Shawne Merriman "definitely won't be re-signing in Buffalo"

We give linebacker Shawne Merriman credit for showing up right away to the Bills after being claimed off waivers and saying all the right things at his introductory press conference.

Behind the scenes, Merriman was reportedly less excited about his new team.

John Czarnecki of FoxSports.com reports Merriman wasn’t happy about being claimed by the Bills and “definitely won’t be re-signing” in Buffalo.

Merriman is at a stage of his career where he just needs to stay healthy and play well for an extended stretch of games.  It’s been a while.  Unless that happens, he won’t be in a position to dictate much about his contract and next team.

This is a BS article, the quotes are made to appear that Merriman himself is quoted as saying this, instead its just a nobody blogger that has zero information.
PFT is slipping further and further

I hear they have an opening at WalMart for a greeter.

It’s called humble pie Mr. Merriman. Take a big bite, because it’s your turn. You’re no longer even the best LB on that team in Buffalo.

  7. Peester15 says: Nov 7, 2010 8:57 AM

Who does this old gimp think he is?? He hasn’t been relevant for years and now he is too good for the Bills. He is lucky to be on a team at this point.

CZAR’S SCOOP: Although he said all the right things with the Buffalo media, former Chargers OLB Shawne Merriman wasn’t happy about being claimed off waivers. Merriman, who is in the last year of his contract, definitely won’t be re-signing with the Bills, who are clearly in need of outside linebackers. Bills GM Buddy Nix ran the S.D. college scouting department from 2002 to 2007 and had a big hand in the selection of Merriman as the No. 12 overall pick in 2005.
Um.. so where did he say he was unhappy? Sounds like its the “CZAR” thats unhappy. Dont cry CZAR, its ok. *pat on the head*

  9. ochostinko says: Nov 7, 2010 9:16 AM

Of course he won’t be re-signing in Buffalo. He’ll be signing with a team from the UFL unless he gets back on the juice.

Why would you not play and get paid to practice and prove you might still have something left in the tank?

  11. UpstateRules says: Nov 7, 2010 9:25 AM

Next week at the Lions game, wait till he sees the response that a rabid player gets from the league’s most rabid fans. Merriman is a baller and he will be adored by the fan base in WNY.
There are way too many misconceptions about Buffalo and WNY. Go to a game in Orchard Park, experience the leagues best fans and you will then form your own opinions. Ask Chris Berman about Buffalo.

Can’t blame the guy. He went from San Diego to Buffalo. He went from a team that was going to make the playoffs every year (even that’s it) to one that won’t make them at all.

  13. youboettcha says: Nov 7, 2010 9:28 AM

…unless he wants to try his hand at the UFL.

  14. Buck Stallion says: Nov 7, 2010 9:42 AM

Damn Ochostinko…you beat me to it. Although he is already close to Canada, perhaps he can raise his game enought to play in the CFL.

  15. Buffaloblues says: Nov 7, 2010 9:43 AM

Buffalo does have some good fans . Hopefully merriman sees theres some pro-bowl caliber players around him and another player or two, and another year for a 3-4 and this D would be good. Took me less than 8 games to fall in love with the Bills

How does John Czarnecki know this…. Did he actually sit down with Merriman in an interview and find these so called “facts” out? I think the media wants to believe that Merriman would like nothing but a jet plane out of Buffalo. They are running out of stuff to write about, now they are digging for BS.
Just as UpstateRules said….Next week at the Lions game, wait till he sees the response that a rabid player gets from the league’s most rabid fans. Exactly.

  19. bjbroderick says: Nov 7, 2010 9:47 AM

He might see how good that Lions D is and figure he could come on over here and slide right in at OLB. At a reduced rate, of course.

  20. phlflyers says: Nov 7, 2010 9:58 AM

This site has been getting worse and worse. Did Merriman say he wasn’t re-signing or did some dope from foxsports say this? Huge difference. Merriman I’m sure is happy to b anywhere.

  21. nuclearwarfare says: Nov 7, 2010 10:17 AM

    @UpstateRules
I would ask Chris Berman, if he would ever stop talking about how great San Diego’s power blue uniforms are!

Buffalo is the armpit of America. You could blame him?

  25. Try.TheVeal says: Nov 7, 2010 10:37 AM

Who the hell cares what Chris Berman has to say? Seriously, do you guys actually think a rabid fan base is going to effect any NFL player’s deicsion on where he plays?….It’s all about $$$$ and/or a chance to win, and from the way buffalo has been for the last… say decade, that sure as hell isn’t the place. And besides, Berman grew up in NY, it’s his team,….Hello

  26. BrianMD says: Nov 7, 2010 10:47 AM

    Hahaha.
Merriman is assuming the Bills want to “re-sign” him.

11/28 Black And Gold Day At Orchard Park!!!!
And the Chris Berman reference, how can you take a guy whose hair is growing inward seriously?

  28. VASeahawk says: Nov 7, 2010 11:02 AM

Upstate…spent five years in Buffalo and attended many games and NOOOOOOOOOOOO they aren’t the best fans, in fact they are obnoxious., stupid, and miserable to be around. And I grew up a Bills fan watching OJ before he (allegedly) became a murderer. Left that armpit an avowed Bills hater.
Only things good were the Trafalmadore Cafe, catching a bus to watch the Sabers lose, and Central Park Grill next to the Trico plant.

Merriman will be signing with the Florida Tuskers, which means that Mister Florio will be favoring readers with every minute detail of the experience.
No Tusker news yet today, Mike?

I hate to attack posters like you, because I know your heart is in the right place and you believe the things you say.
And I have much respect for Bills fans, even though I think your blind love for whatever sub-standard product your management puts out is enabling them to continue doing it.
But the days where a player chose where he wanted to play based upon the rabidness of the fan base are long long gone. Players make their decisions on three things, in this order:
    1) Money
    2) Organization
    3) Climate and city
If you can look at it objectively, you have to see that that is problematic for a broke, mediocre team with a 71 year old first time GM, a World War 1 era owner, and a coach who thinks its a great idea to yell at fans at training camp.

  32. wwwmattcom says: Nov 7, 2010 12:05 PM

He doesn’t have to re-sign, he just has to make sure he does well enough that another team will want him. I bet he does aweful though and gets a low grade contract, giving the Bills a 7th rounder as compensation. Come on Merrimen, MVP MVP, haha, get those Bills a high round pick.

Well, you heard it here first……he WILL RE SIGN with Buiffalo. The Bills have the talent and when they put a stretch of 4-5 wins together this year it will peak his interest………Buf falo is also a great football town and he will feel welcomed…..sit back and watch the rebirth of a castoff.

Phil, you gotta wake up man.
The Bills are a complete joke of a team and they’ve signed a complete joke of a player who will leave them when the season is over.
    Wow.

    From Takeo Spikes’ Web site:
“…The linebacker would become eligible for free agency following the campaign, and no one was more aware of his availability than the Buffalo Bills fans who pulled out all the stops to make Takeo feel right at home when the Bengals played their season finale at Ralph Wilson Stadium that December. Many of them showed up in Bills jerseys with Spikes’ name taped to their backs. A bunch of them sat behind the Bengals bench and applauded Takeo each time he came off the field. The recruiting pitch was pretty obvious: They wanted him to shuffle off to Buffalo, which he ultimately did. “The fans really sweetened it up when I showed up for that game,’’ Spikes recalls, chuckling. “They put the whipped cream on the ice cream sundae. It felt like a place where I belonged.’’
Takeo would not regret the move. In fact, he calls his seasons in Buffalo the most enjoyable of his NFL career. And the passion of the fans was a huge reason. “It was almost like playing high school football on a Friday night in Georgia,’’ he says. “They were into it as much as we players were and that was a great feeling.’’
—This disproves what many of you have said – that players only care about money, immediate chance to win and city/climate.
Money is number one, obviously, but it’s not everything.
