Jaws takes issue with criticism of Brandon Marshall

Maybe ESPN’s Ron Jaworski has been hanging out too much with Jon Gruden.

At an ESPN “Chalk Talk” session in advance of Monday night’s game between the Patriots and the Dolphins, Jaws addresses the criticism levied last week against Miami wideout Brandon Marshall, whom Mike Mayock, Solomon Wilcots, and Sterling Sharpe of NFL Network characterized as being tired in the final moments of the 31-23 loss.  (The video and explanation from NFLN makes a compelling case.)

Per Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald, Jaworski called the assessment “bullsh-t.”

We hope Jaws doesn’t use that same term on the air tonight.  Then again, maybe we hope he does.

    I saw the episode.
For the most part I respect Jaws and what he brings to the table. Its hard to believe he saw what I saw and said that.
When push came to shove in that game, and the Dolphins were looking to Marshall, he just jogged downfield. Nothing faster or harder than a jog. Plain and simple.

Wow, after reading this, I wish I had the last 15 seconds of my life back.
Florio, this isn’t a story. 99% of us could care less about what Ron Jaworski says.

He wasn’t tired he is just lazy. Another WR who doesn’t work unless the play is coming his way.

  4. ZombieRevolution says: Oct 4, 2010 1:16 PM

This story has little value to the NFL world (much like PFT hammering Tiki Barber on his marriage problems).
You have to think this is Florio trying to get some “ESPN on ESPN” crime, stiring that pot to see if something floats to the surface.

Jaworski is a game analyst, for ESPN no less. Game analyst are typically restrained in criticizing players beyond belief. Criticizing a player limits the network’s access to said player. ESPN tries to outdo everybody else in player access. Anything he says has zero credibility. He was one of the best out there before he started doing game broadcasts.

The only thing out of shape on Brandon Marshall is his jaw and its because of overuse.

  8. habibfromnewdehli says: Oct 4, 2010 1:25 PM

A broken clock is right twice a day.
And Jaws is actually right in this instance.
Brandon Marshall was running his routes. He didn’t “give up” until the ball was thrown(or mis-thrown) to the opposite side of the field.
He wasn’t giving any plays away.
And the Dolphins have no excuse for not going to him when the game was on the line. Henne didn’t even look to Marshall’s side of the field on many of the plays in that last drive.
All of this should, AND BETTER, change tonight against the Patriots. Their defense is horri… wait, they don’t even have a defense.

Jaws got it right……. and oh, BTW is there a better way to generate an audience then a little bit of controversy.

  11. FinFan68 says: Oct 4, 2010 1:37 PM

They said he was tired and someone said he was out of shape and someone else said he was basically doggin’ it. On the first count, they appear to be correct. He looked tired and had a monster game against one of the more physical (coverage, not tackling) corners in the league. That said, I would like to have seen him come off the line a little faster on the last few plays; and I want Henne to throw to him when the game is on the line–unless someone else is wide open. A jump ball to a tired brandon marshall is still a better option than a chest high pass over the middle to a triple covered anthony fasano. Henne has a nasty habit of deciding who will get the ball before they break the huddle…and he locks on from pre-snap until he throws the ball. It’s possible that marshall didn’t run hard at the end because of that fact and he was tired. Regardless, Marshall needs to be the first option and henne needs to SCAN THE DAMN FIELD

  13. Fidelito says: Oct 4, 2010 1:39 PM

How is it that you keep pushing Sharpe’s silly theory without mentioning the big stats Marshall put up that game? If he was that “tired” every game for the rest of the season it would be one of the greatest receiving seasons in NFL history.

JetGreeen, you sound a lot like the Jet fans of last year after starting 3-0. What happened after that? You fell apart and by the grace of God were gifted a ride to the playoffs. I won’t take anything away from what the Jets did while in the Playoffs but let’s be realistic. Oh wait, we’re talking about Jets fans.
Congrats on winning the September Super Bowl 2 times running.

  25. Dolphinatic13 says: Oct 4, 2010 2:01 PM

What’s the matter? Nothing to talk about on any of the Jets sites? By the way, The other “LT” will hurt himself and or run out of gas before the season is over and then your stuck with the 1.2 yds per carry juggernaut that is S. Green. Oh, and Rex Ryan is still Huuuuuge!

  26. KnuckleBucket says: Oct 4, 2010 2:05 PM

Well then maybe before tonights game Jaws can give Marshall a back rub while Gruden is blowing him and referriing to him as “that guy”….

  27. olskool711 says: Oct 4, 2010 2:05 PM

The film showed they were looking to Marshall. It was very clear. I’m not a Marshall hater. The guy was jogging during the last series of the game, with the game on the line, and his team looking to him.
You can’t change that. You can’t change what the film clearly showed. Whether he was tired, out of shape, dogging it, in need of his daily attitude binge, or what else doesn’t make that big a difference to me. Jaws is dead wrong on this one.

@hnirobert: I hate the Jets at least as much as you do but you need to face up to the fact that the Jets have put together a decent team of skilled players. Hopefully they fall short of their goals but I wouldnt talk too much crap about them unless you like the taste of crow.

  30. treeman says: Oct 4, 2010 2:11 PM

What the playbook guys did is interpret what they saw on film. That’s what they do. Maybe they’re right, maybe they’re wrong, but they are just doing what they do. And a little controversy can get a Nielsen point or two I suppose. Jaws is doing what he does, and now that he’s a in the booth, it’s a little different than when he was stuck on third string with Merrill Hoge. Big deal.
The guys I really get a kick out of are the ones that attack Florio for doing what he does. This post is typical Florio, grabbing a bit off the mainstream sports press, and running it, sticking in his own two cents with a half pennies worth of smart ass mixed in. Same as he always does.
So I ask you. Why are you here? Knowing what this site is about, why are you here and commenting to boot? Are you too stupid to pick up on what this site is about, or do you have your man period and just feel like bitching?
Either way, guys like mcgrath and zombie are what makes Florio look like such a smart guy, and he’s laughing at you all the way to 30 Rock.

If you don’t care what Jaworski says then why click on a link that says “Jaws takes issue with criticism of Brandon Marshall”??
And if you are really worried about the 15 seconds that you lost then why type a response to it thereby losing another 15 seconds of your life?
And one more thing…It’s “couldn’t care less” not “could care less”

  37. dlmcc0909 says: Oct 4, 2010 3:04 PM

Why do I constantly see people bash Florio for a story like this? Its a RUMOR MILL. this is what he does, he takes a topic and he puts his opinion into it. The fact that the guys on the NFL Network said what they did, and that Jaworski thinks differently is a topic for debate. the idea is for those of us who watched the game to give their opinion on who is right or wrong on the issue.
The fact that people write dumb things like “i just wasted 15 seconds reading this” is annoying, because you then just wasted more time than that by logging in and commenting.
If you dont like the site or the people running it, why read it? Nowdays there is no shortage of web sites you can read. Bashing the guy for writing the types of stories that got him picked up by NBC is just dumb.

“The film showed they were looking to Marshall. It was very clear.”
Huh? The first of the 4 plays yes, but the final three you will never see Henne turn his head to the left side of the field, never mind target Marshall.
Of course, I just went to view the video again and strangely it has been pulled. Hmmm, why would they pull the Marshall segment but leave the Playbook segment on Sanchez from the same game on the site? And there are numerous Playbook segments going back to week one. Never seen a single NFL network segment get pulled from the NFL’s own site. Hmmm, are they doubting themselves and actually realizing the video shows Henne looking away from Marshall for three straight plays and that Jaws is going to show that?

I just know this: talking about winning the Super Bowl in August is s goal but rarely spoken successfully in public. Rex has a larger pedigree than accomplishments but he’s simply not able to muzzle himself. Entitlement? “Son-of-the-boss” syndrome? I don’t care; I don’t like it. No one besides desperate Jet fans like it. But that’s why we hate the stinking Jets THIS YEAR. Other years different reasons but all that August/September bravado b.s. is so amateurish.
Oh, and by the way…LT looks great. It’s the beginning of Oct. He gets dinged and Thomas Jones will be a name you’ll remember.

B Marshall is a great player. He had a heck of a game. Was he tired at the end of the game…who wouldn’t be after that big game. I mean he just caught and ran that long play before those 4.
How come no one is talking about the pass that sailed over his head. I mean you can sit there and say he dogged the fade route but you can just as easily say Henne put too much on it.
2nd-4th down he didn’t even look at Marshall. If I’m Henne, I don’t care if Marshall is spitting blood, I’m looking to him to win me the game, NOT Fasano..lol

oldskool, you not only have a vision problem, you have a reading problem. I said he NEVER looked at him. All 3 plays after the first were designed to go AWAY from him. Not a single one of those plays after 1st down were designed to go his way.

Hasn’t anyone ever noticed that everytime a Brett Favre led team is on monday night football, Jaws is too busy gurgling Brett’s balls to even offer any real analysis!! So he didn’t join in the critisism of Brandon Marshall, who cares??
