Look, been a Broncos fan my whole life, Don’t ask for much. But if the Broncos do not run out and do what they have to do to get Merriman on this team, then I’ll have to believe were not trying to improve.
Our linebackers are horrible (Because of injuries mostly). With a healthy Ayers, Dumervil back in the lineup, and Merriman as a role player/pass rush specialist) depth wouldn’t be a huge issue and he could make a huge impact. He’s smart, knows football, he’s just not healthy.
Sign him for reasonable, Shut him down for the season if you have to, and then roll him out nice and healthy like a shiny new car next season.
Ayers/Dumervil/Merriman/DJ Williams
That’s some decent linebackers there. Ayers has really improved rushing the passer this year and having Dumervil next year will help to open up the field for him more. He’s never had any true issues in rushing defense. Having Merriman to come in and spell either of them and compete would only improve the quality of our linebackers.
Denver do the smart thing. Improve the team with a quality veteran for a reasonable contract. 4 Years 10-12 Million would be fine with the fan base I promise.

Getting cut by San Diego could be the best thing for Shawn Merriman. The organization is run by an idiot in A. J. Smith. I remember when L.T. was washed up in San Diego. Now, L.T. is starting for the Jets and playing well.

So heal up on the Chargers bill, come to Green Bay, play middle backer in the same defensive system you’ve played your whole career in, get healthy and strong over the off season, team up with Barnett, the FREAK and Zombo next year, Thats a solid Linebacking corps.

The PED comments are tiring, but Merriman brought that on himself. Guys get their knees blown out all the time and manage to come back and be productive. From what I recall, Merriman pissed around about getting his knee fixed and tried to play on it. Maybe the guy just wasn’t committed to his rehab. All it means to me is one less scripted celebration to endure after a guy makes a play he’s being paid to make. Roping a cow, turning out the lights, doing that stupid kick I saw one of the Chargers do after stopping a run after a short gain, or that Denver-esque salute that Rolando McClain does after making a stop are things I don’t want to see.

How many times are morons going to reply with the same steroids comments? I’d also guess half the people will secretly be happy if their team snatches up Merriman.
Injuries have plagued him and the Chargers did him a favor and aren’t holding on to him

most people think it was after the juice when he started to suck. It’s not. he got 12.5 sacks a year and a half after he was suspended. The reconstructive surgery was caused by a dirty filthy cheap shot but Mawae and Stewart on the Titans. It DID cause him to contemplate retirement because of the severity. I actually feel really bad for the guy. He gets so much heat but his bright future was cut short by a cheap shot.

Like some others said – it’s the knee injury (thanks cheap playing Titans!) that did him in. He had a good year after he was busted.
Anyone who thinks he’ll become a pro ball LB again is fooling themselves. Merriman wanted a huge new contract and this was the year he needed to turn it on to prove it. And this is what we get.
He works hard and is a vocal leader. And now sadly just a below average player. Best of luck Shawn!

You make a fair point, in essence, but you’re forgetting the fact that the process of stopping the juicing weakens the body tremendously. Would he have been injured had he been on the stuff? I’m not sure, I don’t remember what he play looked like. I do know that his inability to fully recover from it is probably a result of the drugs. It may not have hindered his ability to perform, but surely, it did his body’s ability to sustain.
