Some teammates say Big Ben looks "better than ever"

A quarterback-dominated Notre Dame halftime report on NBC from Peter King, Jimmy Roberts, and a certain Internet hack with whom you may be familiar included a nugget of news from said Internet hack.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has impressed his teammates with his performance upon returning from a four-game suspension, a league source tells PFT.  Roethlisberger had a strong training camp; per the source, the thinking is that he now looks even better than he did during camp.

Indeed, some players think that Ben looks better than ever.

Peter King attributes the uptick to the fact that Roethlisberger spent the four weeks working on his mechanics with quarterbacks coach George Whitfield.  As Peter pointed out, few if any quarterbacks focus on the basics once the season begins.

To top it all off, Roethlisberger returns genuinely at 100 percent, not the inherently nicked-up version of 100 percent that many players experience after a month’s worth of games.

It all adds up to a big return from Big Ben, and a long day for the Cleveland Browns.

Rusty or not when he returns, at least he’ll be six weeks healthier than everybody else.

This could be bad news for the teams on the remainder of the Steelers’ schedule.

  5. buckup says: Oct 16, 2010 5:21 PM

They get paid THAT much and they can’t be bothered to put in a little extra time working on something kind of important. mechanics. Outside of the decision of where to go with the ball, that’s about as important as it gets. Even golf pros take lessons during the season. QB’s get paid too much to be this lazy.

  10. shaggeez says: Oct 16, 2010 5:42 PM

this guys game has never been dependent on fundamentals, so i don’t know if it will have any noticeable impact during the actual games. ben makes his money by holding onto the ball too long, shaking off defenders, and throwing to receivers against defensive backs that cant possibly cover for that length of time as the play breaks down.

  11. Lanman2 says: Oct 16, 2010 5:42 PM

To all you haters…If you can’t be critical of a mans play then leave him alone. He wasn’t even charged with anything. Go waste your time on Braylon Edwards. You are all just envious because your QB stinks.

Why is the fact that Big Ben is playing well confidential information? Why is this information posted here only from ‘ a league source’? This info is widely known from Pittburg media. Just more evidence that PFT never does real research into information widely available from various known news sources – who aren’t afraid to go on the record.

Oh you PFT posters are so clueless.

  20. Deb says: Oct 16, 2010 6:04 PM

It is hysterical how these junior high dweebs are the first ones on every Steelers thread making the usual rape jokes. You can almost smell the lemons they’re sucking after getting so revved up thinking the Steelers would crumble this year. What idiots. If they knew a first down from a halfback, none of this would surprise them.
I just hope the QB coach worked with him on his release. So far he’s refused to accept the possibility that sometimes he holds the ball too long. I know he’s been able to make great things happen on many occasions … and I know the o-line has sucked a lot of the time. But he bears some responsibility for 50+ sacks and that will eventually shorten his career. He just needs to make a few adjustments, not change his whole playing style. But my hope is that the defense is on fire tomorrow and the offense can get an early lead and spend the rest of the day chewing up yardage with the running game. Take nothing for granted.

Yes, actually, that’s true. Right before the season in 1973, when he for 2,000 yards, all of his teammates couldn’t believe how focused and good he looked after the tumultuous year he had in 1994. They were shocked that somebody could defy the laws of time, the laws of the government and every defense he played that year, all at the same time. What a legend.

    @ Deb:
Nice analysis of Big Ben’s flaws as a QB. Of course, she’s totally ignoring the fact that this will all count for squat when yet another woman accuses him of sexual assault, which is inevitable. The man has shown a clear pattern of drawing accusations with his boorish behavior, and where there’s smoke there is inevitibly fire.
I’ll bet Deb fifty bucks that the pig is going to resort to character at some point – within a year most likely, definitely two – he’s going to be accused again, he’ll have another lame excuse, and people are going to get sick of defending him. Even jock worshippers like Deb.

According to the prosecutor, the woman chased Roethlisberger from club to club, pinching his backside, and using other men to get close to him. She bought her own drinks on a fake ID. She initiated a graphic sexual conversation and told him she was “down to f**k.” She was out of sight only 10 minutes. And the medical exam showed she did not have intercourse. That’s why the DA said he couldn’t prove there was penetration and couldn’t prove it was against her will. But you think the guy should be on trial for rape.

  45. pitsburHGH Cheats says: Oct 16, 2010 10:09 PM

I love stealer fans. They are all a bunch of inbred yinzers that can’t see things for what they are.
First, Ben was never charged with rape because the victim decided she no longer wanted to press charges. Further, she did not pursue a civil suit despite hiring a lawyer. If you are half intelligent and not willfully ignorant, its pretty easy to see that Ben paid off the girl so that no charges would be pressed. If he didn’t have millions of dollars to pay off his victims, he would probably be in jail right now. So yes, stealer fans, Ben was never charged. But its more than likely that he raped someone and that you are going to go cheer and support a rapist. “GO STEELERS!” at the end of a post should pretty much be read as, “I’M AN IDIOT” and/or “I SUPPORT RAPE!”
Other examples of stealer fan ignorance is their continued belief that they won their two most recent super bowl fairly. They totally overlook the fact that in that same time their team doctor was fired for illegally buying over $150,000 in HGH. In case you didn’t know, doctors can legally prescribe HGH if used for legitimate purposes. Again, its pretty obvious to connect the dots to figure out who/what he was buying HGH for illegally. And, note, that HGH could not be detected in blood tests at the time. So yes, stealer fans, you team did win two super bowls. And if you want to stick your head in the sand, you can continue to think they were won fairly.
    GO YINZERS!

  46. pitsburHGH Cheats says: Oct 16, 2010 10:25 PM

    @ Deb
Regardless of what the girl did prior to those 10 minutes that she was gone, what she told the cops all along, and until paid off by Ben was apparently ready to testify to, is that she said, “no.”
If a girl flirts, talks dirty, or even buys drinks for herself illegally, that doesn’t mean she can’t change her mind when a body guard sequesters her into a public bathroom and then a professional football player comes back and exposes himself. She can then say “no” and if he forces her to engage in sexual contact, intercourse or otherwise, its rape. The fact that when the act happened she did not want it to happen and she communicated that to Ben is kind of important and shouldn’t be overlooked as you have done. All the stuff you point to is circumstantial. Her testimony would have created a strong case against him, it wasn’t until he paid her off that the charges got dropped.
Maybe in pitsburgh its ok to rape girls because, y’know, she flirted with the guy, but, generally speaking, the rest of America is against it.

Seems as though someone changed their mind…or Ben couldn’t close the deal with the most willing girl ever. My guess is the former, which is important because its a key element in proving sexual assault, i.e. that the action was not wanted. People have a right to change their minds and all that matters is that she said “no” and he didn’t listen. Charges were dropped b’c he paid her to drop them.

Oh yeah because the Steelers have always been known for their prolific offense. Give me a break dude. The Steelers couldn’t put up 38 points against the girl scouts. Keep riding the coat tails of that defense until you ride it into the ground but don’t be delusional about how many points your weak offense can score. Don’t worry though, the Refs are instructed to not get the point spread too far out of control, so I’m sure you’ll get a great spot of the football on 4th down and maybe even a missed field they might call good like the Bengals Browns game last year. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/10/09/last-word-on-the-bengals-browns-field-goal/

@pitsburHGH Cheats, Richm2257, Grumpy Old Man, jennstergerscellp …
No charges against Roethlisberger were dropped. No charges were ever filed.
According to the medical exam, no one had sex. The DA said in his statement that with or without the accuser’s cooperation, he could not prove penetration or lack of consent. He said even if she cooperated, he didn’t have enough for probable cause–the reasonable assumption that a crime occurred.
When you pay off someone, you get something in exchange. Since no charges would be filed regardless, the only thing Ben could get in exchange was a retraction. She has not retracted. Only an idiot would believe Ben paid for nothing.
Richm2257, she could not win a civil suit. And once she filed, her name would be released in the media along with ALL her outrageous behavior that night along AND the info about the sexual encounter she had earlier that day. Asked about that at his press conference, the DA said he couldn’t comment because it would violate her privacy. She has everything to lose and nothing to gain by filing a civil suit. Unlike you, civil juries can understand the medical report that there was no intercourse.
Cheats, I don’t know why they didn’t have sex. The DA said both were very drunk–I hear that can impair performance. In his only statement to cops, Roethlisberger said he told the woman she was too drunk to be back there. In one of her written statements, the woman complained that Roethlisberger dumped her in the bathroom and left without a word. Witnesses said they were out of sight less than 10 minutes. My theory is they tried but were too drunk to make it work, so he just dumped her and left. I’ve never said he was a gentleman–just that he’s not a rapist. But when you accompany a man you just met to a seedy toilet to get him off, you can’t expect to be treated like a princess.
I think the guy is a jerk. But if that were a criminal offense, Cheats, you, Richm, and Grumps would have been locked up long ago. You’re only dogging this because you hate the Steelers–otherwise you wouldn’t care. My, what big, moral men you are. Lying about a rape is a criminal offense. She got off easy.
