The Bengals offense can't get any simpler

C. Ochocinco4.jpgWatch the Bengals offense this year, and you inevitably see someone line up in the wrong spot.  Then you see a receiver run the wrong route or a blocker fail to understand a projection.

Unlike last season, the group looks explosive in short spurts.  But it’s often a disjointed group that can’t help making drive-killing mistake.  They are the poor man’s Cowboys.

Offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski is taking a lot of heat, and said he made some adjustments during the team’s bye week.  But he says he can’t make things any simpler.

“We’ve been simpler this year than we’ve been in seven years,”
Bratkowski said via Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer. “The reason we did it was because we’ve got some new
parts in there.”

If the Bengals look like a group that hasn’t practiced much together, it’s for a good reason.   Chad Ochocinco was taping reality shows all offseason. So was Terrell Owens, before he signed late with the Bengals.  Rookies Jordan Shipley and Jermaine Gresham play big roles.

Cincinnati has a tough matchup this week in Atlanta to avoid going 2-4.  Ochocinco hasn’t done much the last four games, but he says it only takes one touch to turn his confidence around.

“There’s something about touching the ball that’s really cool,”
Ochocinco said. “It’s like meeting a girl and she calls you for the
first time, you just feel really good about yourself, you know? It’s
like a little confidence booster, that’s all. It’s not much that I
need.”

Anyone remember when the Bengals posted back to back winning seasons after the fans talked an unnecessary amount of crap? Yea me neither.

The poor man’s cowboys? How DARE you!? Lol

Thank god they’ve still got the Ravens’ number!

  4. ParkerFly says: Oct 22, 2010 9:09 AM

Bratkowski is not the problem, the receivers are.

    Stupid is as stupid does.

ParkerFly- Are you serious? Bratkowski is every bit of the problem. The man has had one successful offensive year. That’s it. If the offense is as simple as it gets and we’re still making this many penalties, coaching changes need to be made and it starts at the top. Bratkowski is awful and should have been gone years ago. But unfortunately Mike Brown loves him so he’s not going anywhere.

Here’s to the Bengals signing more cylons so they can understand projection.

Bob Bratkowski should have been fired 7 years ago. He’s the reason this team stay mediocre every year. The only great season (2005) the offense had was because of how many turnover the defense created. In turn – the offense scored more often because of all the scoring oportunities.

  13. Fat_Old_Sun says: Oct 22, 2010 9:38 AM

Bratkowski and oline is the reason 100% hands down.
Brat should have been let go years ago.

  14. Birdbrainsnj says: Oct 22, 2010 9:45 AM

Except they still have more wins then the cowboys.

    Are you an idiot?
If you’re Owens, what are you supposed to do when no team wants you?????????????????????????
Is he supposed to draw up a “pretend playbook” and run its designed routes??????
His only other options were doing reality TV and playing basketball to keep in shape, which he mentioned to Stephen A. Smith, George Lopez, and the Cincinnati media at his 1st press conference as a Bengal.
Wow! I’m so shocked to see another wide receiver hating article. Could your crap be any more biased???????
You never mention Carson Palmer. Palmer is at most fault (unfortunately) because he and Jake Delhomme are proving us that Tommy John Surgery for quarterbacks doesn’t work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Rosenthal, next time you write an article like this change your name to Boomer Esaison because only he will coddle quarterbacks that played on his former teams and criticize wide receivers more!!!!!

LOL!!! That is so true. I also remember T.J Whosyourmama and Ocho Stinko running smack about a changing of the guard in the AFC North back in 2005 when the Bungels won late in the season in Pittsburgh.
Fast Forward to 2010……The Steelers have added 2 more Lombardi Trophies to their collection, and the Bumgals haven’t even notched a playoff win!!!!!!
But, on the bright side……they do have two diva wideouts, who are way past their prime……and two reality shows!!! Baaaaaahaaaaaaahaaaaaaaa.
What losers TO and Ocho are. They will both be broke within 5 years of retirement, and TO isn’t even man enough to be a father to his children. Loser

  18. BengalsDouche2 says: Oct 22, 2010 10:17 AM

hey rabais2- you do realize that Palmer didn’t have TJ surgery right? he opted not to and a lot of folks believe that’s why he’s struggling. Although I do agree that a lot of the blame is on Palmer, it’s not b/c TJ surgery failed to work b/c he didn’t have it.

  19. Scott P says: Oct 22, 2010 10:18 AM

It’s not happening for Marvin Lewis. He’s a great guy, but it’s not happening. They made the decision to roll the dice on troublesome players but too many together in one locker room just can’t work. The Bengals, once again, need new direction. Palmer has a couple more years of top-level QB play available but soon enough that window will be closed. Ocho-idiot is extremely overrated and TO is done. Benson is almost done. At somepoint it has to be realized that the Bungles are not reaching any great levels and there needs to be a makeover, again.

  20. jvw says: Oct 22, 2010 10:23 AM

Carson Palmer is the problem……..The most over rated QB in the league…..Stop throwing the ball 40 times a game and you might have a chance to win some games…….

I agree with you, Mike Brown is the main person to blame. But you have to give him credit for putting pieces in place (Marvin Lewis). Although, he failed majorly by going back to some of his old habits, to hold onto Brat for far too long (and signing players Marvin did not want). Now we’re in a position where Lewis will leave, and while I like Zimmer a lot, he will become Brown’s Puppet and the team will be 2-14 within two years.

  23. FriarBob says: Oct 22, 2010 10:34 AM

Bob Bratkowski also can’t get any dumber, or he’ll turn into a potted plant.

  24. graphx says: Oct 22, 2010 10:41 AM

Either the routes they’re running are wrong or it’s bad play design. For instance, look at the route on Palmer’s last interception when it bounced off Chad’s hands. Jermaine Gresham was too close to Chad dragging his man towards him. If he is running a clear out he needs to be gone by the time Chad comes across the middle. Chad would have probably been killed by Gresham’s man. Same thing for the Shipley play. There was nobody trying to influence TJ Ward out of the center of the field.

  25. EdgeRusher says: Oct 22, 2010 10:51 AM

palmer is over rated….Ocho is washed up and T.O is an ego maniac who is a huge cancer in the locker room….trust me I know…….The Bengals need to start over like the rams did and get a new coach

  26. HolyMoly says: Oct 22, 2010 10:54 AM

Ahem. Stats do not lie. Jermaine Gresham and Jordan Shipley are NOT playing big roles. If they were, this would be good news because it would mean that Carson Palmer were spreading the ball around. As it stands, Jordan Shipley is only averaging about 35 yards per game and Jermaine Gresham is averaging close to the same.

  27. YepHello says: Oct 22, 2010 10:56 AM

I find it hard to believe that 11 men are too stupid to run a simple offense. Isn’t the simplest answer usually the right one, which in this case would be that the one guy that is drawing up the plays is in the wrong, rather than the 11 guys that are failing to execute them properly. FYI, TO is on pace for 1500 yards this year, so I’m not sure what evidence there is to suggest he is “done” or “overrated”.

  28. BengalsDouche2 says: Oct 22, 2010 11:13 AM

Yeah all this BS about T.O. being overrated is getting old. Carson Palmer is highly overrated yet T.O. is still putting up numbers even having Palmer being the QB. T.O. is one of the few good things about this team right now. T.O., Shipley, Gresham and Benson are the 4 big guys on our offense at this point. Now if only CP can be more accurate and our O-line can stop being stupid, we’d be golden.

  29. Lucky5927 says: Oct 22, 2010 11:18 AM

Falcons are overrated. With a little consistency, Bengals will win this one.

  30. shaunypoo says: Oct 22, 2010 11:21 AM

    There are multiple problems:
    1. Carson has lost it. He was talked about as a top 5 talent, and rightfully so, but injuries and fear have caused the intangibles to dry up, and his elbow is still crap.
    2. Bratkowski got figured out years ago. He had a great O-line in 2005 anchored by Anderson. Unfortunately, except for the shift to running last season, he has bye and large had the same playbook. I want to punch my wife in the face every time he calls a screen play on 3rd and 15.
    3. Mike Brown. Nuff said.
    4. Lack of intelligence. Most of the players have immense talent, but are about as smart as a bag of hammers. New England won on brains more than talent. A great coach helps, but the players on the field have to be smart enough to run what you want, offensively and defensively, to have any success.
There are lots of minor problems that are contributing, but I think most of them can be put under one of more of the aforementioned categories.

We’re talking about the Bengals, here, folks. What did you think you would really get? Bad owner, bad uniforms and a mishmash of has beens and never wases.

Are you sure that wasn’t said by Shaun Smith?

    Simply stop F^@#ing up!

@ Scott P, Benson is still in his latetwenties and doesn’t have a ton of mileage yet, can’t agree with you that he is almost done. Most of your other comments were spot on though.
@ everyone else: I say this every year, win or lose. It’s not easy to be a Bengals fan. Year in and year out, we are subject to immense disappointment because our ownership is poop. But what do we do? Stop going to football games? Cheer for another team when this has been who you have cheered for all your life? I know it’s a game and it’s sometimes silly what we all do and say, but try being a fan of a shitty team before you run your mouth about Bengals fans. It’s easy to be a Ravens fan, a steelers or a cowboys fan (sometimes). Don’t be so quick to judge a Bengals fan till you walk a mile in our shoes. And as you run your mouth as a keyboard badass, I’ll invite everyone like I did last year. Get in touch with me when your team comes to town, come tailgate with us, sit at the game with us, and see that were fans of the game just like everyone else, we just have to endure the wrath of a team that can’t put it together. Longworth Hall and Section 303 every home game, win or lose; some weeks in a gorilla suit; why not!
