Like old times: Favre's passes to Packers make the difference

It lived up to the hype.

Take away the fan hatred, the off-field distractions, the injuries, the tired storylines, and you had a fantastically entertaining, hard-fought, and occasionally sloppy football game on Sunday night.

You had a 41-year-old Hall of Fame quarterback falling to the ground with the entire game on the line, getting up and tossing the ball 25 yards to the Hall of Fame wide receiver ready to leap for the potential game-winning score.

For the second straight play, the ball sailed over Randy Moss’ head. The Packers finally had a win over Brett Favre and the Vikings by a final score of 28-24.

The play was frenetic, desperate, and almost successful.  Like much of Favre’s night.

Just minutes earlier, it looked for a moment like Brett Favre had pulled
another Greg Lewis out of his hat with a scrambling touchdown toss to
Percy Harvin.  But the would-be 35-yard score was correctly overturned
because Harvin was out of bounds.

Minnesota remained in the game
despite three interceptions by Favre, two on terrible decisions.  Aaron
Rodgers was better overall, completing 21-of-34 passes for 295 yards and
two scores, but his two red zone interceptions took points off the
board.

The Vikings wasted 172 yards from scrimmage from Adrian
Peterson, largely because their passing game and defense remains
erratic.  The Vikings haven’t been able to put together a complete
game.  Parts of the team play well for stretches, but their pass defense
struggled early, and their pass rush didn’t get to Aaron Rodgers all
day.

It’s a fine line between a playoff bye and mediocrity in the
NFL.  With a much tougher schedule and Favre throwing interceptions
like a kid out there again, the Vikings are now coming up short in these
close games.

They are 2-4, with a trip to Foxborough next week.
There is still time to turn things around in a watered down NFC, but
the Vikings have shown precious signs that they are ready to go on a run
considering their brutal upcoming schedule.

“We’re a team of coulda-shoulda-woulda,” Jared Allen said after the game.  “A team of ‘almosts’ right now.”

The
Packers, meanwhile, still look like the favorites in the division with
the Bears imploding.  They finally won a close game and got the Favre
monkey off their back.

The lasting image from Sunday was of
Favre, hobbling off the field to the tunnel in Lambeau Field, to a loud
chorus of boos.  It’s an image we could have hardly imagined a few years
back.

Then again, the heartbreaking interceptions that preceded Favre’s walk of shame probably looked pretty familiar to Packers fans.

Love him or hate him, Brett is one of the greatest competitors of the past 50 years. I used to hate him with all his flip-flopping on retirement, but the more I watch him play the more I respect him. No one else can play at his level at that age, and he has such a desire to win.

To be honest, it was nice to be on the other side of a Favre choke-job.
But really, good game Vikings fans, well fought, and very entertaining. Pack and Vike will likely split this year.
And for those who might complain about the refs – the Vikings got some favorable calls and some non calls (the collins personal foul and on the touchdown to moss – the vikings ran an illegal pick).
Listening to the Favre presser now, he sounds pretty defeated – seems like he’s about to cry. I almost feel sorry for the guy – almost.

It’s “like old times” for an entirely different reason – refs deciding key games for the Vikings. Before all you homers go all “wah wah Cryqueens” on a reply, maybe you should stop and think for a second: if Vikngs fans keep complaining about this stuff, maybe there’s a pretty damn good reason. It. Keeps. Happening. And not just on the level of “oh shut up all teams have to deal with bad ref calls” this stuff is getting way over and above the norm. Where does it end? Sick of my team having to play the refs and the opposing team.

  22. MkePackFan says: Oct 25, 2010 12:30 AM

Great game – and yes, I know, the Vikes fans will point out to the Quarless non-TD TD (that’s on Chilly for not challenging) and the Shiancoe TD non-TD (that’s on the refs which looked like a TD – granted Megatron had a more legitimate TD in Week 1 than Shiancoe).
Ending was just like the many Favre-led Packer games I grew up on wondering if Favre would pull a rabbit out of the hat or pull a gun out of his pocket and shoot himself in the foot (granted this time he’s on the other team).
I was disappointed a bit by our fans though…had no problem w/ them booing Favre coming on the field, but considering this may have been the last time he’s on Lambeau as a player, he should have been cheered leaving it.

But, but, but the refs handed the Packers the game. Shiancoe used the ground to help catch the ball so that’s still a catch, right? Our coach says so. But personal foul facemasks rarely get called late in the game and Randy Moss never gets called for pass interference even though he does it all the time. I can’t believe how much the refs and the NFL hate the Vikings.
    Bwahaha!
Shall we tally the Viking fan predictions this year?
The Vikings will crush the Saints: False

  34. PackerFansAreInbred says: Oct 25, 2010 12:41 AM

Well the Shiancoe catch should have been called a TD, anybody with a brain knows Scott Green got that call wrong. But Brad Childress should have challenged the 2nd Packer TD because that was not a TD. Those 2 things happen, it’s 28-24 Vikings win.

    Seriously?
The first Quarless TD was on Chilly for not challenging.
The Shiancoe TD/non-TD was because he trapped the ball. I agree that this was controversial, but it is what it is.
but you got some assists from the refs too:
    1.) the collins personal foul
2.) on the touchdown to moss – the Vikings ran an illegal pick – it should have been called back.
3.) On the long runback by Harvin – I saw a few block in the backs.
The refs missed calls against both teams.
Stop the blame game. You lost because Favre finally looks his age and your coach sucks (Chilly was calling roll-outs on the final drive. Favre could barely walk).
Oh, and your coach just acted like a whiny school girl in his press conference. Chilly and Favre lost the game, not the refs.

I get beat up for saying this but it’s true, the Vikings will never win a Superbowl with Childress. The Packers should have given Col Klink the game ball for not throwing the challenge flag. I can’t decide who the bigger dumbass is, Childress or Ziggy for giving that clown a contract extension.
All I know is that Klink was the biggest difference in the game last night, that and a pick 6 from our new best friend, BrINT

  44. Mr High and Mighty says: Oct 25, 2010 12:54 AM

  46. GBPjeff52 says: Oct 25, 2010 12:55 AM

Shiancoe no-TD call was correct. ball was vertical in hands when going to the ground, and horizontal afterwards. Thus the ball moved while under his body so the correct call was no TD.

  47. PriorKnowledge says: Oct 25, 2010 12:56 AM

That stupid streak is killing Favre. He needs to sit out a game or two to heal.
And Randy Moss needs to play every play. One of Favre’s interceptions is because he was loping.

When Rodgers was head butted in the Cardinals playoff game’s final play, Packer fans are told to stop crying for “Sharon” Rodgers. When we have a DB get RUN OVER by Fitzgerald and then GB gets called for PI when barely laying a glove on a Cards WR, Packer fans are told to stop crying.
When Rodgers gets headbutted helmet first on a pick in OT vs. Wash., we’re told to quit crying. When Miami gets a phantom call on special teams, which leads to a TD for Miami, Packer fans are told to stop crying.
STOP complaining about the refs! Bert Favre threw 3 picks, one for a pick 6, your pass rush gets shut out vs. a sieve of an O-line and the Packers are down a ton of front line players.
McCarthy’s handling of the game nearly gave you the game. Chilly was just more proficient at screwing the game away. Doing a rollout with a QB with a gimpy ankle?!
    SKOL!

I was surpised the pack oline did such a good job. This loss is squarely on Childress. Vikings have the talent everywhere except in the coaching department.
How do you not challenge that Quarless TD. When the opposing coach rushes his kicking team on the field in record time you know there is something going on. That was a 4 point difference.
Right now I don’t know who is going to take the NFC. It’s almost like no one wants to dominate. If the packers were 100% healthy they might be the team. If Vikings get new coach and Rice back they might pick it up.

  51. Benny Mendenberger-Ward says: Oct 25, 2010 12:58 AM

Great game, the Vikings make a lot of really stupid mistakes. It seemed like they werent happy unless they started out a drive in the hole.
This is on Favre I guess, he made the game exciting as usual though. Glad I got to see it before he finally retires.
The Vikings are clearly a better offense than the Packers, AP being the difference.

  52. frank booth says: Oct 25, 2010 12:59 AM

Watching the Vikings lose is to a Packer team without its starting RB, TE, and other injuries was good enough for me. But to listen to the Viking fans blame it on the refs isn’t even icing on the cake- It’s like a whole other cake.
Viking fans are the worst sports fans on the planet. Low sports IQ, whiny, fair-weathered. They would fit right in in L.A.
Did the Viking fans blame the interceptions on the ref’s yet? Cry on, Cryqueens.
Watch next week when the referees cause Tom Brady to throw for 300 yards and the Vikings lose by 20. It’s going to be extremely enjoyable.

  57. southpark cows says: Oct 25, 2010 1:06 AM

Hey Chilly, Thanks for throwing Brett under the bus. You need to look in the mirror. You don’t challenge the Quarless touchdown, which was not, and you don’t take your time outs at the end of the half from the 40 with 35 seconds remaining . The way I add that up is about 10 points. If I was a betting man, I would say that Brett has a better chance of keeping his job than you do.

I gotta say I don’t feel bad. Every week the packers get screwed on an awful call (take last weeks illegal formation on Robert Francois that could have sealed the win for us). Chilly coulda challenged the Quarless TD that’s on you. The shiancoe play, the ball was moving on the way down and he used the ground to complete the catch. Good call. But don’t forget the gifts you guys were given like the Collins late hit or the no call for PI on the INT intended for Jennings. Even if you guys squeaked by us you guys definately weren’t the better team anyway we outplayed you in every aspect except mistakes and special teams

Childress is toast. 2-4 with the tough games on the horizion; 9-7 will be hard to achieve.
This was game had bad plays, bad refs, horrible calls on both teams. It was a fun game to watch but it was weak.
If either of these teams were playing the Steelers, the Jets or the Ravens both would have lost.
What happened to the NFC North?

  69. Ron says: Oct 25, 2010 1:27 AM

Before I get into this Vikings loss, a few words to you Packer fans: You guys won tonight, but this is FAR from over! You guys have 3 losses and you still have a tough schedule ahead of you. And the Bears are falling apart too, so I wouldn’t plan a playoff party just yet, Packer fans. As for my Vikings, sure Favre played terrible, and the referees took a TD away from them, and they didn’t challenge a GB TD, but what I’m more concerned about is how Brad Childress publicly threw Brett under the bus at the post-game press conference.
Look, there isn’t a player in the NFL that I despise more than Favre, and he did cost the Vikings the game, but he fought like a warrior through injury, and he did give the Vikings a shot at winning at the end. Childress should have talked to Brett privately and he shouldn’t have went off like that to the press. Like him or not, when Favre messes up and loses games, he ALWAYS owns it. Bad move by Brad “Chilly” Childress.
There were some bright spots for the Vikings in defeat. AD played great, and Harvin made several key plays, but they need to get the ball to Randy Moss more. The Vikings can still turn things around, but first Favre and Childress need to sit down and talk because those two have had problems dating back to last year.

  70. thehatefulnerd says: Oct 25, 2010 1:33 AM

Queens fans need to stop making excuses. Go back to the film and look at the call the Packers got last week. Francois was called for lining up over the Center on a punt. Only thing is, he was off the LOS by a yard. Refs only dropped the flag AFTER the commercials were over, due to prompting from the replay booth. On a non-reviewable call, that was never requested to be reviewed.
That BS call changed the outcome of the game. We would have won, but do we bitch about that? No, we admit it never should have been that close.

  71. Tdk24 says: Oct 25, 2010 1:44 AM

I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a text book display of alligator arms like Moss displayed on that last play. Anyone else would have went up and caught a TD like a man.

Love him or hate him, Brett is one of the greatest competitors of the past 50 years. I used to hate him with all his flip-flopping on retirement, but the more I watch him play the more I respect him. No one else can play at his level at that age, and he has such a desire to win.
    ———————————————–
You must be kidding me. You would rather have an over the hill flopper than a top 10-15 QB? Yes, I will agree he is one of the top 50 competitors of last 50 years, but not even in the top 100 players of this year. He is tarnishing what is left of his legend everytime he steps out on the field. Even George Blanda decided it was time to stop being the QB and just kick some FGs and Extra Points to stay in the game.

Great win for a short-handed Packer team. Tough to get to sleep tonight!
I won’t rub it in … the Vikes have a nice trio with Peterson, Harvin and Moss.
But it’s a great day to be a Packer!

  74. stubabe says: Oct 25, 2010 1:48 AM

Cusoman says “it keeps happening” as in the Ref’s are against the Queens. So then you probably wanna call the League office and have the results of last week’s game against the Cowboys reversed right? Dallas outplayed you last week and the Pack out played you this week. Farve is done and so are the Queens.

  75. JohnnyBallsack says: Oct 25, 2010 1:53 AM

Chilly is an awful coach, he was busy warming Brets seat instead of looking at replays. But at the end of the day the entire franchise is at fault. Chilly is a marginal coach at best. Favre is a lower half QB now, at best. AP and Harvin are the only things that make the Vikings winners of 2 games.
Favre has not helped win anything. I would bet they would be 3-3 or 4-2 if Favre retired and Tavaris Jackson was QB. They would at least have a future and not play their first 3 games like they were preseason games. Minnesota Franchise= BIG FAIL!

    =========================================
Well, now you know how Packers fans feel. We’ve gotten more than our fair share of a reffing screw job multiple times *this season*, yet we always have to hear Vikings fans call us out when we point out the horrible inaccuracies and what feels like an anti Packers bias when it comes to the officiating.
Not saying it’s fair, but perhaps maybe you Vikings fans will take a moment to remember this before you chastise us when we call out the poor officiating.
That said, now you know how it feels.

  77. raideralex99 says: Oct 25, 2010 1:58 AM

Maybe you Packer fans should check the Vikings schedule before you celebrate too much because after NE … the Vikings have the best schedule in the league and should go at least 7-1.
But what I find funny is that all you care about is Favre failing???
Remember he’s an old washed up QB … why are you so worried about him? You must think he is still good or something because that’s all you Packer fans can talk about … Favre is this … Favre is that … GET A LIFE!

  78. WaffleStomp says: Oct 25, 2010 2:00 AM

    How ironic.
I have been told by viking fans on this site that the Packers and their fans couldn’t use excuses for their losses. Whether it be injuries or bad calls. I’ve listened to this drivel for weeks now, even though very few fans have made any.
Tonight, all I hear out of them are the excuses.
It was the refs, the whole league’s against us.
Boo Freaking Hoo!!! I think I even heard one person invoke last year’s Championship game. Please. (LMFAO)
The refs? They were trying to give you the game. How else can you explain the fact that they kept awarding your team TDs on the field when they obviously were not. It would have been a travesty and a colectively comatose consciousness to allow those to stand.
I have to admit though, I was shocked by the results. I figured the vikes would wear our depleated defense down. I thought that going in.
But, we persevered and even survived two costly redzone turnovers by A.Rodge. It was a real gut check performance by our whole team. They have alot to be proud of.
Peace to all of my Green and Gold brethren

I have seen almost every Packer home game since he was traded to the Packers and have seen a lot of Brett Favre both good and bad and was at the game tonight. It is evident more than ever… It is time to step aside. All he is doing is hurting his team and embarrassing himself every time he steps on the field.

  80. CanadianVikingFanII says: Oct 25, 2010 2:09 AM

Packers why couldn’t you have knocked Favre out of the game? Now we sit here and pray for a suspension.
Again Brett Favre lost another game; Saints, Miami, Jets and now Greenbay.
Really the only ones playing good football are; Adrian Peterson and Percy Harvin. The rest of the team blows..

  81. Maximus says: Oct 25, 2010 2:29 AM

Wrong. This is not brett Favre of old – it’s Brett Favre of old, new and all-time. He had only one year – last year- where he didn’t do this junk. Even then he ended the Vikes season on – you guessed it – a needless pass late over the middle that was picked off.
He’s the most overrated QB of all-time. Yeah he’s fun, durable and always available – unfortunately for the team he plays for.
He makes the same boneheaded plays now as he did early in his career. HOF player… not a chance.
Oh. He’ll get elected but it’ll be a travesty.

  82. AP's Cleanup Crew says: Oct 25, 2010 2:46 AM

Shutup you dumb @$$ packer fans. Childress said in another interview that it was the worst officiating he had ever seen, and the ref apologized to him for bad calls on a couple of different occasions. There is no way the Shiancoe called can be OVERTURNED. there is no conclusive evidence and that is why NBC and ESPN doing highlights shared those two TD’s (quarless and shiancoe) as completely awful calls. Yeah the vikes lost, but fair and square is something that is not black and white. You got the win, now shut your mouths until you get hosed like you all thought you did against the cards last year. You act like you all never whine about calls, because I read all your sad crying little posts about unfairness, now you get the calls and the ref is doing everything right. Shove it.

  88. Notoroius B.U.G. says: Oct 25, 2010 6:16 AM

This Viking fan isn’t blaming it on anybody but #4.
Yes, I disagree with the ref on the Shiancoe TD reversal, but that’s the game of football….
And yes, GB has a lot of injuries, but it’s still an NFL football team…the people stepping in have something to prove and play hard…nothing is easy.
Look at what happened to New Orleans at home vs. the Browns…you’re not going to win with turnovers, and that’s on Favre…
One last thing @Randy Moss never gets called for pass interference even though he does it all the time.
Bullsh^t…he’s been called at least 3 times since returning to the Vikings….

  89. Notoroius B.U.G. says: Oct 25, 2010 6:18 AM

And one last thing about “blame”
I’m not blaming the refs….I’m blaming #4…I’m blaming Childress…and I’m blaming the Vikes o-line…not enough pressure…oh yea, Chris Cook/Frank Walker combo….the Vikes need to address that issue, cause teams are rightfully exploiting that weakness…

  90. Nagasakee says: Oct 25, 2010 6:45 AM

In the end the thing that will be remembered about this game is not who won or lost.
It won’t the TD that counted that perhaps shouldn’t have.
Or the one that didn’t that perhaps should have.
Or even an old Brett still gunslinging.
What people will always remember is that at the end of the final game in of their very best player in the history of their team, the one they named streets after…the Packers “fans” booed him.
When the anger/joy/pain/vindictiveness of the present is past…all Packer players will remember what the fans did to Brett in their last goodbye.
Packer …class. They always remind you of who they are, where they live, what kind of “fans” they really are.

For all the crap we heard all week, i.e. the Packers OL can’t block the dominant Minnesota DL, or Moss has his best games at Lambeau, or Rodgers can’t win the close games, etc etc it sure was satisfying to see a banged up GB team beat those guys.
It was even better seeing Brent completely melt down in the 2nd half (shocking) which included a pick 6. Why Minnesota went away from the running game I have no idea.
As for the comment that Minnesota isn’t out of it, if they lose this week to New England to put them at 2-5 they’d have to finish the year 8-1 to get to 10 wins. I don’t care if you are the most eternal optimist- that aint going to happen. At this point I’m not sure if the Vikings can make it to .500 at the end of the year.

Their pathetic D-backs should have been flagged for another half-dozen holds and Sullivan should be expelled for impersonating a center.

Of course Minn shouldn’t complain about the refs, Clay Mathews taking off his helmet on the field should not have been called at the end of the game. It is not an obvious violation!
    ————-
Were you watching the play at all? His helmet flew halfway up his face due to an *uncalled* hands to the face infraction — in the middle of a play it’s not like he had time to pull it back down and buckle it up; he did the only thing he could do, tossing it off was his only chance at remaining in the play.
love all the tearful viking rubes today, just love it. coach childress is perfect for you guys.

Vitriolic posts from Packer fans smack of getting shots in before Green Bay ends up 8-8 and Vikes win Central at 9-7.
    ————————————————
Whats the Central? I thought we were in the NFC North……
Complain about the Shiancoe call all you want, the fact is that the ball hit the ground and shifted when it did. If it moves that shows that he did not have complete possesion and the ground assisted at that point.
Childress is crying over the Matthews facemask call when Loadholt almost took his head off!
I’m certainly all smiles today, in this office surrounded by degenerate Viking fans all licking their wounds today…… You can’t even beat a team of back-ups.
    7-9, no playoffs for you.

Vikings get the ball inside the 15 with less tahn 30 seconds. that is Moss territory. throw it high, and let him jump for it. tramone williams is doomed.
    BUT NO!
lets get two penalties! let’s make it harder than it has to be! 1st and 30! biggest choke artist franchise in sports. hands down. Percy almost bailed out this team again. ALMOST.
i hate being a vikings fan. this team is cursed.
can’t even beat a packers team that has almost 70% backups on defense. what is that? seriously.

I love how some fans of the Vikings clearly state that they would rather beat teh pack twice than go to the super bowl and then the others tell us to enjoy our super bowl win from last night. Hell that wasn’t even close to a super bowl for us. It was a great finish that had me on the edge of the couch and questioning call that went both ways. Mostly the late hit against Collins and Chilly wasting what like 40 seconds with two time outs left and claiming he was worried about the Pack having three left after they had just used one before the nice draw play that the Vikings had run. Lastly, could Favre been cheered off the field sure but why, he is a Viking now and I would put a few other Packers in front of him as teh greatest Packers, he may have been the most exciting but to many crappy playoff games to be the greatest Starr yes Favre no. Great game Vikings fans but don’t blame anyone but your team and coaches.
