We explained earlier today that the investigation involving Vikings quarterback Brett Favre could move quickly.
Chris Mortensen of ESPN says that it could move very quickly.
Mort said on Sunday NFL Countdown that the case is on a “fast track,” and that NFL Security will meet with Favre if/when the league has obtained enough information from former Jets sideline reporter Jenn Sterger indicating that the allegations of unwanted voice and text messages are accurate.
Mortensen suggests that the investigation could be wrapped up in four-to-six weeks, and that Favre potentially could end the season under suspension.
But here’s the most important thing to keep in mind — Favre has appeal rights. Though NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell retains full judge/jury/executioner authority over matters of this nature, the league would have to give Favre due process. So if discipline is imposed by Thanksgiving, how could an appeal be resolved by January?
For the same reasons that the league shouldn’t brush the case under the rug because it involves Brett Favre, the league also should not give the case extra attention or urgency because it involves Brett Favre. The league needs to treat the case like it would treat any other case involving any other player.
