Clay Matthews' sacks NFC defensive player of the month award

It’s fitting, we suppose, that Packers linebacker Clay Matthews was named the NFC’s defensive player of the month.  After all, it was Matthews’ successful planting of Kevin Kolb’s face into the Lincoln Financial Field turf that opened the door for the NFC offensive player of the month, Eagles quarterback Mike Vick, to take the field and take Kolb’s job.

Matthews racked up six sacks in two games.  He was the first player in Packers history to register at least three sacks in consecutive outings.

It’s the first time any Packer linebacker has won the award since Na’il Diggs, way back in December 2002.

His sack is the Defensive Player of the Month? Funny, I don’t remember them being on the field. I mean, you think you would notice someones testicles on a football field. And if you do notice them, rest assured Sean Smith is neabry……

    ragnar,
Didn’t watch the game did you? If you had you would have seen him getting double teamed half the night and still getting 6 pressures on Cutler. You’d also see him setting the edge and playing the run like a maniac.
    Well deserved by Matthews.

Yeah, I guess in terms of sacks they did shut Clay out didn’t they? Too bad they couldn’t stop a guy with a basketball for a hand, a corner, or a rookie free-agent linebacker.
Also, Julius Peppers has 1 sack which is tied for 45th in the NFL.
Also, he is the highest paid defensive player ever.
    Carry on.

You simply cannot put on nearly 80 pounds of weight like that.
It’s just a matter of time before he gets caught ladies.
As for the Williams wall? Yeah, Fat Pat and KWill sure look like poster boys for roids.

Before everyone gets all over his case for getting the facts right maybe you should figure out that Charles Woodson and Bigby aren’t LINEBACKERS.

    Listen young linebackers,here is the recipe to Clay’s success……400 mg Deca/week, 30 mg Dianabol/day, and 500 mg of Sustanon/week.
Glad I could be of service to you….

  27. Mendeleev says: Sep 30, 2010 1:49 PM

No one here has reading comprehension. The line says “Packer linebacker”. Woodson and Bigby aren’t linebackers.

  28. ChicagoJo says: Sep 30, 2010 1:49 PM

They doubleteamed Peppers all game too, didn’t seem to stop him. Peppers also, coincidentally, didn’t try to break anyone’s neck with obvious penalties in the game.
I mean sacks aren’t everything, and I’m not suggesting he wasn’t a large factor, but there were at least half a dozen players who made key game changing plays that helped their team win Sunday. That said, I also recognize that the award is mostly for his performance in the first two games (against the Eagles and Bills).
Maybe they should’ve given Clay defensive player of the first two weeks who you still kind of noticed in week 3 and who hasn’t had to play against a real offensive line yet.

  29. 4 Just Wants To Play says: Sep 30, 2010 1:51 PM

Umm, didn’t Charles Woodson win the award twice last year?
    ————–
HEY jrarick…they said first Packers LINEBACKER since Diggs. Woodson is a cornerback…right? Ya…read a little slower next time.

  30. mac says: Sep 30, 2010 1:51 PM

ZOD and jrarick, apparently reading optional before commenting. Writer said Mathews first Packer LB since Diggs to win award. While Woodson was all over the field last year I don’t recall him lining up at LB.

  31. mawkus says: Sep 30, 2010 1:52 PM

Yo guys, read the article again… Clay is the first packers LINEBACKER to win the award since ’02. Diggs was also a linebacker for the packers back then. Woodson and Bigby are defensive backs.

  32. Bushy says: Sep 30, 2010 1:56 PM

To those of you who “corrected” the article by the mention of Woodson – doesn’t he play Cornerback? The article says ” Packer **linebacker** “.

Some people are just gifted,. I haven’t heard the NFL plan on suspending him just, because hes played awesome for the most of last season and started strong this one.
I was wondering about the arm by the neck thing I noticed that as well a few times and I thought that would constitute as holding, but it didn’t, the zebras didn’t call it.
The Packers only rushed 3 alot Monday or it seemed that way. I thought they should have brought a little more heat, or a few less penalties on Monday.

“It’s the first time any Packer has won the award since linebacker Na’il Diggs, way back in December 2002.”

Classic. I’ve watched literally every play of the Viqueens this year and can count on one hand how many times Allen has been doubled this year. Getting a chip every 4th or 5th play on occasion by a RB or FB doesn’t essentially count as a double team. And even if he was….what the hell are the rest of your Star(caps)s doing…? Taking plays off?
Peppers will prove to be the biggest bust by the Bears in alot of years. So far, he’s had a handful of tackles for a loss….1 sack, and he knocked a Detroit QB out for a few games.

I’ll be the first to say that Thompson had a rare hit amongst the long line of misses when he got Clay, the kid’s a beast. But Hawk, as a top 5 pick taken ahead of guys like Vernon Davis, Cromartie, Ngata, D Williams (all positions of need at the time), who can’t even get on the field in the season opener, that’s a bust. That’s great he had 89 tackles (you’re right, had no idea he had more than all but one Vike), but he SHOULD have a load of tackles in a 3-4. He also had 1 sack, not good for a guy who’s supposed to get after the QB.
He can’t cover anyone, can’t get to the QB, and is made to look foolish in space. No, there’s good reason he didn’t see the field Week 1, it’s because he’s just not good enough. Bust.

Clay definitely uses roids….and has never been tested, even though he was “rumored” to before the combine(which is the source for the trolls), and when teammate(and also rumored before the combine) Cushing gets busted, Clay still has yet to be tested, outstanding.
Ya know, there are people out there that bust their asses to be what they want to be. Which is why Clay is in the NFL, and you are all posting in blogs hating people.

  60. DSC says: Sep 30, 2010 7:22 PM

We’ll have to agree to disagree on this I guess Majik, a lot of those players you named could have helped except thank god we didn’t take Davis. We just got rid of one drama queen and don’t need another, not to mention we have Finley who is a Top 2 TE in the league no question. Back to the bust yes, people thought he would be what Clay has become, obviously that hasn’t happened, but he is very solid, and to call him a bust then you can call half the players of the first round every year a bust, wasn’t like he was the next coming of Dick Butkus….but a very solid player who i think will do well when he leaves….Chillar just fits in better to our 3-4 scheme with mathews blitzing nearly everyplay.
His man job is to stop the run, he isn’t in there most downs they blitz cause Chillar is definately better against the pass and Hawk is slower than a lot of TEs….most LBs are…..why not play a better option if you have the depth at LB in Chillar…..but say he looks foolish in space is a stretch again…but i am impressed with the manner in which you made your argument. I dont quite get your point Rodgers Int. Grounding play being catastrophic…..Jones caught the ball and we were driving, he holds on to the ball and no one mentions the grounding call…..agree to disagree on this one too i guess….

  62. Majik Bullet says: Sep 30, 2010 8:30 PM

Fair enough DSC, but I can’t let that Finley top 2 Tight end thing slide. No way he’s top 2, those spots belong to Dallas Clark and Antonio Gates. Look at the production, it’s not even debatable, not yet. I struggle to even put him in the next tier with guys like Davis and Gonz, just based on the small spectrum of what he has accomplished. I know, he came on strong at the end of last season, but he has had injury problems, and up until Monday night, he had been held pretty well in check (8 catches in 2 games). He needs to be more consistent before he’s considered a top TE, but I see no reason that doesn’t happen.
As for Hawk and other first rounders, you have a point, but if a healthy top 5 pick in his 5th season doesn’t play a down of defense in the season opener, he’s obviously not even close to meeting expectations. He would be considered solid if he was a 2nd day pick, but as a top 5 guy, he’s a bust.
ARod’s grounding penalty, it was a bonehead play that put them in a hole. You need your “MVP candidate” QB to lead you down the field without making bonehead mistakes in crunch time, instead of putting you in a 2nd and 20 hole. While the fumble is in no way Rodgers’ fault, maybe Jones safely goes out instead of fighting for more yards and eventually coughing it up on a 2nd and 10 play instead of 2nd and 20. 100% speculation, I know, but a very realistic scenario.

Jay Cutler the real offensive player of the month said “Who.”

Since Matthews sacked him in week 13 last year, I imagine he knows who he is. Also, as one of the two best players he faced Monday night, it’s an indictment of Cutler if you really think he has no idea who Matthews is.
    Idiot.

Once again agree to disagree…..but i could get used to you posting like this vs your typical way of doing things. Made some good points on finley, still not buying your hawk view but thats okay……Jones messed up, we have all those mental errors but still probably win the game if he secures the ball…..bonehead play indeed.

Fabio is more full of steroids and growth hormones than a McDonalds Quarterpounder. The fact that Packer homers go to such extreme lengths to justify his pronounced brow, manic eye gaze and various other steroid indicators is proof there is nothing to life in Wisconsin unless the Packers are involved.
Sad, really sad! ACR2 is angry and defensive and ready to sacrifice his intelligence (DSC has neither) and dignity for what? A pathetic football team? Pitiful, really pitiful, even Arnold, Stallone and Bob Role are laughing and thankful to not live in Wisconsin!
What a bunch of pathetic homers!

    @Dial
I just don’t think its fair to say completely false things about a person without proof. He never tested positve. If he does, then I will cross that bridge when I get there.

Pack are done ….3rd in the North

  71. shaggytoodle says: Oct 2, 2010 5:45 PM

Actually Pervy, Pack are in 2nd Minn. is 3rd. Maybe if you would ever READ something on football you would learn something, instead of just spewing the foolishness you chose to.

    Well said Shaggy…
Pevy……The Vikings are currently 3rd in the North…..they won only one game against the Lions at home with their 2nd string QB and their RB for only the first half….better check the standings!
