Source: Vikings, Moss haven't started talking terms yet

Bill Simmons of ESPN perked up a slow Tuesday night by accidentally tweeting the existence of a rumor that the Patriots could be trading receiver Randy Moss to the Vikings.  Jay Glazer of FOX has since reported that, indeed, the two sides are talking.

But Glazer points out that the deal hinges on the Vikings and Moss working out a new contract.

Per a league source, that part of the process has not yet commenced.

Moss repeatedly has complained about the lack of a contract beyond the 2010 season.  He’ll want an extension that gives him something close to market value ($9 million or more per year).

The lure of unfinished business with the franchise for which he played from 1998 through 2004 and the ability to finally hook up with Brett Favre could be a strong draw.  The prospect of facing cornerback Darrelle Revis on Monday night could be a factor, too.

Heck, the return of Moss could even be enough to get Favre to return again for 2011.

These two love birds (Favre & Moss) always did want to play with each other. I see this getting done.

If Moss is a Viking it is most likely a lock that Farve would come back in 2011, unless the Vikings win the Superbowl this year and/if there is a season next year.

  5. Lott42 says: Oct 5, 2010 8:20 PM

Today, or tomorrow Randy will be gone. The Patriots would be wise to maximize his value. Fact is that he never should of popped off on the good ship Belichick. Just ask Mankins or Law. It doesn’t pay.

Randy will accept, if it wasnt for joe buck ranting about randy mooning the puckers he would still be in minnesota. The media ran him out, not the people he knows this is where he belongs, weep pats fans he will agree in no time.

As much dislike I have for Favre, Moss, and the Vikings as people, Favre throwing to Moss makes for some exciting football.
The question is, does Favre have enough left to keep the magic going all season? And if things go bad, will Randy get frustrated and quit trying again?
Very intresting watching the Packers/Vikings GM philosophies. One GM throws picks away to win now, while sacrificing the future. The other holds onto them tighter than a dog with a bone, while sacrificing the present…..bastards both of em!

  13. Chicagojeff says: Oct 5, 2010 8:25 PM

Well maybe.. finally Brian Kenny and Jason Smith will learn what happens when Randy is not on the field. It’ll be interesting to see how hard it is for Tom Brady to find Edelman and Welker when they are facing coverage with the safety sliding in THEIR direction finally.
This deal will go down like the Richard Seymour one.. the Pats D Line still hasn’t recovered from his departure.

As a Pats fan I don’t like to say this, but… it makes a lot of sense, from a certain point of view, in exactly the way the Seymour trade made sense.

  22. 2MuchTime says: Oct 5, 2010 8:34 PM

Dumb, just dumb. This is desperation and mismanagement of roster personnel.
    By the numbers;
    They let Chester Taylor walk
No talks with Sidney Rice for salary adjustments to match his NFL ranking of 3rd best WR. Rice delays his surgery and misses half a season which doubles his earning for playing the remaining games.
The Favre mess and oh how that is working out.
Now Moss? I really don’t think so. The Vikes could end up 9-7 with no real plan for the next year.
Oh that’s right, it’s a lock out by the owners.

  23. CanadianVikingFan says: Oct 5, 2010 8:34 PM

It was reported that the Vikings sent away Jayme Mitchell for a late rounder in 2012 to Cleveland. I’d expect to see that and a higher end mid pick.

  33. NY Olive says: Oct 5, 2010 8:49 PM

Believe it when I see it. Pats could just be using this as means of determining his market value… or so I hope.

  34. 2MuchTime says: Oct 5, 2010 8:51 PM

The Vikes will trade Ray Edwards for Moss. I bet that is the deal. Edwards is an excellent DE and the Vikes are very deep on defensive linemen.
Edwards made a comment earlier this year about not being able to get a deal next year. He already thinks he is on the bubble.
Pat williams has been talking about this being his last year and Kevin Williams enters a contract year in 2011.
The Vikes will throw the money at Kevin Williams before they sign Edwards. The Pats want Edwards. Pats’ D sucks right now and Edwards would solve some problems.
    Just a thought

  35. Neverend says: Oct 5, 2010 8:52 PM

Ray Edwards, 2011 3rd round pick for Randy Moss. Makes sense to me. Brian Robison and that usc kid they drafted in the 4th round should compensate for edwards’ absence

  38. Richm2257 says: Oct 5, 2010 8:56 PM

This story has zero credibility, regardless of WHO the source is.
Moss is simply too valuable to New England at this stage of the season and they have no one to replace him with that even remotely can fill his shoes. Moss may or may not be in line for a new contract from the Patriots, but no way does Belichick let him go while he stil has plenty of talent and there’s no one to replace him.
If they';re not going to offer Moss a new contract, they’ll move him alright, and get something for him. But it’s too early in the season to send him off now.
And anyone who thinks the Vikes still have a prayer this year with Favre is delusional. Dude is done, and he sure as hell isn’t coming back next year even if he has THREE Randy Moss’.
Just a lot of talk, and wishful thinking.

  39. bryan says: Oct 5, 2010 8:56 PM

does it really matter? Moss is a has been…

  40. JoeSixPack says: Oct 5, 2010 8:57 PM

One wonders if Moss’ lack of use last night comes about through some BS he pulled this week to try to force a trade.
If Moss doesn’t get paid now, he knows he may likely be looking at not getting his next contract until free agency 2012 when he’s 35.
Strictly a business decision, but one that he had a high incentive to force.
One wonders if there’s any chance of the Patriots obtaining Vincent Jackson in a trade to make all of this go down… That would be a make a ton of sense – they’d get a younger player who’s a better deep threat than Moss.

  41. APbabyjesus28 says: Oct 5, 2010 9:14 PM

  44. Fire Ted says: Oct 5, 2010 9:17 PM

yeah, that 99 season ended well, huh? In the words of Gary Andersen…..DOH! Moss can’t bring the Vikings a trip to the Super Bowl any more than Favre did last year. At the end of the day, it’s still Favre pulling the trigger when the chips are down and he fails miserably every time…thanks to who? Micheal Vick, the guy who slayed the Lambeau Field playoff dragon. Why not bring in Cris Carter while they’re at it?

The press had NOTHING to do with it. The Wilf’s were crestfallen when Moss was gone before they could close the deal to buy the team.
Red McCombs screwed Minnesota, the franchise and the fans by trading Moss, in order ‘shorten up the register’ and make a few extra million before selling the team. The San Antonio used car salesman and skipped town without so much as a backward glance… and chuckled “Purple Pride” as he cashed the check.

Ray Edwards is garbage. I don’t even know how many Vike fans even like him. He underperforms despite having 1 on 1 blocks. I personally would love to see him gone, he also talks too damn much.

Even as a Packer fan, this is exciting. I always thought Favre’s list went:
    1. Win Superbowl and go out on top
    2. Play with Randy Moss
    3. Stick it to Ted Thompson
I didn’t know this would happen so soon. I thought Randy would hit Free Agency and sign with the Vikes. Then he’d fly down to Hattiesburg, and Favre would do the opposite of “puke in his mouth a little bit” and 2011 would be Favre’s last “last” season.
