Ndamukong Suh tries an extra point

Ndamukong Suh is already carrying more than his weight in the middle of the Lions defense, so why not add a little to his plate?

The rookie defensive tackle filled in for an injured Jason Hanson on an extra point in the third quarter of Sunday’s game against the Jets. The try hit the upright, which means that the Lions now lead the Jets 13-10 after a nifty play-action fake and sell by Jahvid Best allowed Matthew Stafford to stroll into the end zone after a Braylon Edwards fumble.

Hanson was hurt on a field goal try when Trevor Pryce barreled into him after his kick. Jim Schwartz elected to take the points off the board and Stafford made that decision look good on the next play.

Hanson tried kicking into the net on the sideline but was in obvious pain. Punter Nick Harris handled the kickoff and Stafford was also spotted practicing place kicks for Detroit.

UPDATE: Hanson returned to kick an extra point after Nate Burleson’s fourth quarter touchdown.

The Jets are trying to cheap-shot themselves to victory.

Why didn’t they go for 2?

This is why I have ALWAYS believed NFL teams need to dress two placekickers if their punter isn’t up to the job as a backup kicker.
There is no single position more important to the outcome of the game than kicker. Kickers score the most points and also have the biggest role in establishing field position. Teams don’t take kicker seriously, because there are so many qualified kickers, there isn’t a shortage.
Another issue is that when the kicker goes down, it’s such a specialized role that another athlete cannot easily fill in for him. With teams dressing so many backup WRs and RBs, it’s shown as ridiculous when the kicker goes down and the team has to resort to crap like Suh trying an XP and having no ability to kick off.
The Lions should have just gone for two after the TD, but most important, they won’t have the ability at ALL to try for a field goal in a game currently separated by three points. That is a TREMENDOUS disadvantage.
Here’s hoping this doesn’t cost a gutsy Lions team the game today.

As it turns out it’s the difference in the game.
In other words, a totally cheap undeserved gift win for the thoroughly overated J-E-T-S.

I am thinking your laughing is now crying.
Teriffic comeback by Sanchez and the Jets, now 4-0 on the road.

FIRE THE LIONS COACH. 3rd and Six and you pass with the overrated jets having no time outs and under two minutes. I’m a steeler fan and even laughing at the coaching decision on that one. How do these guys become coaches based on that strategy.
Jets equal overrated. See you in Pittsburgh when
your walking out with a loss.

Sad but true. I know momentum was in the Lions’ favor but having a DT kicking the extra point was a very poor decision.

    7thheaven,
with the non-existant pass defense by the squeelers, even sad-sack Mark Sanchez will exploit your posers! Squeelers got very lucky beating Jets in playoffs 5 years ago, now its payback time as Jets take control of AFC by pounding the squeelers in Pittsburgh in December, see you there.

Hopefully Roethlisberger can hold off on raping another person at least until the Jets can come and tear your team a new a-hole

Jets take 1st in the AFCE, again…You Are What Your Record Says You Are

It baffles me, that the Lions didn’t go for 2, and even more so, the punter, Nick Harris, didn’t raise his hand to fill in for the injured Hanson. Even with Suh’s highschool soccer experience. But then I look at the uniforms they have on and understand fully why a defensive tackle was attempting an extra point.

Dont worry I wont rub it in too much when the steelers beat the jets. I actually like the jets even tho they were lucky today. But luck is part of it.
You must be still taking that jets loss to the steelers hard years ago if your still talking about it. I do hope you all knock off the pattie cakes and win the division
    Good Luck!

    @finssuk
The only thing Big Ben will be raping is that jets secondary. Good luck to the Jets but not against the steelers. Concentrate on the Pattie Cakes first and scoring more then big goose egg at home.
