A few weeks back, Warren Sapp made waves when he called Bears defensive tackle Tommie Harris a “blind dog in a meat house.” Now Harris is in the doghouse.
Bears coach Lovie Smith said the decision to deactivate Harris (and wide receiver Devin Aromashodu) wasn’t punitive.
“We wanted to get a look at Marcus Harrison and Henry Melton inside. It was performance-based. Tommie has been doing everything we’ve wanted him to do.’'
Translation: Tommie just isn’t very good right now. Smith said the decision may only be for one game.
“We’ll go to practice this week and see who gives us the best chance to win,’' Smith said.
Smith is getting tougher with playing time. He benched cornerback Zack Bowman after a rough start to Monday night’s game. Aromashodu was on the bench after dropping passes in Week One and reportedly begging out of playing the slot.
Harris’ teammates were quick to defend the defensive tackle after the game, but we like the move from Smith. He’s keeping things from getting stale. Thus far, it’s working.
