The Jets wanted Trent Edwards for the reason you think

In Jacksonville, Trent Edwards could become an alternative to starter to David Garrard.

The other team that claimed Edwards partially did it for other reasons.

“The obvious thing would be we were going to pick his brain. Absolutely, that would be true,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said Wednesday when asked why he wanted Edwards.

Honesty is awesome.

“The other thing is, I think the young
man can play.  I think he’s a good quarterback and we always look at every
opportunity to make our team better,” Ryan said.

Ryan interestingly said he asked Kellen Clemens’ for the No. 3 quarterback’s blessing before making the claim.  Clemens was all for it, which indicates Edwards would have been the No. 4 guy in New York, and probably not for long.

Why would the Jets want to pick someone from Buffalo’s brain? Why would *anyone* feel the need to pick someone from Buffalo’s brain? To beat the Bills, you don’t need inside information, you just need to show up.

  2. Professor Booty says: Sep 29, 2010 7:46 PM

TD40, my thoughts exactly. Why on earth would you need help beating Buffalo?

  3. NYJALLFINGDAY says: Sep 29, 2010 7:50 PM

    @TD40
That is exactly how you lose to Buffalo. They’re capable of getting something together against a lazy team. Gave New England a bit of a duel.

  4. paranoidandroid says: Sep 29, 2010 7:52 PM

yeah i don’t get rexy’s answer either. what could edwards possibly know that would help the jets?
maybe we’re missing something here but it doesn’t add up.

  5. Richm2257 says: Sep 29, 2010 7:55 PM

Ryan got Clemens’ blessing as much as Andy Reid got Kevin Kolb’s blessing to start Michael Vick.

  6. Dave says: Sep 29, 2010 7:57 PM

I’m with TD 40. We would cut someone to get inside info on the Bills? I’ve got the perfect game plan right here, put 11 people on the field. That alone is good for a 3 touchdown win.

  7. FinFan68 says: Sep 29, 2010 7:59 PM

The easiest way to beat the bills is to show up when edwards was the starter…no need to pick his brain

Except that only one of the 3 losses has been by more than 1 TD. Did the Dolphins and Pats play with 8 guys or something?

  9. thegreenelantern says: Sep 29, 2010 8:03 PM

its a good idea, you pick him up and when another team in need of a QB gets desperate they will trade for him.

  10. ronetwo says: Sep 29, 2010 8:09 PM

Trent Edwards is so horrible he won’t even beat out Garrard…

  11. TheGuyWhoToldTimTebowToShutTheFup says: Sep 29, 2010 8:09 PM

Funny Dave. Didn’t the Jets lose to the Ravens 10-9? How many touchdowns did they get in that one?

  12. Occam says: Sep 29, 2010 8:20 PM

“So Trent, what do the Bills do on second-and-long?”
“Well, they call a pass play, and I underthrow the receiver.”
    “What about on third down?”
“Well, they call a pass play, and I overthrow the receiver.”
“Yeah. We’re gonna have to release you on Monday.”

    ======================================
You don’t know how bad Garrard is . Garrard SUCKS. His body language against Philly was he didn’t want to play. That’s what had bothered the coaches and the GM to bring in a QB.

  17. jeremyeatworld says: Sep 29, 2010 9:13 PM

Clemens takes it in the ass yet again…does this guy have a ball sack? at some point you have to man up rather than get dissed by the Jets every step of the way…poor guy takes a paycut just to stay on the roster, now hes gonna take a back seat to some loser from Buffalo? come on man grow a pair. tell the Jets to suck it and move on. you have a better chance of playing on any other team in the NFL than u do w the one your stuck on now, one that just screws u all he time…

————————————————————————————-Are you retarded or have you never watched football before? Are you seriously comparing the Baltimore Ravens to the Buffalo Bills, the team most likely to get the first pick in the draft. Just a stupid thing to say. If you don’t know what your talking about then don’t talk because that was just pure stupidity.

  27. Burritto says: Sep 29, 2010 10:49 PM

I’m no football player, but Rex Ryan sounds like the kind of guy I’d want to play for: honest and respectful. He has ZERO reason to ask Kellen Clemens for his blessing to do anything, but he’s considerate enough to do it.
I’m not a Jets fan, but I hope they succeed just so the NFL becomes a place more welcoming to people like Rex.

  30. MH767 says: Sep 29, 2010 11:51 PM

If Edwards knew anything about anything, why does he still suck? This doesn’t make sense.

  31. smithopher says: Sep 30, 2010 12:20 AM

@ anybody saying sanchez sucks – 6 TD, 0 INT. how many picks does your QB have? If you’re not an Indy or Philly fan, he has more than sanchez, and probably less TD’s too.
@ anybody bashing rex ryan – you’re upset that the best players on your team would gladly up and leave to join rex’s squad anytime now. regardless of what you say about the braylon edwards situation, rex stood by him, had his back. through any sort of adversity, rex ryan stands by his players. always. his players love to play for him. look at all these free agent acquisitions that have come to the jets and have been rejuvenated. tomlinson, taylor, cromartie. one sure to be in the HOF, one who’s got a good shot, one who was an all-pro a couple years back who looks like hes bouncing back. these guys would not be playing like this if they didn’t like being here. I was at the patriots game. the fans embrace taylor as one of our own. lt is our man, with the fans chanting his initials regularly towards the end of the third quarter. cromartie is on pace to have around 10 picks this season. rex ryan is the reason these guys have come to town and found new life. probably the best motivational head coach in the NFL. i get amped just watching the guy on espn.

  32. Footballs says: Sep 30, 2010 12:27 AM

While true, it sounds like he was joking around. A team will take any information that will give them an edge in defeating their next opponent. It would be crazy to think there wouldn’t be any discussion with the new player about his old team, regardless of their record.

  33. Bees Knees says: Sep 30, 2010 12:32 AM

@Burritto: your heart’s in the right place :-) (and I’m no Jest fan either)
Consider, if you will: you’re a head coach in the NFL, and you have an opportunity to sign IN DIVISION, IN SEASON, a number one NFL club’s STARTING SIGNAL CALLER – surely that situation don’t come around every year or ten, and surely that’s worth a roster spot for a special-teamer or #3 QB?
What’s the worst that can happen? *Your* #3 QB doesn’t clear waivers? (Hey, Kellen would probably be fine with that.)
Yeah, I’m no football player either, and (presumably) Edward’s salary would present salary-cap issues for, um, teams spending up to the cap (and why wouldn’t you, but that’s another/GM story…)
Just hafta wonder who the Jest would’ve axed to free up the cap space, huh?

  34. gypjet says: Sep 30, 2010 3:41 AM

Rex Ryan is using up his likability. He is to gimmicky and when he runs out of yuks, people will start to turn on him. When you are fat and loud, NFL athletes are already looking for a reason to not like you, so he better suck it up when they start losing. Sanchez is good one week, then he sucks, then he really sucks, then he is good again. To inconsistent. Jets are fading.

  35. JagMania65 says: Sep 30, 2010 7:13 AM

@ Bees Knees: Edwards’ salary wouldn’t present any team with any salary cap issues, since we’re playing in an UNCAPPED YEAR!
You’re no football player as you admit. But even casual fans know about the CBA issues…

  36. ejtowne says: Sep 30, 2010 7:43 AM

Rex Ryan looks like he is trying to copy a certain Patriots coach. Little does he know that he will never be as good as Billy at the cheating game.

  37. TomBrady'sHairStylist says: Sep 30, 2010 8:14 AM

hey come on now if the didnt bring in Edwards who do u expect to teach Mark Sanchez how to check the ball to the RB?

  38. Patsfan1776 says: Sep 30, 2010 8:22 AM

Did someone call the Pats defense incredible? Some players on the D said they were doing the bend but don’t break thing but it looked to me like they were doing the human speed bump thing last Sunday lying on their backs.
I miss the old days of playing on grass fields because you could tell the good defensive players because their uniforms were dirty on the front and the bad defensive players because their uniforms were dirty on their backside.

First off who is this “WE” are you a member of the Bills organization, no I thought not. Second, yes LAST year sanchez threw 6 picks, now he has none. LAST year Sanchez was a rookie and made rookie mistakes. Again while the Bills have been “In” each game this year till the end, they have lacked tha ability to close out a game.
Besides, if you feel I am a loudmouth Jets fan, you are incorrect. I have been watching this team for nearly 17 years now, and interned with them as a physical therapist a few years back. I know the Jets can look good and still fail. True Jets fans are rarely loudmouth this early in the season.

First of all, get your facts straight, the Bills have not been in every game this year, two of them, they were never, ever in the game against Green Bay………….2nd of all……..if you interned as a physical therapist for the Jets, why didn’t you work on Rex Ryan, starting from the twinkee wrappers on the ground to the top of his fat face? 3rd, with them (the Jets) are you a member of the Jets organization, no I thought not!!

  48. Stationphons says: Sep 30, 2010 12:19 PM

David Garrard and Trent Edwards had their chance to prove to Professional football that they can compete in the NFL and take their teams “Somewhere” but, all they’ve done was to let the organizations down and on the trading blocks.
    Let’s just start fresh
Jet’s supposable have Sanchise so what’s up with that for one game?

Why yes at the time I was part of the organization, and them is the proper use of the word when denoting a large group. I interned there during the Mangini era so I have no comment on Rex’s weight. Also I was trying to compliment a team that even while losing has at least showed heart and determination. Good job making fun of your own team. Now Im sorry but this back and forth must end as I am now on call at the clinic and can no longer waist my time with you.

  51. CKL says: Sep 30, 2010 3:43 PM

I don’t blame coaches fro bringing guys in to pick their brains. They all do it regardless of how lopsided a matchup may look. Any legal edge a team can get is worth pursuing. The teams are most likely looking for things like tips on audibles and hand signals though one would think a team would be smart enough to change those every week, you never know. They are simply looking for stuff a team can’t get from watching film. People can laugh all they want to about how bad the Bills “suck, LOL!!!!11!!!!!” but any given Sunday is the truth in the NFL.
