This is common, just seldom reported. For example, Jon Gruden did this to both Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning earlier this year. Neither complained, as both enjoyed it immensely.

Both complaints have been from players who haven’t been in the league for long. I was under the impression that this sort of thing happens all the time when there are piles at the end of plays, especially if there’s a fumbled football at stake. Eye gouging, cratch grabbing/twisting, punching, slapping, scraping – anything you can do to get the football while you’re out of the ref’s view. It’s dirty, shameful behavior, but fairly normal during the course of the game, from what I hear. Maybe Smith is the only one doing this, or maybe he just happens to be the first one both these guys came across in their young NFL careers.

I really don’t get how Jeff Garcia got brought up in some of these comments. Aside from him not having played in San Fran for quite a while, didn’t he marry a playmate or something? I’m sure he lets her do all the junk grabbing.

I thought this was called a cup check. Unless he is stroking the inside of his thighs, which is bad. If I played an opponent who wasn’t wearing a cup he’d get a fist to the junk every other play. A closed fist though, not an open one.
