Despite a report that Vikings receiver Sidney Rice will make his 2010 debut on Sunday against the Bears, a source with knowledge of the situation tells us that no decision has been made.
Per the source, Rice likely needs one more week in order to be ready to test his surgically-repaired hip in a game situation. Either way, a decision as to whether he’ll play on Sunday will be made during and/or immediately after pre-game warmups.
Until then it’s “very iffy,” the source said.
Rice was hampered by a hip problem throughout much of the offseason. He ultimately opted for surgery in August; if a decision had been made in May or June, he could have been ready to go when the season started.
The fourth-year player, who’ll be an unrestricted free agent if the next set of free-agency rules permits a player to hit the open market after only four seasons, needs a strong finish to the campaign to rebuild his perceived value. Playing — and playing well — deep into January would help considerably.
