I think you guys blew this one. Jones said, “Before I made the decision with Wade Phillips,” and that very well could have meant, “Before I hired Wade Phillips to coach the Cowboys….”

At the very least you need to confirm with Jones exactly what he meant.

Wasn’t this a story before the end of last season too? I seem to remember that they were talking about Gruden inquiring about this before they decided to stay with Wade last year, no?

Solicit is a strong word. My guess is Billick and Gruden probably said something like they’d be interested… You don’t how Jerry interprets things. Barry Switzer or a John Madden could have said something like “if I were younger I love to take a job like this.” Or maybe he just meant assistant coaches… Dave Wannstedt, Charlie Weis?
Jason Garrett will get a chance and he shouldn’t be judged by his W/L record but more how he handles the team and he handles the position.
I think if he doesn’t choose Garrett he goes defense first. Gregg Williams will get a long look (Sean Payton was OC under Parcells) plus all the usual suspects.
John Fox (if he gets fired) is a good coach.
Mike Singletary (if/when he gets fired) would be a great choice for Defensive Coordinator – he’s Texas guy (Baylor Bears).
I think Wade Phillips was too easy going. Wade has been a great defensive coordinator wherever he coached but nothing more than an average HC. The defense was terrible. Guys are wide open catching passes and the players don’t even seem to be upset that they were getting beat. No leadership and no pride equals a bad season.

Jerry Jones will never find what he wants in a Head Coach. The only way he would be happy is if he were Owner, GM and Head Coach. I’m not sure if that is a possibility with the rules and all but, If it could happen, I’m sure he would do it.
