I’m so tired of these dumb comments about Sings lack of coaching skills his job is to put these players in a position to win and with out a dout they’ve been in position for a player to make one play for them to win he do anything about bone head millionair athletes fumbling throwing interception taking a knee at the end of games to win but when Sing makes a quote like great white Phil Jackson does all the time he gets crucified. Black leaders don’t stand a chance their one and done.

Too often Florio makes himself out to look like a jackass! Maybe you simply are a jackass, after you’ve shown it too long and often enough!
Singletary was simply making a metaphor, he was paying homage to a great quote. Football players must have a “war-like” mentality! Even if it’s not life-and-death like actual war, it’s the war-like mentality they take out of it. Therefore, this article is nothing but ignorance.

I don’t believe that Coach Singletary was being disrespectful in any way. I believe he was using the phrase in a rhetorical fashion to inspire the team. For him and his season, this may be his finest hour?
I just wish I could see the game on television because I’m excited about the fact that Troy Smith is finally going to get a chance to start in the NFL. On a world stage, as well.

I feel bad for Singletary. He played the game when players loved to play and he played on a team that had many great players and were hungry to be the best ever.
Except for the teams that have systems in place for sustained success (New England, Pitt, Indy, NYG, Balt), most are subject to how well their key players stay motivated to play because in this day and age in the NFL the money is so good that many players are playing for a paycheck.
Singletary is also saddled with a dire QB situation, which determines many teams level of success or failure. He could be a good coach, just not sure it’s gonna be with the 9ers. I remember when everyone was singing his praises when he got the 9ers turned around last year. Now, it’s “He can’t coach”. It’s a fickle world, the NFL.

As a Brit I’m pleased to see the teams here. I don’t think Singletary was being malicious with his comments, no offence taken over here as far as I can tell.

Unbelievable – it is unfathomable that so many here can defend the use of the those words to describe a meaningless game between two teams aspiring to mediocrity.
Those words were spoken during a dreadful time in world history to people that endured and suffered horrific losses. Those words, spoken after the death and sacrifice of so many, may not be “sacred” to some ignorant of history, but their ignorance does not make those words any less dear.
Singletary, chose his words poorly, however, from what I have seen/heard of him, he seems like a decent enough fellow and so I can chalk up his words as a mistake, but to those that are willfully defending his mistake there seems to be no such excuse.

i agree ppl are reading to far into this as well.. its just a motivation speech. i think its ridicilous hes gettin attention for sayin something about HIS football team just because he used a phrase from yeaaarrssss ago lol. his teams just havin a bad year.. and like every team with a bad year media designs ways to get the headcoach on the hot seat by sayin hes incompitant coach and has no control and cant get job done, but if i remember correctly everyone was calling HIS team playoff contendors after a better record last year. lol funny huh.
ps just acouple weeks ago our HC tom coughlin was on hot seat after 1-2 sayin noones responding, now were 5-2 and here superbowl contendors n coughlins good again.. so which is it?

To make things even more bizarre, Singletary should adopt an English accent and repeat the “finest hour” stuff. Maybe he could wear a Churchill style hat and smoke a cigar while saying it. That would set England and the NFL abuzz.
Then next week he could go into a Mussolini phase, then Stalin, then Hitler. (at which point he would be fired)
This stuff could tie in real well with the NFL looking to expand to Europe.

Im a fan of Singletary’s, he shows true emotion on the field unlike most coaches.

Are the words off limits? Of course not. It’s probably not too smart to go into another country where the NFL is trying expand its footprint, however, and cheapen a major moment in that country’s history by comparing it to a football team that’s underperforming big time. Think of it like a salesman visiting a potential client’s house and insulting the way his wife decorated the place. Who knows, maybe the guy will agree with you on some level, but it’s not likely to curry his favor.
As for your football as war comment, you make some of the wrong points. Some teams really don’t like each other, but that’s true for rivals in pretty much any sport. The proper football-war comparison is one based on tactics, strategies, and terminology. George Carlin had a wonderful bit he did about Football vs. Baseball, focusing on the aggressive war-like attitude that applied to football. The problem that some people have now with players and coaches making the direct analogy tends to come down to the fact that we actually have men and women in uniform fighting and dying right now. When our service men and women aren’t in harms way, people don’t typically have any problems with comments like that.

Meh. People use historical analogies all the time to frame their mundane struggles in a grand light. If he’d copped a phrase from one of Pericles’ war oratories, no one would say jack, even though the original context was just as dire, and it’s not exactly “too soon” to use WWII the same way.
Singletary’s biggest problem seems to be organization. His late-game management last year was almost comical, and Jimmy Raye got fired because he couldn’t even get the plays in on time. The 9ers have scored only twice in the third quarter this year, which speaks to slow in-game adjustments vis-a-vis opponents’ flexibility. These are not problems that will disappear at the college level. He’s a clear-cut coordinator by trade, and needs to recognize that.
