Junior Seau says he fell asleep, didn't attempt suicide

Former NFL linebacker Junior Seau says he fell asleep at the wheel when he drove off a cliff hours after his arrest early this morning and was not trying to kill himself.

TMZ reports that Seau told police that he wasn’t trying to commit suicide when he drove his Cadillac Escalade off a cliff in Carlsbad, California. He says he nodded off while driving.

The crash came hours after he was arrested on felony domestic violence charges and accused of attacking a woman described as his 25-year-old live-in girlfriend.

Seau reportedly showed no signs of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, but a blood test was taken shortly after the incident.

that would do it. either way, he’s lucky to be alive. in my experience, driving off cliffs is typically a short-lived pasttime

I doubt he was drunk. He just got out of the cage for at least 5 hours. thats plenty of time to sober up especially since the original report didnt mention alcohol.
he probably did fall asleep and is having a rash of horrible luck.

Are you saying that attacking a female is just part of “having a rash of horrible luck” ?

  14. George McCasland says: Oct 18, 2010 6:33 PM

First, the question that should be asked is whether he did it because was the aggressor in the domestic violence incident, or was she, and whether a female officer was dispatched to hear her story. A good example of why can be found on a 2005 episode of COPS. In it, two male San Antonio (TX) police officers arrive on a domestic violence call. When they arrived, they found the man sitting outside the house, claiming he never even went inside the house. When the officers went inside, they found a very upset woman who said he had grabbed her by the arms and neck. She had the hand shaped bruises to prove it.
The officers than went outside to place the man under arrest, just as a female officer arrived. She also went in to talk to the woman. When she came out, she informed the other officers that the hand shaped bruises were more the size and shape of the woman’s own hands, so she went to talk to the neighbors. They told her that the woman, and not the man, was the abusive one.
At this point, they released the man, but informed him that the county prosecutor could still charge him, as arrests are mandatory in Texas whenever a woman makes a domestic violence claim.
The female officer saw through the tears of the woman and saw the truth.
In my 21 years of working with men, I’ve seen it repeatedly that when a female officer is on the scene, where a false allegation may be in play, she is the one to see it.
In 1994, when Kansas passed its mandatory arrest law, something interesting happened in the City of Lawrence, a University town about 40 miles from Kansas City. Over 50% of the ones arrested for domestic violence were women. The women’s shelters protested this, saying the officers were poorly trained in knowing who the real abuser is. However, whereas the national average for female officers is just 13%, in Lawrence it was nearly 40%, with them making most of the arrests.
Talking with female officers, they tell me that they do see a lot more than the male officers do, including the evidence of male officers who are themselves victims.
He may have been the victim, but it is common when the male is the victim, he is the one arrested, as in this case involving a sheriff deputy. Also, a man his size is not going to leave minor injuries. A woman doing ti to herself would.

  22. PurpleNGold says: Oct 18, 2010 6:49 PM

It sounds reasonable. According to my interpretation of the pictures of the accident scene, the view from the cliff appeared to be similar to that of looking down from the top of a small hill to the beach. The vehicle didn’t look like it rolled and it was being towed back up the hill from the front as though he went down the hill backwards. Maybe he overcorrected and spun out.

Guy gets arrested at 2am and gets booked etc etc so at 4 am or so gets released. In addition may be told not to go back to where he normally sleeps to let things “cool down”. Not surprised at all if he falls asleep and drives off a cliff. Tire tracks will give cops an idea if the story is plausible or not. Plenty of places along the Pacific ocean where you can wind up driving off a cliff if you fall asleep. Cops would definitely lock Seau up if they thought he was suicidal and not careless. My guess is this story is exactly what Seau is saying.

  30. zleep says: Oct 18, 2010 7:13 PM

There are plenty of complexities to this story.
But people, we know the big problem here. Why is an elite millionaire athlete driving a Cadillac Escalade? You would think that people with money could buy a car that is actually good, responsive, fast, something that makes driving worthwhile. The escalade is a little red wagon, piece of dung. A cadillic freaking escalade? Maybe that’s why he drove of a cliff, just to kill one of the worst vehicles ever made.

Of course an idiot like you could have never guessed that I lived near Big Sur for several years. Driving on those roads with cliffs and blind curves (however, since Jr. live in the area they are not blind are they? He knws where they are) keeps you more awake then any stimulant in the world can. Given the circumstances involved beforehand, it is pretty obvious that this was an intentional move.

Seriously, this is obviously the result of Head trauma. Leading with the Head has to be the cause. Start suspending players who hit people while playing football and all domestic violence issues will go away!

Careful here GUYS…One of the biggest entrapment tools females have is to accuse a man of DV.
Many states, all they need to do is tell a cop that a guy hit them…and guy gets arrested. Many ‘gilted’ women use that to nail a guy.

Junior should have just said that he was going surfing and thought he could take a shortcut.
I know the “cliffs.” You don’t really think of the part he went off as “cliffs” but there are probably a couple of “real” cliffs nearby. And you still drive fully aware that losing the road to the oceanside means you are going to die when your car flips or rolls. 30 ft to the shore or not. It doesn’t need to be a 90 ft sheer cliff to be deadly.
People who fall asleep tend not to veer off sharply; they slowly lose the road with changes in direction of the road, changes in the surface, and the alignment of their wheels.
Junior was observed to have just turned off the road, straight out to the ocean.

Don’t be having 25 year old live in girlfriends. Nothing good will come of it. They need drama in their life and when they have it good they need to be even more dramatic.
Not saying what he did, whatever it happens to be, was deserving but you can head this situation off by knowing that you don’t live with a piece of ass. If you have nothing in common with this woman and the situation is closer to prostitution than one might want to admit than it won’t end well.
You can still find a good looking gal in her early 30s who is more grounded and maybe reads as well. Someone that can enhance your image in retirement instead of… well this.

  52. CapsLockKey says: Oct 18, 2010 9:06 PM

If he was wearing seatbelt its doubtful it was a suicide attempt, unless he’s a complete moron, or brain damaged from years of headshots. And while what he drove off of I guess is techinically a “cliff”, a more responsible description would have been “embankment”, but I guess that wouldn’t be as interesting a headline.

  59. DTRock78 says: Oct 19, 2010 9:15 AM

    Suicide Attempt
This story has to be updated, they just played audio on Mike and Mike of one of the police witnesses. He said the SUV was driving real slowly then he heard the engine roar and the thing whizzed past him and flew over the cliff.
Seau took too many hits to the head man, he’s probably loose.
