Jimmy Raye gets run away from Niners

Earlier this morning, Rosenthal posted that 49ers coach Mike Singletary gave offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye the dreaded vote of confidence.  Singletary specifically said that Raye will remain in the job for the rest of the season.

Apparently, the 49ers’ season is over.  (As a practical matter, it possibly is.)

Jason LaCanfora of NFL Network reports that Raye has been fired.

Unless Singletary decided to pull an Andy Reid about-face in a matter of hours, it’s possible that the order came from higher up in the organization, possibly with a “fire Raye or you’re out” ultimatum.

Then again, we continue to believe that no one in the 49ers organization would have the nerve to tell Singletary that he’s out of a job.

Still, the move brings to mind whispers around the league the Singletary wasn’t ready to become a head coach after being elevated into the position during the 2008 season.

LaCanfora also reports that Mike Johnson has been promoted into Raye’s job.  Two weeks ago, Singletary and others in the organization suspected that Johnson was the “rat” who spoke to the media about Raye’s actual or perceived flaws in calling plays quickly.

Well, that didnt last. Flush this season down the drain folks, time to look to next year.
Lets see if the 49ers screw up again and draft locker over luck

Love Mike but he isnt head coach quality just yet. He just always looks lost out there with what to do. If anything its showing this year. I dont blame Alex Smith whatsoever. Their team just looks as lost as the coach which says it all. Great motivator but not a great coach…yet.

  3. superb owl says: Sep 27, 2010 11:07 AM

of course they would. the way the niners were going, with clueless vanilla raye, they would be extremely lucky to go .500 after losing in atlanta next sunday.
they also ought to bench crabtree.

    ==============
Please tell me you’re saying this tongue-in-cheek. What, are they afraid he will physically assault them?
I don’t know much about Jimmy Raye, but I think he could probably kick the crap out of John or Denise York as well, yet they someone mustered the courage to poopcan him.

  8. NinerDynasty says: Sep 27, 2010 11:18 AM

About Time!! i said it from from the start of the season.. this Team will not succeed as long as Raye is the O.coordinator and Smith the QB. now we just need to replace the QB and this team should be in good shape.

  9. joetoronto says: Sep 27, 2010 11:19 AM

    What a mess.
I’d be surprised if Singletary didn’t quit after this.

  10. Jack Acid says: Sep 27, 2010 11:20 AM

As sick as this may sound, this makes yesterday’s embarrassment worth it.
Jimmy Raye was never the answer and it was painfully obvious. Niners have too much talent to struggle this bad on offense.
Singletary proves he smarter than he can appear and makes the RIGHT CALL at the RIGHT TIME.
Now let’s see what this up-and-coming pup Mike Johnson can do.

  11. City_Native says: Sep 27, 2010 11:20 AM

You mean our team will have more than two plays now? Run up the middle & Pass to the flat?
    Wow.
Good job to the Chiefs yesterday.
    Go Niners!

  14. Jack Acid says: Sep 27, 2010 11:22 AM

PS to PFT — this is why the “rat” story re: Johnson being behind it was faulty. He knew he was next in line, why risk internal scrutiny for the sake of media leak?
My guess is it was a player, possibly former.

  15. RetiredFantasyFootballBackup says: Sep 27, 2010 11:26 AM

I know this might be a lot to ask. But, WHAT is there to make us believe Mike Johnson can do this job? Perhaps, discussing his credentials, successes, and failures, might be report-worthy?
Geez. His Wikipedia history makes me think he’s just a journeyman getting his big shot – good luck with that with a head case QB and a Prima Donna WR.
As Crabtree said in the SF Chronicle toady: “All I can do is my job. I can’t really worry about what Alex is doing.”

Where are all the big-talking Niner fans now? These our your boys that you spent ample time posting about a first place season. Alex Smith and the Niners will take the division? Not with a lunatic head coach, a compromised coaching staff, and two draft picks that have retired or forced a trade this season? What a joke. The offense looked horrific against KC. How are those two starting rookie tackles working out?

  19. StevieMo says: Sep 27, 2010 11:31 AM

  21. JustAGuy says: Sep 27, 2010 11:34 AM

Was wondering when SF would do something about an offense that didn’t get a TD in two of three games.
The defense gave up a lot of points in Seattle and KC so at this point everything looks bad.

  22. thekenfl says: Sep 27, 2010 11:34 AM

This has become a epic meltdown. All off-season, the Niners have assumed they were going to the playoffs in the weak NFC West, yet they have the worst record in the division. Yes Niner fans, even the Rams have more wins then you.

  23. jester says: Sep 27, 2010 11:41 AM

well now, at least the play calling won’t be as Boring!

  24. trippen says: Sep 27, 2010 11:41 AM

Singletary would make a better PE coach with that stupid stopwatch he wears around his neck. He should use it to time how long it takes to call a play.
And, if i wore a big wooden cross around my neck to work, i’m pretty sure HR would talk to me.
singletary tries to be old school but that doesn’t work anymore

  29. Brian Spears says: Sep 27, 2010 11:52 AM

I like Mike Singletary, I think he is good coach. I think he does need better General Manager and help picking the right Offensive coach. Jimmy Ray has never been in the top 2/3 of league in offensive ranking. He is not very good.

You’re forgetting about the Redskins losing to the Rams. Got to see my neighbor’s reaction (huge skins fan) when he saw the score as we all watched the Eagles game. Hilarious.
Oh, and you’re a cockroach. :) Have a nice day.

  38. Kevin C says: Sep 27, 2010 12:17 PM

Alex Smith gets another coach fired. Mike Dinglebary will be next and then we will hear about how great the 49ers will be next season with their new coach. This cycle will continue every year until they realize Alex Smith is horrible. Why would any respectable coach, not talking about Dinglebary, take a job in San Fran with this coach killer at QB?

  39. mjk68 says: Sep 27, 2010 12:27 PM

Lets Get Sing out and make a call down to Stanford for Harbaugh. While were at it tell him its okay if he brings Luck with him.

  40. Scarlet&Gold says: Sep 27, 2010 12:30 PM

Yeah…if anyone thinks this is going to turn anything around in the short term they’re crazy. Who the hell is this Johnson guy? If anything, this just gives Sing even more power over the offense which is not a good thing.
Is that Cowher’s phone I hear ringing? Or Chucky’s?

So you shouldn’t say one thing to people’s face, and then do the exact opposite behind their back? This guy is a joke of a coach, people fell in love with his personality and intensity, and loved watching him play. He was crowned and has yet to accomplish anything. What a joke.

Raye was only following Dingletarys 1970′s offensive vision.
Dingletary was so thoroughly out-coached by Todd Hayley yesterday, I’d hate to see what Ken Whisenhunt is going to do to us, twice, this season.
I admit I fell for the hype, but when your coaching staff doesn’t know how to gameplan, let alone innovate…

    The Gospel according to PFT:
Reid is a two-faced skunk. (Meanwhile, his players respect the hell out of him for making a tough but obvious decision.)
Singletary is a stand-up guy. (Meanwhile, he fires his o-coordinator after giving him a vote of confidence. And his players seem confused at best, and don’t respect him at worst.)
Seems the Gospel is a little of of touch with the reality on both of those teams.

  50. City_Native says: Sep 27, 2010 1:31 PM

Who said the Niners are going to the Super Bowl? They were picked to win one of the worst divisions in football. Thats it. And they have played horrible since then.
I know its fun to pile on the team thats down, but at least be accurate.
Also, to everyone that is calling out Niners fans, we are all here. Remember things are cyclical, so when your team goes through a rough patch…lets see how you guys handle it.
Even at 0-3 the Niner Empire is still representing.

  54. Tinbender says: Sep 27, 2010 2:15 PM

How did they play as good as they did against the Saints? Yesterday was painfull to watch, and I’m not a 49er fan. I’ve seen high school teams better prepared, run more plays, adjust to the defence better, etc. Still running the ball in the fourth quarter is bad enough, but the same running plays that haven’t worked for the first three quarters? Just butt flippin’ ugly.
Oh, and how many more games till Craptree catches up to missing camp again?

Let’s say it all together, Niner fans: BASE SPREAD OFFENSE!
They obviously get no push in the running game, so why the Hell not try throwing aggressively? Alex would be more comfortable, and they could actually create mismatches with their athletic TEs and the great receivers out of the backfield in Gore & Westbrook. It’s a win-win!

  61. youngtorice says: Sep 27, 2010 4:20 PM

Luck will be Alex Smith V2. Locker will possibly be Ryan Leaf V2. They will take Mallet at about #6 in the draft lol. They won’t be #1 pick terrible, but I still have little faith until they bring in a head coach that knows the game and keeps his pants on. The only reason i see them picking a qb high is the new HC isn’t gonna want to start all over again with smith and certainly not with any other QB on the team
