The 2005 Defensive Rookie of the Year looks set to join a future Hall of Fame wide receiver on Tuesday’s NFL waiver wire. (Now there’s a sentence I didn’t ever expect to write.)
Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com reports Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman is taking a physical with the team today. If he passes before 4 p.m. ET, Merriman will be waived and be available for all 32 teams to claim. Just like Randy Moss.
Merriman has been idling on the team’s injured reserve list with a “minor-injury designation,” which means the team has to release him once he’s healthy. He’s been recovering from a calf injury and was only able to play three games this season, making five tackles.
Like Moss, we expect a team to put a claim on Merriman. San Francisco, who just picked up Thaddeus Gibson from the Steelers off waivers, has previously been mentioned as a possibility.
Any team that picks up Merriman will owe him the remainder of his prorated $3.269 million salary.
