LOL @ Coach Stram and yeah, you just get the feeling any success the Colts had last year was a) Manning b) hangover from the Dungy era.
Feels alot like Johnson-> Switzer in Dallas or Gruden -> Callahan in Oakland. One good year riding on the coattails of what had been established and then a fall from grace.

Like many “mistakes” it was only a mistake in that the gamble didn’t work out. If it had, it would have been the samrt move.
Look, the Colts ate up the Jags secondary in a game-tying drive just moments earlier, and the Jags were going ultra conservative (the had a running play to start the drive). The Jags looked like a team trying not to lose in regulation, not a team going for the win.
So Caldwell called a TO to force an unconfident and less talented team to make a play in the pass game. Unfortunately, they did and went on to make a low percentage FG to win.
Percentagewise, the odds were in Caldwell’s favor that the Jags would make a mistake, and give Manning the ball. And if that happened, there’s no doubt the Colts would have picked up the 30-40 yards for the game-winning FG.

Of course Caldwell is a genus in his own mind.
He still defends taking the ball away from Manning by running the ball 3 times and a punt at the end of the first half in the super bowl which let the Saints score and switch the momentum.

Even if they weren’t playing for over time, that means they were playing for a field goal. If that’s the case, then why would the Colts call a time out?!?! The Jags had only 1 time out left! The Colts basically gave them a free time out to extend the game! Either way they argue it, it makes no sense!
The bad call was horrible, but their sorry attempts to cover it up and make the fans sound dumb is getting so old. Not going for 16-0 was a bad idea. Playing the same base 4-3 Defense and getting burned both on the ground or through the air (it’s usually the preference of the oposing team on how they want to beat us). We’re not as dumb as you tell us we are!!

The Colts announced he was going to be the coach almost 2 seasons before he got the job. They had to know exactly what they were getting. No Rooney rule here, the had 2 seasons to change their minds!!!!

I would imagine Caldwell regrets the decision. At least own up to the mistake Caldwell and admit that if given the situation again you would do it differently because your job as a coach is to put your players in situations that give them the best chance to win…which you didn’t do.
I’m not much of a Jets fan, but if Rex Ryan pulled something like this he would at least come out and say, “Ok, I screwed up.”

Caldwell follows a long line of folks who walked into a great job by being loyal to the previous boss. You can go back to Phil Bengston (Lombardi) Siefert (Walsh) and Switzer (Johnson) and look at guys that were given these gifts and proved they were not up to the task.

I dont think it really mattered last year, they would have lost to the Saints regardless of whether they were 18-0 at the time, or 16-2…..

I feel your pain Indy fans just hope he doesnt get 11 years to call timeouts at the most inopportune time, like us Eagles fans have had to. Its actually a fun game to play after you realize all is lost, When is Andy going to call a random timeout?

How’d that decision work out for ya? Terrible head coach. And another terrible decision. Why this bum is employed is beyond me, and I don’t give a hoot about the Colts.

I was the guy who called in to the Polian Radio Show & really pushed the issue. Surprisingly, Polian calmly agreed with all of “the facts” (ie. game situations) I had laid out except that he wasn’t convinced Del Rio was playing for OT. I tried to jump back in & argue that point (they didn’t get a big kickoff return so Del Rio chose to run a simple dive, no urgency to line up quickly, no way he uses his final timeout there) but they had already cut me off.
As a Colts fan, I am now really concerned about Caldwell & Polian. Everything they say seems to put all of the blame on the players.
Caldwell made a dumb decision…but then they both blamed the D (Polian must have mentioned Hayden’s dropped INT 6 times during the show) for not stopping the Jags from scoring.
(Hint: If Caldwell did NOTHING, that would have stopped the Jags from scoring too!)
Whenever personnel issues are brought up, Polian says “we’ve got the guys who can get it done, but they’re just not doing it.”
(In other words, I’m the best GM in the league but those players as well as they can.)
Until Sunday, I thought Del Rio was the dumbest Coach in the NFL. Well, Del Rio got out-Del Rio’d by Caldwell on Sunday.

As Vic Ketchman reported, Del Rio wasn’t playing for OT. He called a timeout before the Colts TD play to preserve time on the clock.
Handing the ball to Jones Drew (who got 8 yards) was a good call. It helped them get into FG range.

Caldwell is a terrible coach. What does he even do? His job when he came in was basically let Peyton keep doing his thing. He came into a great situation; all he had to do was not muck it up.

These are football coaches not rocket scientists and in all honesty 99.999% of them aren’t very bright compared to the average non-football-world smart person.
I am not the first to say this but teams really should hire someone who is smart and sharp as a tack and have his/her ONLY job be clock management.

I really don’t agree that Jack was playing for OT. If he was, then he wouldn’t have called a timeout after the Addai play was being reviewed. He told the ref after it was reviewed to call a time out. If he was playing for OT why call a time out there?

The odds of the Colts stopping them from gaining 2 yards on the next 2 plays were close to a 0% chance considering how poor their D has been, especially against the run.
The odds of them completing a 20-25 yard pass to put them in field goal range is about a 50% chance on that soft Colts D. He shoulda been happy to go into over-time. If he lost the coin toss, then the confidence of stopping them from moving the ball on 2nd and 2 should have carried over into having confidence that they would have stopped the Jags in OT had they gotten the ball. There is no explanation for this other than he didn’t clearly think about everything while in the moment. He and Polian are so arogant that they can’t admit any wrong doing… hence the let down in the Super Bowl and the constant 12 yard cushions their D-Backs are giving opposing WR’s!
