The Notre Dame Middle School Fighting Irish of Clarksburg, West Virginia wrapped up their 2010 season on Friday afternoon with a 39-20 win over the Cameron Dragons. The victory gave the Irish a 6-2 record, and plenty of them likely will be playing next year as freshmen on the high school team.
Santino Cava, who continues to remind me of Barry Sanders (and we don’t make that comparison lightly), scored three first-half touchdowns on three carries. The first time he touched the ball -- on the first play from scrimmage -- Cava went more than 50 yards for a score. The next time -- on the first play of the next drive -- it was another 50-plus-yard run to paydirt.
Phil Chafin added a pair of touchdowns in the second half.
Of course, I’ve got to brag a little about Florio Jr. Playing left tackle, a little defensive tackle, and a lot of middle linebacker, he had somewhere between six and 10 total tackles, a fumble recovery that was nullified because the get-what-you-pay-for officiating staff somehow thought that a quarterback simply dropping the football constitutes an incomplete pass (at least we know they’re ready to work on an NFL crew), and a stirring quarterback sack on a key fourth-down play late in the first half.
Alex and I had been joking all week that, if he got a sack, he would do Jared Allen’s calf-roping celebration (especially since Jared himself hasn’t gotten to do it much this year). Instead, Alex got up and looked for me in the stands.
That was much better.
The non-Catholic schools in Harrison County don’t include the only Catholic school in their postseason tournament. This year, the small Catholic school would have given the larger public schools in the county a run for their money.
