Dolphins special teams coach loses his job

Monday night’s special teams meltdown in Miami cost special teams coach John Bonamego his job.

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano announced the team has “moved on” from Bonamego as of Tuesday morning.  Assistant Special Teams coach Darren Rizzi, who had no prior NFL experience before joining Miami in 2009, will take over.

Bonamego was the team’s special teams coordinator since 2008.  Monday night’s game wasn’t the first time he’s taken heat.

“This was a tough decision,” Sparano said. “I thank Bono for all he’s done. Players need to take responsibility too.”

Geez, how thick is the line between being a good special teams coach and a bad one?

  4. PFTiswhatitis says: Oct 5, 2010 11:56 AM

Probably needed to be done. They allowed a blocked kick last week and apparently it had to do with his scheme, which the Pats sniffed out. He seemed to have no idea what was wrong or just didn’t correct it.

    Why??

  7. Louie says: Oct 5, 2010 11:58 AM

Tough decision???!!! Hell, that was a no-brainer. That was the most pitiful display of special teams I’ve ever seen in a single game (half!).

    Wow, that didn’t take long.

Next should be Henning, the O-Coordinator. No more ricky williams splitting carries with Ronnie. Ronnie needs 25 solid carries and to wear opposing defenses down.
Oh and did we sign Brandon Marhsall? I haven’t been able to tell, other than the Jets game.
Hennings conserative play calling is absolute crap. If you want your QB to throw 3yd, 4yd passes put Chad Pennington in.
    Awful.

    Scapegoat!
They should Fire Chad Henne too, he blows!

Oh really? How many players did you fire? That’s what I thought.

  14. Empire Jones says: Oct 5, 2010 12:06 PM

Firing a ST coach only makes sense if you’re going to fire a player or two also to set a precident.
Othewise you’re just putting a band aid on the issue.
There are only so many schemes and coverage options on ST. Just like the Chargers found out, it is very rarely on the ST coach but usually the players.

Sporano’s got an eye conditions where he needs to wear the sunglasses. As much as I’d like to hope that he thinks he’s that cool, its for medical reasons.

    Woe is Mets:
Well, you can look back to just one week ago when he took heat for a blocked punt by the Jets, which was foreshadowed by the fact that the team had terrible punt blocking during the preseason and he apparently did nothing to correct it.
    He was a bad coach.

  24. BRUTUS9448 says: Oct 5, 2010 12:29 PM

the difference between sanchez and henne is that one has a young OC that call plays that help his young QB the other is a dinasauar that still thinks its 1952.
3rd and 6 from the pats 40 and wildcat call? Henning should be fire also. like today

Dolphins have had, what, five punts blocked, two blocked field goals, and 10 monster kickoff returns since the preseason? Is that enough example for you? Something is seriously wrong with Miami’s special teams all around.

  29. william sizemore says: Oct 5, 2010 12:36 PM

The loss is not on the special team coach, it’s on the head coach, he kept him when the writing was on the wall for a long time, the QB has a way to go to be that guy we can count on, if he was cut he would have at least 25 teams trying to get him, give him a break, he will get better, remember when Tampa had a QB who was not what they expected, yeah! went to SF, from there to the Hall of Fame. We will now see what this team is made of in the next 2 games. Bill

  30. mwcarolina says: Oct 5, 2010 12:43 PM

    (“Sanchez>Henne– not even close.”)
actually it is close, Henne doesnt have a stud tight end like Keller or two recievers like Sanchez has, they are close, Henne didnt lose the game vs. the Patroits, the special teams did, anyone who seen that game would tell you that. Henne was in a good shootout with the Jets and was beating the Jets great defense, however, Sanchez did the same to Miami’s defense. Henne should start all year, he’s not the problem.

  31. BP says: Oct 5, 2010 12:46 PM

Time to boot the booter Tony. The buck stops there.
Oh yeah, Brady’s 107 passer rating for the game shows he is washed up. And his 109 is second overall. There are 28 teams or so that wish their QB was so washed up.

  32. miamijakesnakes says: Oct 5, 2010 12:48 PM

I just wrote Jeff Ireland, Sun Life, Tony Sporano, and even Heizinga to ask for my money back from last night. I have never been to a worse football game. I let them know I am not some fairweather fan who jumped on because we signed Brandon Marshall (or did we sign him? cause you couldnt tell last night). I told them I was born in aqua and orange placenta and deserve more than paying 100 dollars on tickets and stale food to watch the garbage that is the Miami Dolphins last night.

@BRUTUS9448 its really not about playcalling, its about execution. jets had a 3rd and 10 and called a wildcat play and Brad Smith picked up 15 yards.

  36. SoFlor Steeler says: Oct 5, 2010 1:07 PM

Wow – I live in South Florida and am a semi Dolphin fan – but they can never win with Henne – he does not see the defense and throws one or two inexcusable INTs per game…
And they do have a decent tight end – just don’t use him much…

lmfao thats histerical…. and the comment of brady washed up.. WOW dumbest comment of the day.. other than manning or brees hes the best out there but dont worry henne is the future with his great ball placement … i can’t believe gruden said he can make all the throws… yea i guess if there all to the other team

Shouldn’t the Head Coach oversee that and make suggestions? And the players should play better as well. Last night was not about poor schemes, it was about poor execution. Plain and Simple! Dolphins needed a fall guy. I get that. But more blame needs to fall on the players. And considering the Dolphins as a team played poorly (3 Int’s, Defense giving up big plays, special teams mishaps), I can’t justify cutting the guy loose after this game.

  42. thirdandgoal says: Oct 5, 2010 2:17 PM

  43. aligreene says: Oct 5, 2010 2:26 PM

plain ridiculous,he draws up the scheme and the players cant execute it,so fire the coach how about bring up some hungry kids on the practice squad, and demote players

  44. Phil says: Oct 5, 2010 2:30 PM

I couldn’t agree more with ‘miamijakesnakes’. I’ve been a Dolphins fan for 40yrs and all of us deserve better than this coaching staff and quarterback.
As over-the-top and cartoonish as Rex Ryan is, I’d almost rather have him as our coach at this point. I hate the Jets & Pats and to lose to both at home the way we did is inexcusable.

  45. JoeSixPack says: Oct 5, 2010 2:42 PM

No question Belichick saw some tendencies on the Fins special teams which he took advantage of – but there’s far too little credit being given to the Patriots execution – and the lack of the Dolphins execution on special teams too.
Now that the coach is gone, focus on the players and their poor special teams play.
Their OC should be on the hot seat too – play action when you’re down 41 to 14? Perhaps a deep pass here and there at that point?
But ultimately you could have the best coach and if the players don’t execute, it doesn’t matter – the Fins have problems with both the players and coaches.

that his eyes they are stuck on me.
To all the backs out there

Jump that route, we don’t care
lets leave the receiver standing there, If only the throw had a little more air
Some touch or arc, I don’t care.

I somewhat agree, but going into the game, the Miami’s wildcat has been averaging 2 yards per attempt. You do the math.
The offensive coordinater needs to step up his game or he’ll be gone as well.

  48. miamijakesnakes says: Oct 5, 2010 3:18 PM

    Wildcat – RIP.
It’s a gimmick at best, it worked when the Dolphins had no personel but with Henne, Marshall, and Brown there is truly no place in the playbook for it.

  49. drbob1117 says: Oct 5, 2010 5:34 PM

After last night , I definitely thought Bonamego was in trouble, but their offensive coaches are just as bad. They have four decent plays in the whole playbook, and two of them are out of the Wildcat. Almost makes me happy to have marty Mornhinweg as my team’s OC. Almost…

  50. dieharddolfan6493 says: Oct 5, 2010 7:45 PM

you can blame the players all you want but it always comes down to how the coaches condition them. no player it naturally bad. for example last season the D was insulting add mike nolen the dolphins only allowed 13 pts on monday(minus the problems cuased by offence and the ST) and you cant say the defence wasnt good but still struggled. but this man has poorly conditioned the ST that is main reason for the monday night insult. Brady hardly had to buckle his chin strap. henne is a stud but needs to work on his pocket awarness and decision making, ST needs to work on….everything. this team has a long way to go. 8-8 9-7 at most
