The San Francisco 49ers, winless through five games, would be the first team in NFL history to make it to the playoffs after such a bad start.
Owner Jed York claims they will.
“We’re going to win the division,” York said in a text message to ESPN.
(In fairness to York, he didn’t specify the year. So, eventually, he’ll be right. Maybe.)
The table is set for a run to .500. The Niners have played well enough to win games against the Saints, Falcons, and Eagles. Next up, San Fran has a quintet of games that they could, and in some cases should win: Panthers, Raiders, Broncos, Rams, Bucs.
But we’re not sure that it makes sense to be publicly boasting about winning the division, especially when the 49ers have yet to even win a game.
If the 49ers don’t win the division, we’ve got a feeling that the identical twin brother of Jets coach Rex Ryan would fit in quite nicely as the next head coach of the team York owns.
