NFL fines Chuck Cecil $40,000 for middle finger

Titans defensive coordinator Chuck Cecil’s decision to flip the bird at the officials on Sunday will cost him.

Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean reports that the NFL has fined Cecil $40,000 for the gesture, which was caught by the TV cameras.

Cecil was reacting to a roughing the passer penalty on the Titans. Cecil’s boss, Titans head coach Jeff Fisher, said that he, too, thought it was a bad call.

The fine easily could have been more than $40,000; Titans owner Bud Adams was fined $250,000 last year for giving the finger to Bills fans. Cecil has previously been fined $20,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct toward the officials in a game in December.

$40,000 for flipping a bird, but only $10,000 for grabbing another player’s junk? I don’t understand the formula here…

  7. RUGGERLAD says: Oct 4, 2010 4:33 PM

So grabbing another players junk is less expensive than flipping the bird to an official? What if you grabbed an officials junk? This is wrong!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. JMoney says: Oct 4, 2010 4:34 PM

Man Florio your blood ought to be boiling. You told those officials that the fine should be 6 digits last night and they just pretty much gave you the middle finger. Awesome!!!!

  9. funi says: Oct 4, 2010 4:36 PM

I thought it was going to be a 6 figure fine!

  10. Citizen Strange says: Oct 4, 2010 4:39 PM

The minute you start letting players intimidate officials all is lost.
You give the FINGER to an official during a game? s/b at least a one game suspension so it hurts your wallet and the team.
A BIG part of playing sports is self-control. EVERYBODY can control themselves if they want to. They just don’t want to.
Think of it this way. Cecil can’t control himself and he gives the finger to an official. But what if he were in Iraq and there were five masked gunmen standing there pointing loaded machine guns at him? Do you think he would be able to control himself then?
Saying you can’t control yourself is domestic violence abuse BS. EVERYBODY can control themselves.

I went ahead and derived it. 8 testicles equals one finger.

how the hell can somebody be fined more for showing the middle finger to some fan at a non-NFL event in the offseason than for showing it to the ref during a game ?

I remember when Favre gave one of the Vikings the double bird after the game, and Favre was chased into the tunnel! I don’t know? I thought it was funny?!
I don’t remember who he gave the double bird too either? It was one of the bigger named defensive guys at time.
It wasn’t caught on camera, but it was brought up in local media.

Did Cecil respond by spearing Goodell?
On Sept. 20, Bill Polian, the NFL’s vice-president for football development, announced that Cecil was being fined $30,000, one of the largest nonsuspension fines ever imposed on a player, for “two acts of flagrant unnecessary roughness involving the use of his helmet.”

last time i checked this is football. take your panties off and man up..nothing dirty about playing hard d and to the whistle. i think most of you punks would love to have a defense that hit the offense until they mentally and physically check out. fact is we are last of a dying breed. as much as i hate the steelers and ravens all three of us impose our will on other teams (and on each other) i think most of you girls are more upset about your team not wanting it more

The fine is more than fair. Florio your six-figure prediction was a little too high. Bud Adams is a billionaire owner. Cecil probably makes around a million a year. 10% of a season’s pay for flipping the bird would have been a little harsh.

@ tenakeytyrant9: “i think most of you punks would love to have a defense that hit the offense until they mentally and physically check out.”
really? ’cause the titams didn’t make the Broncos check out. last i checked, the Broncos punched it in to win the game and knock out your pussy-ass, cheap-shot defense.

  31. CapsLockKey says: Oct 4, 2010 6:19 PM

Obivously prorated based on salary. If they gave him a $250,000 fine like Adams, that would probably be most of his salary. Assistant coaches don’t exactly make the kind of money that players do.

Don’t you guys have more fines than wins this year???

  33. NFLJunkie says: Oct 4, 2010 6:55 PM

Maybe the league looked at the call Cecil was objecting to and realized he had a point, so they fined him less than Ryan.
