Steve Breaston undergoes knee surgery

Arizona’s beleaguered passing game just lost one of its best players.

Cardinals wide receiver Steve Breaston underwent surgery for a torn meniscus, according to Mike Jurecki of XTRA Sports 910 in Arizona. He’s expected to miss a “couple of games.”

With Larry Fitzgerald slow out of the gates, Breaston actually leads the Cardinals with 14 catches for 183 yards through three games. Arizona is also without third receiver Early Doucet, who is coming off groin surgery.

The Cardinals are likely going to have to rely on undrafted rookie Stephen Williams. Another undrafted rookie Max Komar could be No. 4. Derek Anderson, meanwhile, is playing behind a reconfigured and struggling offensive line.

Kurt Warner should be glad he’s retired right about now.

UPDATE: The Cardinals play two games before their bye week. Breaston is targeting a return after the bye. That’s also when the team hopes to get Doucet back.
