, they have to be nearly 100% accurate when called on. Absolutely have to.

Payton is doing the right thing to light a fire under Hartley’s butt. With divisional games often coming down to a single play, you need a reliable kicker 20-40 yard kicker.

  3. Terrell Blowens says: Sep 26, 2010 8:09 PM

After a good postseason people started talking about him like he was Adam Vinatieri. I knew he was overrated. But I don’t think he will be cut… it just doesn’t make sense

29 yarders should be gimmies in the NFL. Miss one or two in a season is horrible.
Missing a 29 yarder in OT for the win….unaccecptable.
Sure he kicked the winner to get the Saints to the Super Bowl but they want to get back to the big game. Kickers that miss easy ones like that will only hold them back from their goal.

  6. Jeff Harper says: Sep 26, 2010 8:17 PM

I’m amazed that Hartley has made this long. I question Payton not giving this hack any competion in training camp. All Hartley does is kick field goals and extra points. Morstead handles punting and kickoffs. I’m glad he got us in the Super Bowl and set a record but come on…..a 29 yarder in overtime? That line, you see Hartley, it’s called unemployment.

  7. Franchise says: Sep 26, 2010 8:19 PM

They should try out some new head coaches too.
Try a FG on 1st down with one of the best offenses in the NFL. BRILLIANT!!

  8. Atlas says: Sep 26, 2010 8:20 PM

Fickle. I think the Saints would be crazy to cut Hartley.
He may have missed this kick, but he has built up enough credit to let this one slide IMO.
It’s better to have a kicker that has built up a body of work than most they can bring in.
Would you rather have Hartley, an antique, or a well-below average FA kicker?

  9. PurplePeopleBeaters says: Sep 26, 2010 8:20 PM

I smell Viqueens fans already. I know those crybabies will be here. So I’ll strike first.
Viqueens should bring in head coaching candidates, quarterbacks, wide receivers, offensive linemen, defensive lineman and defensive backs.
    Flame on Viqueens!

  10. Buck Stallion says: Sep 26, 2010 8:21 PM

It’s correct that a kicker needs to make a 29 yarder. But will they really be able to find a better kicker right now, who is not on a roster?

  11. DirtDawg55 says: Sep 26, 2010 8:28 PM

Yeah, they aren’t going to cut him. All teams bring in potential replacements just for the heck of it.

  12. whodaywhodat says: Sep 26, 2010 8:30 PM

Good. But Falcons have a great team, they deserve the win. Not hangin’ the head. Should be a good race in the dirty, dirty south.

Isn’t this the same guy who got them to the Super Bowl? WOW the Aints fans are already acting stupid. Just like every other team don’t leave the game up to a kicker. So since Drew threw 2 int he should be benched…shut up, you lost a game get over it. Your really not that good, better be prepared for more……

Dude messed up, definitely doesn’t justify losing his job though… Every kicker misses an important kick at some point. His leg has helped get them more wins than losses. Plus… the kickers in FA are there for a reason.

  19. 49er Man says: Sep 26, 2010 9:43 PM

This is precisely why you don’t pay more than $1 for fantasy kicker. Hartley may be done in New Orleans.

Or, here’s an idea: How about an NFL kicker makes a 29-yard field goal kicking in his own dome? If the Saints don’t kick there and they fumble (as Chris Ivory did on a fourth-and-1 earlier in the game), then you’re all screaming about what dumb decision it was not to kick the field goal. How about occasionally we blame the players?

Yep, you’re right. We played like crap (horrible 3rd and 4th down defense, Brees pulling a Favre x 2, fumbling when we were driving, etc.) and yet, we lost because for some reason a coach that usually has more stones than Mt. Rushmore decided to let the kicker shank a chipshot.
As it happened, it was my 4 year old son’s first game today, and we had a great, actually perfect time. He was standing up in his seat yelling “who dat!” when we thought we recovered a fumble.
The Falcons deserved the win, and they are a good team. They pressured Brees – which few teams are ever able to do. The upshot is this, when the Saints play well, they win. When they play poorly, they usually win. And when they play like crap, they lose because the kicker shanks a gimme. If that’s “average”, then the rest of the league must really suck. :)

all those dropped passes .. missed field goal .. dity birds look great .. even with double coverage (not good double coverage i might add) ryan was on the money. should hartley be dropped . NO! should hartley have to win every game for the saints? hell NO! conclusion: saints need to wake up . shake off the past years hype . and secure themselves under the elite teams in the past present and future … WHO DAT!?!?!?

I agree with whoever said it before…i’m suprised he has made it this long. one of the most on and off kickers i’ve seen. he misses a couple the 1st week makes the game winner the 2nd and misses the game winner the 3rd. and it wasn’t even a far kick.

And yes, we are really that good. When we play well, we win, when we play poorly, we usually win, and when we play like crap we sometimes lose because the kicker shanks a gimme.

    Paging Morten Anderson…….
    Paging Morten Anderson……..
I did not agree with trying a FG on 1st down, even with the percentages. Should have been a play action pass with a one look and throw if open, or throw away if covered. Try that twice and on 3rd down line up the ball in the middle of the field. Then try the FG.
All in all the Falcons played a near flawless game, Saints played ok at best and Brees had 2 INT’s. Without the turnovers the Saints win………ever heard a fan base blame a loss on turnovers? I sure have…..
