The Saints almost traded Pierre Thomas to the Patriots

It’s been a landmark day for stories that are bound to piss off Sean Payton.

Longtime Saints beat writer Brian Allee Walsh, now of NewOrleans.com, reports that the Saints and Patriots were close to making a deal a few weeks back that would have sent injured running back Pierre Thomas to the Patriots in exchange for a cornerback.  Thomas would seemingly be a great fit in New England because of his versatility, but the deal hit a snag when the Patriots also wanted a pick in the deal.

Frustration continues to build over Thomas’ injured ankle.  It’s been six weeks since he sprained it, and it doesn’t appear Thomas is close to a return to the field.

Reggie Bush has been difficult to replace in the Saints’ offense, but we think Thomas has been just as big a loss.  He was the engine to a lot of their playoff success last year.

Half a season later, it’s clear that Thomas’ stock has fallen dramatically within the organization.

    Well I guess this explains the mysterious nature of the so called injury. Looks like Pierre is in no hurry to get back to the field. Personally, I feel there is no replacement for Pierre Thomas. He’s excellent. I think he got screwed over in the off-season with the lack of a decent contract and all. If he had been fully healthy there’s no way the Saints would have lost to the Cardinals and the Browns.

    I would think said Corner would be Darius Butler. He was a 2nd last year so that may explain the request for a pick as well.

  3. patriotsfan says: Nov 4, 2010 7:47 PM

    i dont believe it… the patriots are very happy with BJGE “the lawfirm” and danny woodhead..and with the way our secondary has been playing besides Mccourty we need all of them!

  4. olelefthander says: Nov 4, 2010 7:48 PM

    I tend to think Loomis knows best, but I also think Pierre has been huge and vitally important to their success.

    Sign TJ Duckett.

    Was Brad Childress the source of this story?

  7. justintime says: Nov 4, 2010 7:50 PM

    Butler?

  8. Ilovefoolsball says: Nov 4, 2010 7:52 PM

    This sucks, just when I get his jersey because he seemed like such a lock because he was so effective and valuable, now he’s not gonna be here next year. Nice.
    I guess I should’ve gotten Aaron Brooks’ jersey back in the day so we could’ve shipped his @$$ out of here earlier.

  9. iAMthatiAM says: Nov 4, 2010 7:59 PM

    A cornerback huh?
    (that has Darius Butler written all over it)

    We almost needed him

    If that’s the case, then please buy Scott Shanle’s jersey now. Slow, poor-tackling overrated outside linebacker. 1994 called, they’d like their barbed-wire tattoo back.

    Brian Allee Walsh also said they would cut Darren Sharper before training camp. I guess the stories from reputable sources like the Times Pic aren’t inflammatory enough for you guys.

  13. Laxer37 says: Nov 4, 2010 8:28 PM

    So the Patriots, a team that doesn’t run the ball and is thin at corner, were looking to dump a corner for another running back?
    Odd story.

    Two of the most close-lipped coaches in the league, right? So where is the leak coming from? And whose interest does leaking it serve?
    This sounds more like a rumor than anything real.

    Talk about distractions for a team just finding their rhythm. I like it.
    Speaking of distractions, how come we never hear about what’s going on with narcotics theft case? Did I miss something, or is this just going unmentioned in the media?

  16. County K 66ers says: Nov 4, 2010 8:33 PM

    If the Saints would just give Christopher Ivory the ball they’d have nothing to worry about.

  17. HarrisonHits says: Nov 4, 2010 8:37 PM

    @Ilovefoolsball,
    LOL at least you’re not a Vikes fan who bought a Moss jersey in the last month !

  18. rjgreen3 says: Nov 4, 2010 8:45 PM

    if he really wants a good contract he needs to get back on the field and play!

  20. TouchdownRoddyWhite says: Nov 4, 2010 8:50 PM

    @CountyK 66ers
    The man has only had two games where he averaged more than 4 ypc, and one of those was against the Panthers. He’s not a save-all by any means.

  22. TouchdownRoddyWhite says: Nov 4, 2010 8:53 PM

    I forgot to mention, he has one run longer than 20 yards, 0 TDs and 3 fumbles, with two of them lost.
    Yeah, great idea. Why not throw him 25 carries a game.

    Is that why there are reports of Thomas ready to go week 11?
    Oh, and HarrisonHits, no Vikes fans bought Moss jerseys, they only had to find the old one.

  28. sxt004 says: Nov 4, 2010 9:21 PM

    If the give chris ivory the bal hes going to fumble it. He has fumbled in every game, luckily some have gone out of bounds..he has a long way to go. As for PT i would be glad for them tp trade him. Ladell sucks, jones has been decent amd when lynell comes back hes better and more safe than ivory ever will be. Add in bush and the saints dont need thomas

  31. Skleech22 says: Nov 4, 2010 9:43 PM

    The actual trade proposition was as follows.
    Saints get Darius Butler
    Patriots get Pierre Thomas and a conditional CAMERA!

  32. TylerRDunn says: Nov 4, 2010 11:12 PM

    What the hell? Reggie Bush has been “hard to replace”? Please. Lance Moore has far outdone Bush at his own role.

    @JL65
    I’m sure there are more. Heck if the websites from China still list them someone has to be buying them.
    I just like the people who question me about him being on the team. Brief as it was, yes it did happen!
    I never bought one and I’m glad Moss is gone so I can stop answering the questions regarding me buying his jersey.
    Now if I could only find a cheap Faulk jersey… with the sewen on numbers!

  36. Kiss Bills Rings says: Nov 5, 2010 1:32 AM

    I like Butler & would hate to lose him but if I was Bill I’d of done the deal straight up….Pierre would have been the PERFECT back for the Patriots the next 5 years….if it’s true BB really boned up not making the trade!!!

  37. previouslybannedfromPFT says: Nov 5, 2010 1:50 AM

    I’m by no means one of these guys who profess to know, “all things football”, but I think there’s a rule against trading injured players.

    ===
    If the PT drama was really a distraction for the team, we would have lost to the Steelers since the “Pierre is in Payton’s doghouse” rumors came out prior to that game. Nice wishful thinking, though.
    The vicodin case is in arbitration so neither side is allowed to speak to the media about it. Thus the media has nothing new to report.
