Vick wins NFC offensive player of the month

Eagles quarterback Mike Vick is back, and arguably better than ever.

And plenty of people are noticing.

Vick was named the NFC’s offensive player of the month for September 2010.  He took the field midway through a Week One game against the Packers after starter Kevin Kolb suffered a concussion.  Vick responded by completing 16 of 24 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown.

The next week, with Kolb still recovering, Vick completed 21 of 34 for 284 yards and two scores in a 35-32 win at Detroit.

He saved his best for last, with 291 passing yards and three touchdowns against the Jaguars in a 28-3 romp.  Vick also ran for a touchdown.

For the month, Vick generated a passer rating of 110.2.

Chicago fans could have a legitimate gripe on this one; Jay Cutler of the 3-0 Bears arguably outplayed Vick.

  1. This award is well-deserved. I’m one of Vick’s biggest detractors (not because of the dog killing, either). But if he continues to play like this, he’s going to shut all of us up.
I didn’t think he had it in him to put up three very good PASSING games.

  2. The makeover is almost complete. Now all he needs to do is assume an alias to make people forget about the whole dogfighting thing.
    I suggest Ron Mexico.

  3. Jeez, I guess fat ol’ Andy made the right choice after all.
Now, let’s count all the redundant dog torturing posts from those who have a little issue with moving on with their lives.

  4. Vick has taken his game to a new level. he deserves it. just dont go killing any more dogs and you’ll be okay “MV7”.
Actually, if you keep balling like its september Mike we will have to replace the “7” with a “P”.

  5. “Chicago fans could have a legitimate gripe on this one; Jay Cutler of the 3-0 Bears arguably outplayed Vick.”
Chicago fans have nothing to gripe about.. they’re 3-0 when they should be 2-1, maybe even 1-2 if Yackers showed up mentally in the 2nd half.
Of course they’ll be griping for real when they finish 7-9 and don’t make the playoffs. Say welcome to this years Bronco’s!!!

  6. No he hasn’t. Cutler only has 12 more total yards with an extra half a game. Vick has one more total touchdown. Vick has zero turnovers while Cutler has two interceptions and a lost fumble. Furthermore, Vick has a higher QB rating than Cutler. It’s close, but Vick is playing out of his mind right now, as Andy put it.

  7. “Chicago fans could have a legitimate gripe on this one; Jay Cutler of the 3-0 Bears arguably outplayed Vick.”

Opinion not necessary here Mike. Just report the award and move on.

  8. Yeah but 2 of the 3 games Cutler played they prob should have lost if NOT for the defense and the game officials. Plust Cutler has made some horrible throws that were wiped by penalites. Vicks team has won because of him..and mainly him. They might actually be 3-0 had he run in that touchdown and not tried to force that pass against GB. There are alot of reasons why the Bears are 3-0..there arnt many reasons besides Vicks play that the eagles are 2-1

  9. Gosh I remember earlier in the season when PFT was aksing why the Eagles still had Vick and why they paid him so much money when no one else would have.
Darn, I guess these teams might have a clue on how to do things with without PFT’s input.

  10. at this time vick and the eagles are loving life. bet there are a few other teams that wish they took a chance on him. what do you think buffaloosers?

  11. Detriot and Jacksonville,
    WOW, SO THE F??K WHAT.
The day Mike Vick is the answer is a dawg day in hell. oh wait a min…..
    Signed a SAINTS FAN.

  12. Vick is back and better than ever. Even if he ever loses a step in the next few years, he is still going to be a great pocket presence. No Way the Eagles let Vick walk. He will have a new contract by his 10th game of the season. 6 years 75 Million. You heard it here first. Kolb will be traded to the Fins, Cards, or Vikings by March and the Eagles Future is now in the hands of one Michael Vick.

  13. Chicago fans have no legitimate gripe, Florio.
Their defense is not eligible for Offensive Player of the Month, which is what won all three of their games for them, along with a nice return by Hester.
Cutler has yet to win a game for the Bears this season.
    Ask around.

  14. You mean Jay “I tried to throw the game-killing interception three times like I always do but the Packers just wouldn’t let it happen” Cutler? Please, the Packers beat themselves Monday night and Cutler got lucky. Plus, the Bears would have lost to the Lions if it weren’t for that idiotic rule.
    Cutler sucks.

  15. Before Vick became amazing..again. I used to read all these articles on Vick and how washed up he is and all the comments people would leave and everyone hating on him. I cant wait to see how many people are back on his Nuts!!

  16. Vick and the eagles beat the lions and the jags and that makes him great? They’ve never given away awards for that before…

  17. The Eagles are not letting Vick walk. They are the ones who gave him his second chance and they are the ones who had to endure all the public scrutiny. Now that he’s back on top and better than ever he will have a new contract by his 10th game of the season. NO WAY the Eagles let Vick walk to the Vikings, Cards, or Fins! Vick has the perfect offense in Philly and everything he needs to Win!!

  18. The venom associated with Vick knows no bounds, yet people like Ray Lewis, Donte Stallworth and Leonard Little see none. What about Vincent Jackson who has TWO DUI convictions? Braylon Edwards beat up a 130 lb guy at a bar, and then got busted for DUI.
Vick paid his debt to scoiety. He’s a football player now like all the rest.

And Aaron Rodgers outplayed them both…
    ________________
    Rodgers 759 yds, 5 TD’s, 3 INT’s, 93.3 rating
    Cutler 870 yards, 6 TD’s, 2 INT’s, 109.7 rating
In what world are you guys living in? Come on homers, be realistic. Besides, Rodgers has the last 2 Preseason MVP awards, he doesn’t need anymore hardware. Vick earned it, Cutler has a legit gripe, Rodgers isn’t even in the conversation.

  20. This is a lot of hype for a couple of games. The media just needs something to ride. Not hating here. Just an observation.

  21. If you want to compare Vick and Cutler, they both played the Lions. Compare those stats:
    Vick: 21-34, 284 yds, 2 TDs, 108.0 Rating, 8 rushes for 37 yards, 2 fumbles (none lost)
    Cutler: 23-35, 372 yds, 2 TDs, 1 INT, 108.3 Rating, 5 rushes for 22 yards, 1 fumble lost
That’s why there’s a legitimate gripe. They are both playing at a similarly high level.

  22. “The media just needs something to ride.”
Player of the Month is marketing straight from the NFL. Agree its flimsy, but should the media ignore it?

  23. Chiefs2010 says:
this Vick hype machine is getting old…
wait until he plays a good team

Tell me about it. He beat Detroit and Jacksonville – big freaking deal. The Vick apologists are going to get a rude awakening very soon… Likely starting with the Titans on 24th October. Based on the Eagles’ schedule, I wouldn’t be surprised if they lose all their remaining games from the 24th on… unless they manage to sweep the ‘Skins.
Vick wasn’t a great player before prison, and I can’t imagine why he would be afterwards. Calling for league MVP and Super Bowl appearances after beating the likes of Detroit and Jacksonville is just plain dumb, to put it frankly.

  24. phildo says:
Philly would be 3-0 if Vick had started all games.. Plus Cutler blows.. INT machine.. Vick has 0
Give me a break. Vick only managed to play as well as he did against the Pack because they didn’t game plan on him and because the Packers were playing a prevent defense from the beginning of the second half.

So (to use your logic), you are saying that it would be wrong to criticize Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge because they only killed 1.5 million people, while Hitler and Stalin killed 12 and 30 million, respectively?
    Wow.
It looks like we have a winner here, boys and girls! Somebody call MENSA!

  25. I bet chicago on mnf and every time Jay Cutler took one of his pattened 10 step drops i held my breath….
Worst play calling ive seen in awhile, way to go Mike Martz, apparently he never heard of running the ball

    _______________________________
Believe it or not, no Rodgers hasn’t. With about one half more of a game under his belt right now, Rodgers has thrown for a total of 9 more yards (759 to 750), 1 less Td (5 to 6), and 3 more Int (3 to 0). Rodgers has also rushed for 49 yards and 2 TDs, compared to Vick’s 170 rushing yards and 1 TD. So, Vick’s numbers are better straight up, and that’s with 2 fewer quarters of play. Whether you like Vick or not, he’s outplayed both Rodgers and Cutler so far. Still plenty of the season to go, but the award was just for this month anyway.

  27. I’m a Bears fan, if anyone has a gripe it would be Colts fans. Peyton has more yards, a higher rating and more TDs that Vick

  28. @ Ridge Runner
Do you even read the articles before spouting off? Vick was named NFC Offensive player of the Month. It’s not a SB prediction, and it’s not league MVP. Both of those things come at the end of the season. Vick played quite well against the Packers (outscored them when he took over, but too much of a deficit to come out with the win), and he ran roughshod all over the Lions and Jags defenses. Granted, the Lions and Jags don’t have the best defenses in the League, but Vick and Cutler have played two of the same teams at this point, and you can only play the teams on your schedule.
I’ve looked at the schedule, and other than the Colts, I don’t see a game there that isn’t a coin flip at worst. You can pretty much toss out the records for division games, so there’s really no telling how they’ll go. The 49ers are falling apart. The Titans are beatable. What exactly is it about this schedule that’s supposed to be so intimidating?

  29. STICKYDITKA, I could see why Cutler is being mentioned, but I think Vicks ZERO turnovers is what separates them so far. Its funny to me how some people are saying that he is only playing well vs garbage teams. If thats the case, then we should be seeing EVERY SINGLE QB pass for 3 TDs and run for another. All while committing 0 turnovers. And this is just strictly my opinion(and Vicks too) that the Eagles would have won that matchup vs GB if he had played all 4 quarters. Who knows?? Maybe we’ll get another shot at GB come January?

    Post of the day!
Yes, Vick is playing the best ball of his life, far better than most of us ever expected.
That doesn’t make him any less detestable as a human being.

  31. Ron Mexico did the same thing with the Arthur Blanks…6-10 this year. He killed and tortured dogs. How anyone can root for him is beyond me.

  32. Oh yay! One more thing to thank Tony Dungy for.
    Thank you, Tony!!
    Erm. Hmmm.
Should I follow that statement with Amen??

I agree completely. It seems like every month of his career, Peyton is getting robbed out of NFC offensive player of the month.
    Come on, dude. Read.

  34. …the man did his time (unlike many out there and in the league) – he made the right decisions (minus the birthday party) and deserves all the success he gets – i hope nothing but continued success and that all you haters get to squirm for the entire time…

  35. I’m a huge Eagle fan. I love my two black labs. That said, he has played very well the last three weeks. I still wish we had McNabb. Does he deserve the award. Yes.

    I second that!!!

  37. ` why does everyone hate vick ?
he did his time & thats over & done with .
hate him as a person if you want bhut dont hate on how good he is on the field .
    im all for vick (:

  38. Vick torched the Packers who have a great defense. Vick has put up 80 points in 10 quaters with zero turnovers. There will be bumps as the season progresses but the Eagle will win at least 10 games. Vick is doing the right things both on and off the field. The man has served his time and as lond as he continues to do the right things I will support him.

  39. Vick torched the Packers prevent D.
    Played two bad teams.
Cutler played the real Packers D.
Vick faces a real test after Wash. I’ll be happy to rub all of his buddies noses in dog shit when he fails.
Feel free to say you’re 6’4 260 MMA fighter. I can rub your nose at gunpoint.

He did his time for “Conspiracy to Travel in Interstate Commerce in Aid of Unlawful Activities and to Sponsor a Dog in an Animal Fighting Venture”.
He never did any time for killing dogs, and his 3 year prison sentence on the state charges was suspended on condition of good behavior.
In my opinion, he got off pretty light.

No, there is one reason the Bears are 3-0. They won those games. All that woulda shoulda coulda doesn’t mean anything. Bottom line, they couldn’t.
Vick does deserve it over Cutler though. He’s a beast!

  45. Let’s just set the record straight…
Vick: 6 TD to 0 INT 250 YDS/G (extrapolated to 300 for only playing half in GB) Average 8.4 yards and a 110.2 rating
    Cutler: 6-2 and 290 YDS/G Average of 9.6 yards and a 109.7 rating
    Rodgers: 5-3 & 253 YDS/G Average 7.2 and 93.3 rating.
    Peyton: 9-0 337 YDS/G Average 8.0 rating 116.9.
BUT PEYTON MANNIGN PLAYS IN THE AFC
    Cutler has not outplayed Vick.
Clearly, Rodgers has not outplayed both.
Put in context, all these teams except the BEARS have 2 wins, which I’m sure is why Florio thinks Cutler deserves MVP.
But like many have stated here Vick is more responsible for his team’s success, whereas Jay shares in credit.
Furthermore, Florio, since when do you speak up for the Bears? We are happy enough to be 3-0, let alone beat the Pack on MNF, we don’t need awards handed out to our players our sympathy from the media.
Cutler will continue to improve. Defense will continue to dominate. Bears continue to win, with a very good chance to be 8-0 when the Vikings come to town(at 2-6? 3-5?). I know that hurts.

  46. Steve W. says:
Granted, the Lions and Jags don’t have the best defenses in the League, but Vick and Cutler have played two of the same teams at this point, and you can only play the teams on your schedule.
Exactly. So let’s look at how Vick and Cutler both did against said teams:
    Vs. The Lions:
    Vick: 21-34, 284 yds, 2 TDs, 108.0 Rating, 8 rushes for 37 yards, 2 fumbles (none lost)
    Cutler: 23-35, 372 yds, 2 TDs, 1 INT, 108.3 Rating, 5 rushes for 22 yards, 1 fumble lost
    Vs. The Packers
Vick filled in for Kolb at the second half and faced a prevent defense that maintained the lead to ensure the win. Cutler played a lights out defense in a division game and managed to win. If you think that Vick would have done even half as good as he did against the Packers had he been listed as the starter and the Pack had a chance to game plan for him, I have some ocean front property in Kansas you may be interested in.
Cutler has a legitimate gripe for Vick “winning” the OPM award. Getting inflated ratings by playing against bottom-barrel defences does not a superstar make.
As for the Eagles schedule, lets see how they do against teams that aren’t in the league’s bottom tier. They face the Titans, Texans, Bears, Colts, Vikings and then their division rivals (twice). I don’t think the NFC East is a tough as it once was, but then again I don’t think the Eagles are much of a contender, either.
    Tony B says:
I want to get all you idiots in a room and make it rain knuckles on you
Another internet princess makes threats that he will never actually be called upon to carry out. No surprise there. I do wonder one thing, however. Does Tony B picture himself wearing his favourite Superman underoos when he plays out this little fantasy in his head?

  47. Cutler “should” have had four INT’s Monday? Give me a freaking break. If it doesnt count as an INT, it isnt an INT. He threw one fake INT because of a vicious helmet to helmet and one due to Earl Bennett getting sexually assaulted on a deep pass.
“Almost INT’s” are not a stat, and if it was then Aaron Rodgers had three Monday as well. That’s loser talk.
And if Cutler wasn’t responsible for two of their wins, then it must have been someone else leading them to TWO game-winning drives in the last two minutes of the 4th quarter.

  48. Total jerk off Rodgers has outplayed them both. Those of you commenting that Cutler tried to throw the game away 3 times are either stupid, have an agenda or both. You have got to watch the game. When a DB cheats by holding the receiver so he can’t get to the ball it is not the QB’s fault. When a guy gets crushed in the head while throwing the ball its not his fault. Look, Cutler has been a baby, but he is playing well this year even if your team lost. Get over it. I hate Vick because of his lack of a human conscience but he played great and earned the award, doggone it.
