Big Ben claims he had the ball in the end zone

We plan to address in detail during the Week Seven Monday 10-pack the play that arguably decided the Steelers-Dolphins game.

According to Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, we shouldn’t bother.

Ben claims that he had possession the ball in the end zone, and that he surrendered it only after he was told he had scored.

Unfortunately, Roethlisberger’s version of the events conflicts directly with, you know, reality as depicted by the video of the play.

That is a cute choice of words Florio. I don’t know if you are actually stupid and don’t understand what Ben meant, or if you are just trying to push buttons. Ben was saying that AFTER he fumbled, under the pile, he had control of the ball. You are trying to imply he is saying he didn’t fumble at all. This is why new media will never replace old media.
He clearly fumbled before scoring, and the rule the ref cited is one that needs to be changed. I’m not sure how though.

  9. Katmanduu says: Oct 24, 2010 8:27 PM

Gee Florio….you mean to tell me you know FOR SURE that Ben didn’t have the ball at the bottom of the scrum? I looked at the replay several times, and it’s hard to determine who had the ball after the so-called fumble. Ben very well could have had it. IMO, there wasn’t enough evidence to overturn the TD to begin with. We needed to see the opposite angle and never got to see it.
In any event, Dolphin fans learned that FGs instead of TDs will get you beat everytime.

    Hey Florio,
Since you claim that you read the rules…let’s see how you address your sensationalism with the following:
NFL Official explanation of Roethlisberger goal line fumble
NFL Head Referee Gene Steratore – Pool Report
(Explanation that he said on the field) – “Naturally the ruling on the field was a touchdown by Pittsburgh. After review it was confirmed in replay that the ball did come loose and it was a fumble prior to the ball breaking the goal line. That’s where we go into the second aspect of that. In order to overturn this and give another team the football, I have to have clear video evidence of the team recovering the fumble. So when a little short segment of what I said out there. That is what I explained. We did have a fumble, but we did not have video evidence and a confirmation on who recovered the football so we changed an aspect of the play by not awarding Pittsburgh the touchdown. Miami is not charged a time out because we changed an aspect of that play, but we could not award the defense in this situation the football because we don’t have video evidence of the defense recovering the ball.”
(On why it was not determined who recovered the fumble) – “It is a pile of bodies in there and you don’t have a clear recovery.”
(On if it is protocol to determine who recovered the fumble regardless of the whistle) – “Anytime that you have a fumble or if would be ruled a touchdown or down by contact or situation where we have ruled a play ended and a team challenges that in fact it was a fumble. Both aspects of that ruling have to be video confirmed in order for us to turn the ball over a) that it was a fumble before down by contact or touchdown in this case and b) a clear recovery by the defense in order to award them the football.”
(On if there was a reason to determine who recovered the fumble in live action as opposed to during the review) – “In live action, the ruling was touchdown.”
(On why it was not determined who recovered the fumble at the time of the play) – “Because the ruling was a touchdown.”
(On if it was not until that it was determined that it was not a touchdown can you go forward with the process of determining who recovered the fumble) – “When you have a challenge, naturally you are challenging the ruling on the field which was a touchdown so when we go into replay, we find out in fact that it was in fact a fumble prior to the ball breaking the plane, but we have to continue with that aspect and find a clear recovery by the defense in order to reward them the ball.”
(On if mentioned on the field anything about two to three camera angles) – “No. I didn’t mention anything about angles ever. No.”
(On if he could not determine who recovered the ball) – “We confirmed that there was a fumble and were not able to confirm a clear recovery by the defense.”
I bet you will selectively bypass the “rules” because it reduces your tabloid capabilities.
    DaveD

What are you talking about Florio??? He was in there when the ball was fumbled. There was no clear evidence of a recovery. Just because there were 2 Dolphins around the ball, doesn’t mean that they recovered it. Their arms were next to it, but they didn’t scoop it up. If Ben had the ball, it should have been a Steeler touchdown. Only the ball carrier may advance a forward fumble, so the Steelers were screwed. The rest of you are in denial. Even if the ball goes back to the 20 with the Dolphins in possession, the Steelers still had 3 time outs and the 2 minute warning to make a stop. You saw how the Dolphins handled that circumstance. The Steelers would have still had a minute thirty to get a field goal.

  19. td386steel says: Oct 24, 2010 8:35 PM

BS Florio. The video doesn’t show a thing. How in the hell do you know what happened Ben’s got a ref jabbing him in the side telling him the play was over and td. Then after Ben gets up the dolphins come out of the pile with the ball. If the Dolphins had the dam ball why didn’t they stand up long before that? Reason? MIAMI DIDN’T HAVE THE DAM BALL OR THEY WOULD HAVE!!

Actually what he said was that he wasn’t down after the hit which conveys he thought he had possession of the ball after the hit. He clearly did not.

  26. ohmygato says: Oct 24, 2010 8:45 PM

Even the announcers asked why they just didnt watch the replay and see who came out of the pile with the ball.
Of course the problem was that they whistled the play dead (sound familiar?) so they cant get an official decision. I figure that if a team fumbles into the end zone and due to circumstances no team is able to take possession it should be treated like the ball going out of bounds.
Its like this, a team is running and has a clear TD however the ball is punched out of the end zone, its first down at the twenty for the defending team. But when Big Ben fumbles into the end zone, they whistle the play dead and give it to them for another try.

  27. FinfanJim says: Oct 24, 2010 8:46 PM

Ben would make Barney Frank proud with his admittance and then denial only a short time later.
And, again, to all those saying the refs had no recourse but to call it Pittsburgh ball: The ref did not have to blow the play dead. The play should’ve been determined on the field as a TD but also possession of the potential fumble should’ve been determined in case that line judge wasn’t omniscient.
Guess what? The entire officiating crew blew it and didn’t follow the league suggested opinion of not blowing the play dead.

I will address DaveD as he seems to miss the friggin point altogether – the officials screwed up so their explanation is screwed up as well
    1. the head lineman and head official BOTH reside in Pittsburgh
    2. the head linesman should never have signaled TD – because he NEVER saw the ball cross the plane – when he first saw the ball from his angle, it was loose in the endzone – he ASSUMED it was a TD –
    3. since NO OFFICIAL actually saw the ball cross the plane – they should have let the play continue until the Miami linebacker produced the ball!

I think it is funny that all of you who claim Ben is a rapist seem to forget what our country’s judicial system states “INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY”. So you can speculate all you’d like, the fact of the matter is that he wasn’t found guilty of anything. On top of that NONE OF YOU were at the night club that night. The truth is that you are all jealous, jealous that your team’s QB doesn’t hold as many records as Ben or that your team just isn’t as good as the Steelers. You call us a Classless organization yet you forget all the Rooney’s have done to help advance the NFL. I chuckle at your feeble attempts to rationalize, in your own mind, your hatred for us. Face the Facts, we win games because we FINISH games. For all you Dolphin fans, hey perhaps if you didn’t crumble like feta cheese every time you entered the red zone, you coulda put up a TD or two and won. Start looking at your own team to express your hatred for how things didn’t turn out in your favor rather than play the blame game

So much complaining when the Steelers win by the crybabies. You dopes say that Steeler fans whine and complain when we lose, but to me only a very very small fraction do that. Meanwhile, when we win, you show just how jealous and bitter you are by coming up with the conspiracy theories and every other reason other than the best team won. I guess Obama is in on it too, huh?
While I agree it was an unfortunate set of circumstances in a really good close game in which the Dolphins played pretty well, it was only one play. There was a whole football game that was played. Dolphins couldn’t move the ball after having getting 2 giftwrapped fumbles around the red zone at the beginning of the game. And they couldn’t move the ball at the end of the game. If they would have been able to score more points, they would have won. They didn’t.
As well, when I watched the slomo of the play, it looks to me like Ben’s arm is in fact starting to reach out towards the ball as he lunges after the ball, then everyone piles on top, and then you can’t tell exactly what happened. If any of you were actually in that scrum, then I guess you can say whether Ben was right or wrong. Otherwise, you are all acting like babies. So STFU.
The game is over, the Steelers and Ben won, he threw for 300 yards in only his second game back when the Steelers couldn’t run the ball, and we are 5-1. I suggest you get over it.
    GO STEELERS!!

I didn’t get this call…if he didn’t clearly score, and ball was loose, they can’t just put it back on the 1 yard line and back to the Steelers. If the Steelers had control of the ball in the endzone, it’s a TD. If it’s not recovered by the Steelers, it’s Dolphins ball at the 20…not a do-over at the 1.

Miami Fans don’t waste your time fighting with Steelers fans. They have had lots of practice at making excuses to justify their NFL aided wins. Through the years they have developed a three-step process.
STEP 1: Explain to other fans why they don’t understand the rules.
STEP 2: Tell offended fans of the other team that if said team played better it would not have come down to that.
STEP 3: Fabricate examples of how the refs have screwed them but they were able to overcome.
Does anybody else think if the shoe were on the other foot it would have been called the same way? Just take solace in the fact that every other fan in the NFL knows you got screwed.

  84. 305phinphan says: Oct 24, 2010 10:53 PM

Rapistberger is full of shize. He said when Clemmons hit his hand/arm it felt like it broke and was numb yet 2 sec. later he says he used that same arm/hand to cradle the football. How many times will you see a fumble and also see the player that gets it in the pile right away? I have seen numerous fumbles where the ball comes out and the refs have to pull those bodies upon bodies off each other to see who has the ball and the team that does gets possession. Francis had the ball when everyone was out of the pile and numerous Dolphin players said two of the refs were calling it Miami’s ball. This is a perfect example as to why the NFL is a joke. Stop worrying about what the players are doing and worry more about these crummy refs that are costing teams wins. Why don’t these refs get finned or suspended for making horrific calls? To all of the Steeler fans saying you don’t win with FG’S blah blah blah…….we were wining with FG’S before that terrible call. Don’t worry it’s only a matter of time before your lying QB has yet ANOTHER sleezy moment with a young women and he gets put in prison where he should already be.

The Steelers lead the league in fans who derive 100% of their self worth from the performance of the team their parents taught them to worship.

The fault clearly lies with the officials, they blew the call.

    Here you go steeler fans…..
    ————————————————
I live in San Diego and would like nothing more than the Steelers to lose a game on a massive choke like this game could’ve been, but I’m also a football official and no matter how much your slanted “opinion” as a Dolphin fan wants to say that’s “clear possession”, you obviously have no clue about real football rules. There’s no way you can give possession to the Dolphins based on the video in that picture; if you think you can, I feel sorry for you.
It sucks when your team blows a game and even more when it’s apparently the “fault” of the officials, but it’s been said many times before…TAKE CARE OF YOUR OWN BUSINESS AND DON’T LET YOURSELF BE PUT IN POSITION TO HAVE A GAME COME DOWN TO A CALL LIKE THIS. The Dolphins were handed the ball inside the 25-yard line twice and walked away with 2 FG’s, in addition to 3 other FG’s that could’ve iced the game had any one of them been turned into a TD.
Win the game yourself and stop blaming the officials when you let the other team walk all the way down the field and things don’t go your way on a lucky crazy fluke play like this. If he hadn’t fumbled and had just been stopped at the 1, the game would’ve ended exactly the same way, it’s not like the defender made a tremendous skillful play to force the fumble, Roethlisberger was diving in midair trying to be a hero and hit the defender’s elbow and fumbled. Only 1 Dolphin player even reacted saying it was Miami’s ball, and immediately he looked dejected as if Pittsburgh had the ball, so it’s not nearly as cut and dry as all Dolphin fans want it to be.

Secondly, yeah it’s nice to know that the people who hate Ben (8MAN) also wish that because of the Steelers win today some random girl ends up being sexually assaulted. The fans on here who like the ‘PHINS are all pissed because their team couldn’t capitalize on TWO GOLDEN opportunities. THE OTHER haters are the ones who can’t stand the fact that we have been a dominant force to be reckoned with in the AFC for the majority of the past decade. I wonder how many ravens fans are on here calling ben a rapist, while knowing Ray Lewis once actually did settle out of court for his involvement in TWO murders

  94. Juice says: Oct 24, 2010 11:17 PM

    @habman
You must busiest man on the planet since you went out and polled EVERY SINGLE NFL fan on if they support Roethlisberger and would also allow him in a 20 mile radius of their daughter/ sister. Then, unbelievably, you found time to get to know and hang out with the likes of Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and other big name QB’s. You’re just like that Dos Equis guy!
I can go on for days with the stories Ive heard from: my ex who is a Colts cheerleader, my brother who worked for an NFL agent, and a few of my friends that work in the NFL that all have a common denominator of Peyton (and a few other QB’s) being well known womanizers and assholes. Not saying that makes Bens actions warranted, but dont be so naive either and act like hes the only high profile player that gets caught with his pants down (see: Farve, Brett) and is a prick behind the scenes. Most are. Way to turn opinion into fact though my man, really helps you win arguments against anyone 16 years old and younger. My nephew does the same thing.
Didnt mean to get off topic but ignorance needs to be addressed.
Why do fans all of a sudden GO BLIND when calls dont go their way? This call is obviously debatable, and I understand Fins fans being pissed as its a pretty rare play. BUT, one thing that is obvious is that there are TWO Dolphins players on that pile, ALONG WITH THREE Steeler players (Ben, Jon Scott, and Legursky). It is definitely not CLEAR who has the ball since there are a total of FIVE PLAYERS WITH A COMBINED WEIGHT OF 1,200 POUNDS all fighting for the ball (see: Ian Whetstone’s previous post for proof). It could have gone either way.
Even with that said, the Fins had the ball with 2:30 left, THREE timeouts, and needing to drive about 50 yards to get into field goal range to win the game. Henne sucks though so their fans are mad at the Steelers. Ryan Fitzpatrick for the o-5 Bills had that same drill today with 40 seconds less and only 1 timeout and got the job done on the road against the Ravens #2 defense to send the game into OT, but you haters are so accurate when saying the ‘refs’ not the Steelers great defense ‘won’ that game for them. Know your football. If my Aunt had balls, she’d be my Uncle. So throw the woulda coulda shoulda argument out the window haters. Every team has to deal with questionable calls, injuries, and plenty of obstacles in this league. Thus is life in the NFL.
5-1 — feels pretty good over here! Suck it!

    ————————————————–
Did Ben fumble? Absolutely yes, he even said that he fumbled it. Watch the tape of the play, I just watched it 4 times in my NFL Game Pass, and I see the ball, obviously come out before the TD no questions. Then two Dolphins jump towards the ball, but do not cover, only their arms are resting on the ball. Then, Ben jumps in between them and wraps his arm over the ball. None of those actions prove possession though, but the rule states that is there is simultaneous possession between an offensive and defensive player, the benefit goes to the offense. So in all honesty, if the play was allowed to run, it probably would have been a Pittsburgh TD, because of simultaneous possession.
As for the writing of this post by Florio, it is extremely irresponsible reporting. First, Ben never said that he broke the plane. Secondly, No one , but Ben and the two defenders actually know who had the ball and as stated before simultaneous possession goes to the offense. Get it straight before posting very irresponsible reports. I am a professional writer and I would be embarrassed for this “report” to be on my site.

And to all the Steelers fans who say The Dolphins shouldn’t have let the game come down to that should remember that their team also let the game come down to that. They simply got the lucky call.

On the field, the ref saw a touchdown and saw a Dolphins player come up with the ball.
In the instant replay booth, the ref saw a fumble and didn’t see who came up with the ball.
You can’t have it both ways–you can’t use half of what was seen on the field and half of what was seen in the booth. It’s all or nothing.

Exactly. Your team’s coach has the right idea when he said it was three quarters of play, not one reviewed play, that sealed the loss for Miami.
Prepare for Week 8, and mentally move on.

“I mean, we ended up taking the ball down the field; it was a matter of not getting touchdowns. We were getting field goals out of some of those. I felt like at that point we needed a field goal. I felt strongly that we’d be able to move the ball and that we had enough time. I was just trying to play on the positive. I think they were pretty focused; we just couldn’t make a play there.”
Funny to see how you fin fans can’t even agree with your coach. Pburgh handed you guys the ball twice in the first half, both times easily within TD range. When it came down to it , our defense did what they were supposed to do, not allow a TD after a turnover.
Learn to move on, I’m sure you’ll never grow up and will always find some reason to hate Pittsburgh because life is just so unfair to everyone who isn’t a Pittsburgh fan. Maybe your team wouldn’t be in positions like this if Jenny From The Block wasn’t partial owner

It doesn’t matter Mr. Florio if Ben had possession of the ball at the bottom of the pile or not. The officials decided correctly that since possession could not be determined the ball reverts back to the team that originally had possession of the ball.
With 5:34 left in the game, I thought Coach Sporrano was celebrating a bit early when Miami took the lead. Miami played well. Almost well enough to win.
    GO STEELERS!
    __________________________
+1 if you do not convert at least one of the two turnovers in the beginning than you have nobody to fault but yourself. Miami had their chances, the ref did nothing to make Miami lose. Ben had a sloppy game with 3 fumbles on the road and the Fins let the Steelers hang in there.

    @js136202 and DSC …
You’ve misread my posts. I know he didn’t cross the plane. I know it wasn’t a touchdown. I know he fumbled. Never said otherwise.
The line judge signaled TD and blew the play dead. The play ended before the pileon. Ball would go back to the last team to have possession. First and goal Steelers on the six-inch line. If you argue the play continued into the endzone, none of the footage aired during the game showed ANYONE coming up w/the ball. It showed Dolphins pointing–meaning nothing.
When Roethlisberger said he had the ball, Florio implied he was lying and I questioned Ben. But last night on NBC, they aired footage from the endzone camera. Ben did reach in and wrap up the ball before the pileon just as he said. I felt guilty for doubting his word because I had no reason to–that’s why I jumped on Florio.
It’s absolutely possible that Ben had the ball at the bottom of that pile. Look at the endzone film before condeming me as a homer. I’m sorry for both teams that the game ended in controversy. But the refs made the only call they could based on the film. And no matter what happened on the field, it doesn’t change the evidence in Ben’s legal cases. It’s infantile to bring up that nonsense when arguing a football point–the refuge of bad losers who don’t have enough football knowledge to argue the merits of the call.

    @reality police …
As I’ve posted before, I am a crucial member of the Steelers organization: a fan. In fact, I’ve been with the organization longer than anyone on the field. Without me, and thousands like me, there would be no stadiums, no merchandising, no multi-billion-dollar television contracts, no multi-million-dollar players salaries. I do not play for the team … the team plays for me. So yes, I use the term “we.”
But no, sweets, I do not require the Steelers to provide my self-worth. Like many Steelers fans, I’m quite accomplished in my own right. Actually, we make a nice pair :)
However, if your self-worth revolves around your football team … well, that explains your bitterness.

  130. Holeinone09 says: Oct 25, 2010 12:29 PM

As I also said yesterday here, the video clearly showed Ben reaching and lunging for the ball before many started to pile on. If you can’t see that you are blind. When the refs told players it was a TD, that would be cause for players to forget about trying to get the ball. Don’t blame the Steelers for the refs’ call at that point.
Maybe the NFL should just hire full-time refs who might get more of the calls correct at the time, instead of after the fact. But maybe not.
But who cares, the game is over. Quit cryin’, the Steelers won.
    GO STEELERS!!

The serial rapist shouldn’t even be in the NFL much less on camera lying about recoving the ball.
He should be locked up behind bars somewhere.
If the serial rapist played for any team not called the Steelers, Patriots or Cowboys he would be suspended a year minimum.

Also all you ‘Fin fans who hate anything Pittsburgh, it must twist your insides to know that the best QB in ‘Fin history is a Pittsburgh native. You’re just like all the Cardinal fans who hated on the Steelers after Superbowl XLIII. They too forgot that the only reason why they made it that far was due to the skills of players and coaches affiliated with Pittsburgh (Larry Fitzgerald, Clark Haggans, Brian St. Pierre, Jerame Tuman, Russ Grimm, Ken Whisenhunt, Sean Morey, Steve Breaston, Reggie Wells, and Gerald Hayes)
Let’s look at your current ‘Fins who also have an affiliation with the Steel City (Lousaka Polite, Patrick Cobbs, Brandon Marshall, and Kacy Rodgers)
You are all probably too doped up, from going to one of the “pain management clinics” on every corner in your state to get your oxy, to even remember such valid information as listed above.

@ Florios’Lawyer and all Stealer fans,
The reality of it is that the whistle blew prematurely.
The idiot ref who called TD (is he the homer ref who should never be assigned to Stealer games?) hesitated before the call.
He seemed to think instead of react.
Thus the whole idea of a “cheating” call.
The Stealers always seem to get the benefit of the doubt. Who knows why?
But in this case the ref’s hesitation and then the WRONG call changed the outcome of the game. That sucks for everyone who favors fair play!!!
All I know is the films do not show that Ben had the ball.
The films show me a host of white Jerseys all over the ball and Ben jumping on late.
Had the whistle not blown it is clear to me that Miami gets the ball, and likely the game.
It would take a classy fan to admit that.
I do not expect to hear that from any Squealer fans!

  134. CincyAllDaWay says: Oct 25, 2010 12:51 PM

Alright, this BS has to stop! Anyone, including most brain dead Steelers fans can see from the replays that Ben fumbeled the ball and it was not a touchdown. Most have acknowledged that. As bad as I can’t stand the Steelers, Miami and their fans have no one to blame for a lose other than their team! They had multiple trips to the endzone and couldn’t get it done. If they had scored TD’s on half of the field goals they settled for they would have one the game. No ones fault but their own. Was it a bad call, yeah probably so. Get over it! it happens every Sunday. If the Fins had done more to win the game they would have, end of story!

    Yeah, he learned his lesson.
This is the Stealer Tuck Rule. I am guessing those Refs have a line to Vegas in that review booth. I suspect a majority of bets are placed on the Steelers, which is what creates this result. I want to know how many other errors are made by the Refs in favor of the Steelers where the cameras aren’t pointed? How about Holding, Helmet to helmet? I know in just the Ravens games it is flagrant.

@ Florios’Lawyer and all Stealer fans,
“The reality of it is that the whistle blew prematurely.”
    – you’re damn right it did.
“The idiot ref who called TD … hesitated before the call.”
    – I didn’t see any hesitation at all, in fact it looked like he really jumped the gun, which as it turned out is exactly what happened.
“He seemed to think instead of react.”
    – No, it appeared he reacted *before* thinking. See point #2 above.
“Thus the whole idea of a “cheating” call.”
    – So you’re saying the ref is the one who cheated? Interesting take on it, but OK.
“The Stealers always seem to get the benefit of the doubt. ”
    – you need to watch Steelers game more often then. If you did, you’d know how wrong that statement is…
“All I know is the films do not show that Ben had the ball.”
So? What difference does it make who wound up with the ball a full minute after the play was whistled dead and after many players had already started walking away as a result?
“Had the whistle not blown it is clear to me that Miami gets the ball, and likely the game. It would take a classy fan to admit that.”
You are right, had the whistle NOT blown.
    But the whistle DID blow.
    Does this make me classy?

Using “usless” and “lawyer” in the same sentence is redundant. That’s the same as using pious, egotistical, scum bag, or douche bag in the same sentence.
Some of them will even tell use “anyone who understands football as well as I do” as a disclaimer before they layout their pious, egotistical statement. I suppose though that some people might look at that statement and credit it to a skank who just loves to pretend that she is important.

  139. praveen says: Oct 25, 2010 3:35 PM

Ben did put his hand on the ball at the very end of the scrum. So he wasnt lying. People need to check the replays properly before posting blog items read by man. But I believe one of the Dolphins had a better reach on the ball and Dolphins would have gotten possession even if the play wasn’t deemed over after the TD signal.
The correct thing would have been for the Dolphins to start a drive at their 20 with 2:30 left. Considering how conservative their coaches were , and how the Steelers defense generally plays better when they are not protecting a slim lead at the end of games, I think they go all out to make Dolphins punt on a 3 and out(I was surprised they managed to get the Dolphins on a 4 and out at the end). Steelers probably get the ball back at their 30 or 35 with 2 min left. While the Steelers had red zone problems, I don’t think their offense would have a problem with 4 downs available in getting back into FG range.
Still, Miami got robbed of a chance to defend their lead. No doubt about that.

  140. CliveRush says: Oct 25, 2010 4:01 PM

Only the players can lose games, except for the Vikings and Chilly. The ref make mistakes yes, but players are the ones who are responsible for the final score.

Yeah, he’s such a dynamite character that we should believe him.
But, if the refs were in on a fix, they would have awarded the TD. Reed’s missed more kicks than Ben has sorority parties this year.

  142. Deb says: Oct 25, 2010 4:39 PM

    @satchboogie …
There should be a law against bitter fans who react to a loss by posting bald-faced lies that have nothing to do with football. Andrea McNulty sent texts the next morning telling people how much she wanted to see Roethlisberger again; they’re on file w/the court. The Georgia accuser’s medical exam showed there was no intercourse–that means she wasn’t raped. Because you’re a little pissant who can’t take a loss does not make the opposing QB a rapist.
    @praveen …
Ben hit the plane as he was hit by the defender as the line judge signaled TD and blew the play dead as the ball popped free.
The ball was fumbled … no touchdown … BUT the whistle was blown.
In American football, that means the play was DEAD. THAT is the rule.
By RULE, the ball goes to the last team to have possession, at the spot of the fumble.
Pittsburgh ball on the six-inch line. First and goal Steelers.
The ref did exactly what he should have done, as you would know if you understood the rules.
Even if the play had continued into the end zone, Roethlisberger got an arm around it before the Dolphins piled on. That was clearly shown on the end zone footage. No footage showed anyone with the ball when the pile unscrambled, so there’s no scenario outside your head that would have given the Dolphins the ball on the 20. It is unfortunate that you didn’t watch the footage and learn the rules before commenting.
@CincyAllDaWay … Amen, but I get a lil pissy when they don’t post my earlier comments. Seems my obscenity-free stuff can’t make it, but slander (rapist rapist rapist) is just fine.

  143. Kansas says: Oct 25, 2010 6:07 PM

The video does not show the dolphins landing on the ball in total control, touching and having possession are to entirely different scenarios.
If you watch the whole video you will see Roethlisberger getting his hand on the football as well as 2 other Steelers. There really is no way to determine who had the ball, although a Dolphin came up with the ball out of the scrum the play was already over and called a touchdown. There was no reason for any Steeler to continue pursuing for or holding onto the football.
It is obvious there are individuals who write on this website that lack intelligence of the rules as well as legal law. It should be horrifying for any man to be accused of rape when there is lack of any evidence and the confusion and altering testimony of the accuser, before one makes an accusation..look into the evidence, watch and or read the testimonies.
To continue to call a man a rapist just because you might not like the person or the team he plays for is incongruous. You all suck! :-)

  144. openfieldtackle says: Oct 25, 2010 8:28 PM

THE WHISTLE BLEW…. Meaning the play was dead.
This is the rule from Pee Wee football to the NFL.
Ben crossed the goal line then the whistle stopped all play calling it a DEAD BALL except anyone ignoring the whistle… which you saw in the end zone.
It was called a touchdown. If there is a challenge the rule is you can’t fumble forward and the ball is placed at the spot of the fumble.
RESULTING in Steeler ball at the spot of the fumble.
People are calling for a SAFER NFL with less violence… there you have it. You can’t have it both ways!

  145. urworstnitemare says: Oct 26, 2010 12:34 PM

You whimpering babies. Always the refs that are cheating. I also think that since you all know so more than the investigating law enforcement professionals, that either you need to give that evidence to them so they can file charges or maybe just go back to watching your cop shows and crying because your team loses and you need to make up something to make your simple little minds feel better.

  146. 18ALLDAY says: Oct 26, 2010 12:46 PM

I wouldn’t doubt that Ben had the ball and the refs and their bumbling, stumbling, mumbling selfs were yelling black’s ball, black’s ball! It is the same thing that happened in last years Super Bowl after the onside kick. There is plenty of video showing the refs yelling blue’s ball, blue’s ball , blue’s ball. Then when good ole Hank comes up out of the pile all of a sudden the Saints are awarded the ball. I know refereeing is tough but the refs have steadily gotten worse over the past 3-4 years.

  147. WaltColeman says: Oct 26, 2010 9:14 PM

I watch a lot of football games for all teams. When was the last time instant replay was used to figure out who had possession at the end of a fumble? Never. They fight it out until somebody comes away with the ball – the dolphins. The only time I have ever seen replay a scrum to find ball possession is on a fumble that goes out of bounds. Then whey want to determine if anybody ever had possession or who had it last. When it goes to a scrum, it is ALWAYS who comes away with the ball. Otherwise..what fumble recovery is ever clean that could easily establish who recovered it. It is always a mass of people diving in, etc. This is the Steeler Tuck Rule. Fabricated rules to give the Stealers the win. Vegas Baby!

  148. Tobias Jodter says: Oct 26, 2010 10:42 PM

Ya know, I have to comment for what seems like the 10 thousandth time – people are being swayed by the anti-Steeler Network Announcers.
Dan Dierdorf – notorious Steeler-hater was once again planting his little digs against the Steelers every time they were the beneficiaries of any call during the game. It’s nauseating to listen to these guys – Heath Miller gets body slammed 3 seconds after the play is completely over – right in front of the sideline ref – and Dierdorf inexplicably tries to imply it was a bad call.
That’s typical. And all these casual fans with no knowledge of football buy into these subtle suggestions. It all started with the bitter and divisive John Madden in Super Bowl XL.
I could rattle off a long long laundry list of close calls – both good and bad – that went against the Steelers over the last 10 years. It’s freaking football.
But for some reason the National Media seems to despise the Steelers and they run with every story like this as if there was no tomorrow. According to NFL Network commercials this was the “most controversial play of the season”. WTF? This was a routine close call that happens every week. Please, someone tell me why the national media hates the Steelers so rabidly? Could it have anything to do with 6 Super Bowls wins?

SHUT UP ABOUT ANDREA and that other chick. NOBODY is going to change their minds about this human skank that can’t even hold the football. Your attempts are totally in vain. Poor little Ben. Oh and no one is really surprised that the officials are in the pockets of the Steelers….. Watch any Steeler game and see for yourself. Just two weeks ago they let Harrison head hunt all game and never threw a flag. It was a tight game and one of those 15 yarders could have turned the tide in the favor of the Browns.
