Andre Smith suffers another setback

For a while on Monday night, it looked like Bengals second year tackle Andre Smith was experiencing a breakthrough. He was stonewalling Pittsburgh’s LaMarr Woodley, earning effusive praise from ESPN’s Jon Gruden. (Okay, maybe that’s not so unique.)

Typical for his career, Smith wound up taking two steps back after taking one step forward. The No. 6 overall pick in the 2009 draft got benched after giving up a sack later in the game. On Thursday, it was revealed that he has a broken bone in his foot. Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer says Smith could miss the rest of the season.

The Bengals took a huge risk when they drafted Smith so high and it’s been a terrible gamble so far. He’s only been healthy enough to play 13 games in two years, starting five. Smith hurt the foot at practice on Wednesday.
