NFL confirms review of Brett Favre-Jenn Sterger matter

The NFL has confirmed that it is reviewing allegations that Brett Favre sent inappropriate photos to Jenn Sterger when he was a player on the Jets and she worked for the team.

We are reviewing the matter,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told the Associated Press.

In September Aiello declined to answer when PFT asked him whether the league was looking into the story.

Two months ago,
Deadspin published allegations from Sterger, who currently appears on The Daily Line on Versus, that when she was an in-house sideline reporter for the Jets, Favre sent her photos of his penis. Yesterday Deadspin published what it said were those photos, and also published what it said were voice mail messages that Favre left for Sterger.

Sterger has not commented publicly.

Favre was asked about the story on Thursday and refused to get into it, saying, “I’ve got my hands full with the Jets.”

The NFL’s confirmation that it is looking into the matter likely means that media outlets which have previously ignored the story — especially ESPN, which will televise Monday night’s game between the Jets and Favre’s Vikings — will feel compelled to acknowledge it now. So Favre will continue to get questions like the one he got on Thursday. And the NFL will continue to get questions about whether its review of the matter turned up inappropriate conduct from one of the league’s highest-profile stars.

Thanks again to the tabloid media for digging up a non-issue to make it into a sex scandal. A private issue between two adults has been turned around to look like sexual harassment. The woman obviously didn’t feel harassed or offended because she never brought it up to anyone but some friends as a “hey check this out” type of thing. Ridiculous. Hope their proud.
I wish someone was out there to dig up all the skeletons in these tabloid media people’s closets.

  17. damnvarmint says: Oct 8, 2010 4:13 PM

You should give us readers a little more credit in the brains department rather than repeatedly remind us that he won’t address the issue. He is not going to address it. He will simply say “lawyers, personal matter (even though it isn’t), league office, blah, blah.” The big news will come when his Hattiesburg farm becomes the farm of his soon to be ex-wife. Until then, stopped acting shocked that he hasn’t said a damn thing.

One girl could just hit the delete button and file a complaint. The other got physically assaulted and entrapped.
These two incidents are totally different and can’t even be compared. You gotta compare a pic of Lil’ Brett to what the Jets JUST did to that Azteca reporter.

  32. ChiPackFan says: Oct 8, 2010 4:20 PM

  47. rpiotr01 says: Oct 8, 2010 4:25 PM

Times like these I wish PFT was still doing the “Pic of the Day,” though there’s little chance Florio would continue to rag on Favre once he became a Viking.

  48. Jeremy says: Oct 8, 2010 4:25 PM

I’m sure the NFL will investigate this with the ferver and dillegence as they did the Favre/Viking tampering investigation.
Goodell has a big enough rug to sweep this under.

  49. Hershal Walkers #5 Personality says: Oct 8, 2010 4:26 PM

Guilty of what? What crime did he commit? What charges have been filed against Brett? Creepy-Yes, Gross-Yes, but what crime did he commit? Last I check Ben R-Investigated by the Police for Rape (Twice), Vick sentence for dogfighting, Plaxico-sentenced for shooting himself, Pacman-investigated for Las Vegas shooting and multiple incidents. Before Brett can serve any suspension you first need to have some form of charges brought against him. The only person who can do that is Jenn Sterger, till then all Goodell can do is include him into the training program he setup for the rest of the Jets players. Did VY serve any punishment for his Strip Club fight, Nope. What about Braylon Edwards DUI? So good luck to Goodell and the Packer nation trying to push the issue…Plus a 2-3year old indecent, Brother Please…

  50. ijr213 says: Oct 8, 2010 4:26 PM

Game suspensions because he sent text messages? Are you guys crazy? That’s just a dude being a creeper, which isn’t a crime unless the girl presses charges or submits a restraining order, which she didn’t.
He doesn’t have a suit pending on rape from a hotel employee and he didn’t take no for an answer in a Georgia town bar’s bathroom.
Let’s also point out that in order to get suspended, you have to do something heinous (i.e. Donte Stallworth) or you have to have a track record of offenses (i.e. Tank Johnson, Brandon Marshall, and Pacman Jones). Brett does not.

  56. foofeiter says: Oct 8, 2010 4:29 PM

Why should he be suspended? Big Ben had two separate women file legal complaints against him. This woman wasn’t complaining, she just said it matter of factly to the deadspin reporter. Nothing was taken to the police, no complaints. Mostly bitter Packer and Jet fans I would guess on this one.

  57. BearsDuh says: Oct 8, 2010 4:30 PM

Upon further review, his wife confirms that it is, indeed, Bretts’ penis.

  58. JP says: Oct 8, 2010 4:31 PM

I’m no Favre lover, and as a Bears fan I despise the Vikings, but please…people calling for a 4-6 game suspension need to wake up.
Big Ben got 4 weeks for spending a night pumping drinks into an underage girl (underage as in, under 21) and then at the end of the evening having some sort of non-consensual (or ambiguously-consensual) sexual contact with her in the bathroom of a bar that resulted in her filing a sexual assault complaint with the police.
Favre is alleged to have sent some tweets (suggestive perhaps but not even “off-color”) and an indecent picture of himself. Wrong? Yes. Criminal (if the part about the picture is true)? Yes. But not on the same level as getting a teenager wasted and taking her into the back bathroom of a bar for some maybe-consensual-maybe-not-consensual sexual contact. So if Ben got 4 games, what Favre did can’t possibly be a 4-6 game suspension, at least not if the league is at all consistent in the way it applies discipline.
Not saying I agree with that. Just trying to think about it the way the league is going to think about it.

  59. JaggedMark says: Oct 8, 2010 4:31 PM

  62. ijr213 says: Oct 8, 2010 4:33 PM

I think it should also be mentioned that from the same article that Deadspin originally reported, Jen Sterger has said that numerous athletes have sent her crotch shots. Are these individuals also being investigated or is Favre the only one? That’s the real story.

  63. Infidel says: Oct 8, 2010 4:34 PM

Batman – Fabulous post. Just freakin’ splendid. :-)

  64. PurpleRaid12 says: Oct 8, 2010 4:34 PM

I heard the messages on YouTube and on Deadspin and I got to say, it’s definitely him. Favre is a great football player, he loves the game and he can still compete into his 40′s. That being said, he’s an absolute jackass for doing this, Not only to himself, but to his family. This guy is a huge egomaniac, and he clearly thinks he won’t get caught and/or thinks he’s above everyone (most athletes think that anyway) but that doesn’t mean I won’t cheer for him as long as he’s in purple… If the NFL does find that it is him (which it most certainly is, all the evidence is there) he most certainly should be suspended, good thing is…. it probably won’t happen while he’s a Viking – cause he’ll be done after this season, or will he?

  65. minnesconsin_ad says: Oct 8, 2010 4:35 PM

Without Sterger herself stepping up and making formal allegations, somehow pressing charges (statute of limitations anybody?), there’s no way the NFL takes any real action. As much as everyone likes to call her a gold-diggin ho, it doesn’t seem like she’s very interested in pursuing this.
Listen, I’d love to see Bert receive a fair punishment for this unforgivably stupid behavior, I just don’t think it’s in the cards.

  66. Mooch says: Oct 8, 2010 4:35 PM

Favre will never be questioned…too high profile and a marketing tool of the NFL. Just like Big Ben, he would have to be a serial offender to get ESPN on his case.
That’s reserved for Randy Moss and his ilk, when they pretend to pull their pants down in Lambeau. Because that’s the biggest crime in history! Or maybe when T.O. makes his QB cry.
Double standard based on what the NFL relies on for marketing, who the ESPN talking heads happen to like.

  67. SteveO says: Oct 8, 2010 4:36 PM

Anyone begging for suspension is not a real NFL fan. Probably the same people who hope for opposing star players to get injured. Very very weak guys.

  68. madmike says: Oct 8, 2010 4:37 PM

Love how everyone is demanding 4-6 game suspension. For what exactly?
Sterger herself hasn’t said anything officially about this. Even if it is proved that Vrett left the messages and send his junk, there is no proof of harassment, but he can always claim she asked for them. There is nothing he said in either alleged voice mail that is inapropriate or criminal. Ben Rothlisberger forced himself on a woman in a bathroom…and got 4 games. Even if it is true, this is nowhere near that level. And good luck proving that it’s him on the VMs or in the pics. Deadspin says they got this from a 3rd party, not Sterger. How does a 3rd party get Sterger’s MySpace message screen shots, cell phone voice mail recordings and text message photos? Sorry, but it fishy all around, and just because Deadspin splices together a video doesn’t mean an automatic suspension. No law has been broken, no complaint from Sterger has been filed…so far what does the NFL have to base a suspension on? Nothing.

Judging by every picture I’ve seen of her in a torn-down-the- front Jets t-shirt ( and shes a sidline reporter? ), showing off her over inflated pigskins, I hafta think, “It takes 2 to tango”. This reeks of a cash grab ( because of a failed extorsion attempt? ), both from “Deadspin” and what will soon be an offer from Playboy.

What Roethlisberger did, basically rape that girl, makes Favre look like a saint in comparison. First, I doubt Favre sent her pics of his schlonze. I just can’t believe, with her rejecting him up to that point that he would do that.

  100. Hauschild says: Oct 8, 2010 4:59 PM

I’m still a bit perplexed by these accusations, though, since they did not go thru proper legal channels – tabloid versus a filed police report.
Now I am thinking how the league can even investigate a matter that hasn’t been first reported to the police?
If it hasn’t been reported to the police, there’s no way Brett should be vilified because he has broken no law. Unless the NFL is going to get into the business of enforcing laws and compete directly with local police departments.

  101. Fantasia says: Oct 8, 2010 4:59 PM

First of all, Big Ben was never charged with rape. Has NEVER been arrested for anything in his life.
Favre may not have done something as bad as what Roethlisberger is being accused/punished for. But, this is still inappropriate enough for some kind of suspension if it is proven true.
Fair is fair. I expect the NFL to be consistent with the punishments they hand out.

NFL Conduct Policy: “It is not enough simply to avoid being found guilty of a crime. Instead, as an employee of the NFL or a member club, you are held to a higher standard and expected to conduct yourself in a way that is responsible, promotes the values upon which the League is based, and is lawful.”
What Brett did was not only in direct conflict with NFL values- sending nude photographs of himself violates sexual harassment and indecent exposure laws. Sterger already said she was appalled and called Brent a creepy “douche”. BWAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
I imagine Goodell will realize that he can’t play favorites if Brett is found guilty of doing what he’s been accused of… and punish him accordingly. I would be satisfied with Favre being suspended a game.

According to the authorities, Ben did not rape anyone and the medical exam showed he did not have intercourse with Ms. DTF.
Ben and Brett have only themselves to blame. It’s stupid for high-profile athletes to get publicly drunk with women who advertise they’re “Down to F***” OR send women photos of their willies.
If Sterger tells the NFL she has no interest in pursuing a harassment complaint, the NFL probably will drop it–as they should. Deanna should call a good lawyer. The Jets should think about hiring male sideline reporters.

The real over/under is which reporter Brett chooses to make the “I’m sorry if I offended anyone” interview after the NFL announces good ol’ Brett may have exhibited a lack in judgement but certainly not enough to lead to any penalty from the league. There will also be the obligatory donation to some non-profit foundation formed to instruct on the appropriate times to click the dick pic.
Employing their typical band-aid approach, the NFL will sponsor “Johnson & Johnson” player classes, employing some obscure professor who is an expert on when to send dick pics and how receiving dick pics can make some chicks sick.

    @vikesfan4life …
According to dozens of witnesses, a woman telling everyone she was “Down to F***” followed Ben from club to club, pinching his backside and using his pals to get next to him. She was buying her own drinks and getting drunk out of her skull. Witnesses said she was climbing all over him and the DA said she engaged him in highly sexualized conversation. They were out of sight together less than 10 minutes and the medical exam showed they did not have intercourse–which is the only sex act she alleged. Only her friends–who Ben had ejected from the party earlier–told a story about the bodyguard blocking the door. All the other witnesses refuted it. She even complained in one written statement that Ben had just dumped her in the bathroom and left without a word.
In his suspension letter, Goodell said his people didn’t find anything to contradict the findings of the authorities–which was that there was no evidence of any assault. He suspended Ben for getting drunk and acting rauchy in public.
So tell me, genius, what did Ben do that was so much worse than sending out public photos of your wee wee???? And appparently Brett has a loooong history of bar sex. The only difference is that Ben is single. And Brett was lucky enough not to get accused of anything (that we know of).

Yet, if the league didn’t like the cat calls the Jets were making to a sideline reporter (who also didn’t complain) they certainly would take offense to this type of alleged behavior.

Favre also pursued two team massage therapists, according to one of the women.
The woman (who wishes to remain anonymous for now — we’ll call her “Mandy”) worked as a massage therapist for the team for a couple years, but she says never had an incident with a player until No. 4 showed up at training camp at Hofstra University, where the Jets still worked out in 2008. “He was on the table next to mine,” she tells me. “He was looking at my ass the whole time while I worked on another player. He was … ogling me.”
The woman who was massaging Brett that day (massage therapist No. 2, or “Lindsay”) exchanged numbers with him. (Mandy claims it’s common for players to take the numbers of team-contracted massage therapists should they need additional rubdowns off campus. Yeah, I know. Please don’t.)
Lindsay received a text message from Favre, according to Mandy. Lindsay assumed it was for a massage but quickly realized Brett was asking for more. He invited both Lindsay and Mandy back to his hotel room. Mandy claims that the texts became increasingly inappropriate (“just nasty stuff”), but she adds that Brett did apologize when he found out she was married.
This apology over text, however, wasn’t enough for Mandy’s husband. We’ll call him “John”.
“I called him on his phone and told him I wanted an apology. He acted all arrogant. He refused to apologize,” John tells me in a phone conversation.
Mandy and John say they approached attorneys about the situation but were told that because Mandy was a private contractor, there were no grounds for a harassment case. They didn’t pursue anything.

  177. Deb says: Oct 8, 2010 7:25 PM

    @Art Van Delay’s brother …
The only reason for the NFL to explore this Favre incident is her employment with the Jets. Sexual harassment is about power, intimidation, and control. She said she kept the evidence “for laughs”–doesn’t sound like she felt threatened. So this should be dropped. Favre cheating on a cancer-stricken wife is no one else’s business but theirs.
Ben had some issues with recklessness and lack of discipline and the suspension may have been necessary to get his attention. But it should have come from the team. Goodell has no right to suspend a guy for acting like an idiot in a bar … because players are acting like idiots in bars all the time and Goodell doesn’t care unless the media makes an issue of it. The NFL shouldn’t be letting the likes of TMZ and Deadspin direct their discipline. Now here they are in this wee willie winkie nonsense and all they’ve done is blow an unsavory, embarrassing story out of proportion rather than putting a lid on it.
Where is Rozell’s ghost when you need him?

It’s the NFL. Do anything close to wrong and you’re suspended. Big Ben was never charged with rape, but alleged sexual assault. Favre could technically be charged with sexual harassment, which could get him suspended.

  179. Ambrose says: Oct 8, 2010 7:44 PM

Until the woman in question comes forward there is no story. The “third party” that released this stuff could be a Deadspin operative that hacked her computer for all we know. That makes it different than Tiger Woods or Bill Clinton. Whether it is Favre or not, it is not a story unless she starts talking…and it doesn’t look like she plans to. But one pretty good indicator that Favre is guilty is whether or not his wife shows up in a luxury box to watch the game. They must have plenty of friends in NY that would offer her a place to watch..which she nearly always does. If she doesn’t show, there is surely trouble in Dogpatch and “Lil Abner” Favre will be in the news a lot…very soon.

  180. CaptainFantastik says: Oct 8, 2010 7:50 PM

Once again the majority of PFT readers prove their are the bottom of the barrel when it comes to the American sports fan base. A couple of key facts for the uninformed masses regarding Roethlisberger:
    1) Ben’s defense attorney has possession of emails from the first accuser bragging about having slept with him. Tends to diminish the validity of a “rape” claim when you brag to all your friends about it the next day and say you’re “moving to Pittsburgh to have Ben’s lovechild”. Even her fellow employees gave sworn statements about what a nutball she is. But of course, you guys wouldn’t know that because you have an axe to grind.
    2) The 2nd accuser claims they had unprotected sex, and yet forensic evidence proves there was no sex. Not even the 1 BILLIONTH of a gram of DNA required to make an ID. “far less than 1 nanogram” to use the GBIforensic investigator’s exact words. It is literally impossible to have unprotected sex and leave “far less than a billionth of a gram” of DNA evidence. Also, witness testimony from bar patrons points to this chick hanging all over him all night and following him from bar to bar.
Ben was suspended for drinking irresponsibly and putting himself, team and league’s image in a bad light…..NOT rape. Seems the same is true of Favre here. So yes, a suspension is most certainly justified. Too bad the NFL and ESPN can’t sweep this under the rug anymore. This is coming out and it’s going to blow up. And if Goodell doesn’t hold true to the precedent he set with Ben then he is clearly a greasy slimeball playing favorites. And spare me the “first offense” excuse…..these stories about Favre have been trickling out for years.

  181. Mark McKee says: Oct 8, 2010 7:51 PM

Well, there is one positive aspect to this story. With all the guys commenting that sending a photo of his pud, wasn’t a big deal and shouldn’t be considered harrassment, one realizes that there are now more gay men following the NFL than ever before and many are huge Favre fans. You can clearly tell that these guys wish Favre would have sent them a copy, and it would have been “no big deal” I just hope none of you guys are married. (to women)

The real over/under is which reporter Brett chooses to make the “I’m sorry if I offended anyone” interview
    —————-
Andrea Kramer (or however her name is spelled) would do the interview. She interviewed Moss back when he hit some traffic cop with his car and got caught with some stems in his ashtray or something like that. He cried during the interview with Andrea, and that’s all ESPN needed to show us all so that we knew Moss is just a wonderful but misunderstood human being. Who happens to drive around pushing cops with his car that happens to smell like resin and might just have a bud or two left over under the dash.
ESPN makes my ears bleed. Buncha tools spewing propaganda with no regard for reality.
So, Andrea Kramer would be the perfect accomplice.

    @SamBamCunningham …
Perhaps if you were literate and did some research you’d know that the authorities determined there was no validity to the assault claim. In his suspension letter, Goodell specifically said the NFL did not disagree with the authorities and the suspension had nothing to do with the assault claim. Ben was suspended for action like an idiot in a bar. Hahaha that you’re too ignorant to know any of that and just made a fool of yourself.
    @Leroy’sButler …
Being an intelligent, well-educated woman who has carefully researched a legal case and am posting the findings of the authorities does not make me a whore. First off, even as Viking fan, I’ve found a ton of these comments incredibly funny.
But there are also a bunch of inaccurate comments as well.
It doesn’t matter whether or not Sterger was an employee of the Jets. i.e. If its the vending machine person (not an employee) grabbing the rear of one of my employees or one of my employees making sexual overtones to the fax machine salesperson (not an employee) it could be sexual harassment.
This is why this story of John & Mandy reeks of fabrication:
Mandy and John say they approached attorneys about the situation but were told that because Mandy was a private contractor, there were no grounds for a harassment case. They didn’t pursue anything.
    http://dea dspin.com/5659474/so urces-two-more-women -who-worked-with-jet s-received-lewd-text s-from-favre
This would imply any private contractor would be fair game for sexual harassment. Think about that for a moment and then realize how idiotic that would be.
A victom of sexual harassent can bring a lawsuit against both the employee (allegedly Favre) and the employer (the NFL) thus the investigation by the NFL – as a matter of course they have to. However, Ms Sterger harmed such a case when she didn’t report it to the Jets, the NFL or any other authority and instead gave the story to Deadspin. She almost certainly sunk it when she said she gets these types of pics from many athletes and kept the voicemails & pics from Favre “for laughs”. Perhaps she hasn’t persued any claims because she fears Mr Favre may have kept some corespondence from her that would paint a different story.
I will say the first message sure sounds like Favre, the second one not so much (sounds like Allen Iverson when he says “practice”). The one thing I haven’t seen anyone comment one is the WATCH. According to the original story the smoking gun linking the pictures to Favre was his watch. They even showed some pictures of the face of it from when he retired from the Packers. However, none of the pictures of li’ll Brett and his handlers show the watch. The band is in a couple, but the face of the watch isn’t at all. In fact, the band of the watch is clearly not the same as the one from his retirement press conference.
Florio – find out about the watch. You can’t talk about a smoking gun and then not produce.
Finally, whether it turns out to be true or not, I always tell my sons that athletes are roll models only as far as how they prepare for and play their respective games and nothing more. Expecting them to be roll models for anything more only sets you up for disappointment.

I’m not defending what LeRoy’s Butler said, but don’t act like Viking fans don’t use the word whore. Are these the same Viking fans that use every homophobic slur under the sun?

  200. Ridge_Runner says: Oct 9, 2010 12:13 PM

Should the allegations turn out to be true, Favre is in for a host of trouble. This behaviour is not simple “sexting”, it constitutes workplace sexual harassment as the woman in question was also an employee of the Jets. Do you really think the league is just going to brush this issue under the rug at a time when it is trying to expand its female fanbase?
Regardless of what the league may or may not do, Vikes fans should worry about how this incident may affect Favre’s marriage, and how that kind of distraction may very well cause his play to slide even further than it already has this season.
The magic is gone, Minnesota. Prepare for losing seasons for the forseeable future, especially once T-Jack takes over next season (at the very latest).

You would expect they would have a zero tolerance policy, regardless of who it is or their status.
The NFL Personal Conduct Policy could be used to discipline Favre, regardless if Sterger wants to file charges. If this problem is commonplace, and the NFL was serious about sending a message for zero tolerance, who better to make an example of?
