Childress won't talk about decision to dump Moss

Now that the Vikings officially have cut receiver Randy Moss, coach Brad Childress has discussed the situation publicly.

But he hasn’t said anything.

Appearing on Sirius NFL Radio’s Movin’ the Chains with Pat Kirwan and Tim Ryan, Childress paid homage to his nickname when asked about Moss.

“[I'm] not going to get into anything with that, Pat,” Childress said.  “You always make a decision based on your short-term interests here and your long-term interests.  And I really do wish him the best as he moves forward.”

Asked by Ryan for insight onto how the decision was made, Childress referred to “an internal process and usually what we say is what’s in house stays in house here, Tim.”

We don’t expect many more details on Wednesday, when Childress and Favre meet with the media for midweek press conferences.  And that’s unfortunate.  One way or another, the Vikings need to get their version of the events out there.  Otherwise, they could lose enough of the fan base to kill any shot at securing a new stadium in Minnesota.

umm Favre’s going to say something and you guys are gonna carry the story till Sunday when football on the field actually comes of the point of focus…. thankfully

1-2 and comparatively nondistracted without him
1-3 and very distracted with him
the media and league have been covering for moss’s hijinks and tendencies for a long time.
the real moss is coming out in the news now.
he is the definition of a turd.
chilly shouldnt be fired for cutting him per se. but for getting him in the first place.

  7. AmateurFootballtalk says: Nov 2, 2010 8:21 PM

Child[ress] is certainly like a Child. Trade away a third rounder for a player that doesn’t even make a month on the roster.
And if he ends up back in New England, expect Moss to say nah nah nah nah boo boo

  8. TheBigOldDog says: Nov 2, 2010 8:21 PM

The man you doesn’t know when to shut up. The man with no common sense filter now doesn’t want to talk about a major roster move done w/o even consulting with ownership? Gee surprising.

You might as well put JERRY Rice or Simeon Rice, or Uncle Ben at WR….Sydney Rice had one good season as a WR and you think he’s some kind of Pro Bowler the minute he hits the field. You are so far beyond delusional Pervy, you can’t be helped. As for Harvin, maybe once he learns to run routes he might be good. Until then, enjoy your no-better-than-five-and-eleven season.

It’s unfortunate, but you have nobody to blame but yourselves. When you twist and spin everything Favre says or does, why risk saying something you could cunstrue? What gain is it to him?

What dumb logic. You might want to take note that Rice is 3 weeks away from returning. Why the hell would any coach that is 2-5 be stupid enough to risk going 2-8 while waiting for Rice to come back by cutting said receiver 3 weeks early? Why trade for him at all in the first place? It’s just another example why the Vikings will never win a SB. They’ve been a mess from the ownership down for nearly 3 decades

Childress dicussed the situation publicly but hasn’t said anything….nope nothings changed there…

  17. JJP says: Nov 2, 2010 8:38 PM

This is another example of why Childress is despised by so many fans in Minnesota. People simply want answers. I don’t expect him to explain everything, but give people something that might explain part of the logic or some type of motivational speech about having the right type of players in the locker room. Something…anything…please?
He showed his true colors by not mentioning anything during the press conference on Monday. He will claim that he wanted to deliver the news to the players first in a meeting that was held after the Monday press conference. However, he could have postponed the press conference or simply stated that there would be a second press conference held later in the day.
Instead, he cut Moss and went into hiding. He let his poor players who were still hanging around in the locker room deal with his mess. If the guy believes this was the best move, then come out and say it immediately and offer some explanation. It’s not that freaking difficult to win over the hometown fans when you explain yourself logically and give them some type of a rally cry.
A good coach finds ways to deal with the egos in his locker room. A good coach doesn’t just give up after four games. Fine Moss. Suspend Moss. Bench Moss. Don’t just cut Moss, eat the third-round draft pick, and become the laughing stock of the league.
Matt Birk is too classy to admit that Childress is the reason he left Minnesota as a free agent. Childress showed he had zero class when he cut Marcus Robinson on Christmas Eve just to be a prick. I won’t defend Moss’s behavior or massive ego, nor can I defend Chilldress’s behavior or massive ego.
This appears to be nothing more than Chilly showing everyone who has the biggest, um, package at Winter Park. He won this battle, but nothing short of winning a Super Bowl should help him win the war of retaining his job after this season. My guess is that he would have been sent packing over this issue were it not for ownership not wanting to pay two head coaches during the lockout.

  18. DaBadGuy says: Nov 2, 2010 8:38 PM

    Let’s see:
Childress is critical of Favre’s play, and he is thrown under the bus for saying too much.
Childress refuses to comment on Moss’s release, and he is in trouble for saying too little. And actually handling the termination like it would be handled between employer and employee — no details from the employer.
As a journalist, it must be nice to play both sides of the fence, and just throw crap up against the blog and see what sticks…

Wow. Maybe if lived in Minn, watched the NFL Network. You would know the fans are really upset with this decision and it has been stated by broadcasters, minn media and their fans. That this will probably weigh on the decision to get a new stadium. Already fans weren’t happy with the Ownership and Childress, this didn’t help the situation any.

I wonder if GM BrINT Favre approved of this move in advance? As bad as this makes the Vikings look, it will become unbearable if they should lose again this weekend to the Cardinals.
Col Klink has nothing to gain by discussing this in the press. My theory is that Klink is an old fashion guy, he wants to be in a manogamous relationhship and BrINT already has him for his bitch so with Randy telling Klink where to go, it just became too much for one guy to handle. Who knows, maybe Randy was telling him his dress wasn’t pretty and it was BrINT’s favorite dress.
Klink hoodwinked Ziggy last year into a contract extension, maybe he might convince the Viking fans that he is a real coach. Stranger things have happened.

Moss is playing the NFL like a fiddle…
He wants a contract extension before the lockout… the Patriots wouldn’t give him one so he gets himself traded…
The Vikings wouldn’t give him one so he gets himself cut in the hopes that a different team will give him what he wants
There very well could be a team out there who knows the only way they’re going to get a player of his caliber is to sign him to a contract extension this season …
THAT’S a place where Moss wants to play, wherever it is, and I’d suspect his agent is making that clear

  32. Hauschild says: Nov 2, 2010 9:35 PM

I’ve listened to a lot of talking heads backing Childress on this one. OK, fine, he got rid of a dirt bag before said dirt bag could do any long term damage.
What Chilly needs to pay for is acquiring the dirt bag in the first place. Chilly was all cocky when he signed Moss using the proverbial “We performed our due diligence, that’s for sure.”. Oh, really? Like having a long conversation with Moss and finding out what he thinks about Minny’s conservative and ancient offensive game plan? Did Chilly actually believe a dude like Moss would happily meld with the team for really no reason?
I think Chilly needs to pay whatever salary the Vikes have currently doled out to Moss – for starters. God – why couldn’t the Vikings have had a poor coaching staff like this when Favre was struggling yearly in the dome for 10 years back in the day. Good Lord?!?!?

  33. FireChildress says: Nov 2, 2010 9:37 PM

  34. TouchdownRoddyWhite says: Nov 2, 2010 9:39 PM

“It is better to be silent and thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt” – Can’t remember.
Logically, he knows this whole thing was a big mistake, and honestly what’s he going to say that’s going to make it any better on him?
As JJP said, he could give some BS pep talk spiel about team how it was a necessary move to maintain a cohesive locker room, but wouldn’t that be like a man buying a poisonous spider, only to flush it because it’s a safety hazard?
I also think the argument could be made that there isn’t much solidarity on the team anyway, so how much damage could Moss have done considering every other Vikings related article not about him seems to be about how he and Favre are “at war”.
The guy has no control over his team, and is likely in panic mode right now just grasping for anything he can to save his job.

  35. GrandsoOfCoach says: Nov 2, 2010 9:40 PM

Thank you, thank you Vikings. We are so happy that when Chilli came to interview for the job you never let him leave. Because his next stop was Green Bay. Also thank you Ted Thompson for never trading for Moss even when Favre begged you and threatened to retire (which he did right after Moss went to NE). That worked out pretty good. You were so right.

  36. FinFan6886 says: Nov 2, 2010 9:52 PM

He should just say that the organization cannot trust Randy Moss to faithfully do his job or even attempt to do so; couple that with the fact that he acts like an entitled childish asshole and it is hard to dispute the decision to kick Moss to the curb.

  37. Bjorno says: Nov 2, 2010 10:00 PM

Buy the ticket, take the ride.
Childress knew what Moss was when he made the move, and should have stuck it out until the end of the year when Moss becomes a free agent.
By releasing him now, he gives Randy exactly what he wants. A chance to go to another team and showcase what he can do and likely get a new contract.
A better remedy would have been to sit Moss, keep him off the 53 man roster for a few weeks and let him stew. That way he will come to the realization that if he doesn’t behave, he won’t get “Straight Cash Homie” next year. Granted, it would likely hinder our chances of making the playoffs, but so does waiving him.
At least that way, Childress makes a stand without looking like a moron, which is exactly what releasing him did.

  38. toddm6d says: Nov 2, 2010 10:10 PM

It’s amazing how the Minneapolis local radio station nine to noon show has circled the wagons around Childress as well. The VOX of the Vikings had a real back handed way of telling the listening audience how stupid they are for putting accountability of this situation on Childress. Well I guess we know who signs his checks.

I didn’t even think of that. That’s really chickenshit of him. How could any player on that team not want to take a shiv to the guy???

  47. pfii63 says: Nov 3, 2010 9:17 AM

Q: So why is it that Randy Moss never pulled anything like this in New England?
A: Because the culture of the New England Patriots would never allow it. Not only would Bill Belichick yank Moss back to earth, but so wuld the other players.
So while all of the Vikings staff and players were so upset with Moss’ antics, why didn’t they yank him back into humility? Because no one in that organization is currently capable of doing so. Chilly has created a culture where no one is accountable. How else do you explain a Head Coach who allows his team to be held hostage by a prima dona quarterback? Now he swindles himself out of a third round pick, and some of you Vikings fans are so desperate to blame someone that you buy this crap that Moss is now the root of all evil.
Here’s what happened (and I don’t need any alleged “sources” from the Vikes’ camp to put this together)… Randy is someone who needs discipline… needs someone who will drive a whip and hold him accountable. He went to Minnesota believing that playing with Favre and having Chilly there would be enough to coax out the “good” Randy and improve the Vikings’ fortunes. Randy was wrong. he got to Minnesota and found a dysfunctional franchise with a crappy coach who is incapable of seeing the big picture. Chilly makes decisions like a rat in a maze…left, right, forward, backward, but he in absolutely incapable of of making decisions that are good for the long-term interest of the team.
So yes, after realizing what his new environment really was, Randy went back to “being Randy”, and Chilly had the nerve to be surprised. The very fact that he is surprised tells me this guy has zero reasoning skills.
At this point anyone pulling for Chilly might as well wear a shirt that says, “LA Vikings.” Chilly is pissing off the fan base and making it very unlikely that the local community will be sympathetic on stadium issues… that was the point of the comment in the article.
Wilf is pissed, but does he have the balls to do something about it? If he was smart, he would fire Childress now and promote Frazier. He would bench Favre’s sorry ass and start looking at next year, giving Tavaris Jackson the rest of the season to demonstrate that he is the guy before looking at other possibilities in the off-season. But Wilf should should just acknowledge that this season is done, and the long-term health of this franchise is in serious jeopardy. Allowing Chilly to remain is simply not the smart choice.

  48. Ambrose says: Nov 3, 2010 10:05 AM

I applaud Childress for sending Moss packing. It took balls to do the right thing in this age of mutimillionaire athletes and the power they wield. It took guts and my respect for him has gone up. I have always cheered for the Vikings in the absence of any Green Bay successes, although I can’t do that anymore (until Favre hangs it up for good.) Good job Childress, more coaches should do what you did….team first…always (which coincidently is the reason I lost respect for Favre.)
