Wilf says he will keep Childress after latest Vikings meltdown

Brett Favre called this week’s game in Chicago a must win.  They were dominated in every phase of the game in a 27-13 loss to the Bears.

Vikings player have often talked this season about missing a break here or a break there.  They have been close to winning a few times, but they haven’t ever been close to playing like a championship-caliber team.  Sunday’s loss should hammer home the point they just aren’t that good.

Give the Bears defense credit.  They clamped down on Adrian Peterson (17 carries, 51 yards) and made Brett Favre often check the ball down or make mistakes.  Favre ended up with three interceptions and a lost fumble on 27 attempts.  (One pick came on a tipped pass, another when Peterson fell.)  Favre’s protection didn’t hold up, his receivers dropped passes, and Favre made poor decisions under pressure.

At 6-3, we’re still not sure how good the Bears are.  But this game was very encouraging. Aside from one mind-numbing interception, Jay Cutler played very well, completing 22-of-35 passes for 237 yards, three touchdowns, and two picks.  (The other interception came on a dropped pass.)  Cutler escaped pressure to make third-down conversions a number of times.

At times, Cutler looked like a young Favre.  Favre looked like an old Favre, and one has to wonder what happens after another loss or two.

Vikings owner Zygi Wilf told ESPN’s Ed Werder he won’t consider firing Brad Childress at this time.  That just seems to be just delaying the inevitable.   The Vikings have looked like a mediocre team since the season started, and there’s little reason to think that will suddenly change.

Cutler was close to playing up to expectation.
Vikings played to my expectation, not sure what the copycat press and spoonfed fanbase elsewhere thinks quite yet but thank you for calling a spade a spade.

    Keep Chilly!!!……..Fire FAVRE!!!

Those Int’s were on the receivers, who played like crap.

plus Moss was really a difference maker today in Miami…lmao!!

  6. frank booth says: Nov 14, 2010 5:13 PM

Bears had 11 penalties for 116 yards and still managed to win by two TD’s- and the Bears really aren’t a very good team.

Vikings still haven’t beaten a winning team. Their wins have come against teams that are a combined 6-19. Yet, many Viking fans think this is a Super Bowl caliber team.

  7. webby0433 says: Nov 14, 2010 5:14 PM

Fire Chilly!!!!!!! Players don’t play for him and he can’t fire up this team at halftime….. EVER!!!!!!

  8. pervyharvin says: Nov 14, 2010 5:14 PM

Receivers let Favre down today.Falling on the grass so the ball gets picked. Favre can’t do it all.

  9. stellarperformance says: Nov 14, 2010 5:16 PM

Once again Favre played good enough to win and also contributed primarily and effectively to another Viking loss. In my book that is called sweet karma.

Things to do for the Vikings by the end of the season with the personel we have now:
    1. Fire Childress
    2. Fire Bevell
    3. Fire Fraiser
    4. Release Tahi
    5. Release Madieu Williams

Childress and Bevell can’t call a game if their life depended on it, Fraiser can’t coach/call a defence to stop anyone..

    Things to do after:
    1. Find a QB
    2. Find linemen
    3. Find corners and a free safety
    4. Find Defensive linemen
    5. Find Linebackers
    6. Find receivers
    7. Fullback is optional..

Barring a miracle in which the Oline and Recievers become superstars, the season is lost.

One more thing*** Why is Percy still on kickoffs?!? He is going to be gone for the season due to injury because of it, make Joe Webb a reciever and put him on them at the least!

  11. Wisconsin77 says: Nov 14, 2010 5:17 PM

Wilf needs to see what is happening in Dallas right now and know that if there is any chance to salvage the season, he needs to make a change now.

Seems like I was one stroke off on my keyboard on my previous post :\

  12. nfldoc says: Nov 14, 2010 5:17 PM

Thats because Wilf is a loser. A LOSER. Childress, in no way deserves to be a coach for any team next season. What good is it doing to keep him for the rest of this season? NONE…unless you are fighting for a top 5 draft pick.

  13. raideralex99 says: Nov 14, 2010 5:21 PM

Favre should get a medal playing with that team … bad OL, bad WRs, bad coaches and bad defence. They should fired Frazier first than Chilly.

  14. zatko says: Nov 14, 2010 5:24 PM

Please, Please Please… Childress… Bench Favre and let’s take a good look at Tavaris for a 7 game stretch and just see what he can do before next year rolls around… if next year rolls around.

  15. irishgary says: Nov 14, 2010 5:29 PM

Thank you Mr Wilf for keeping Childo, at least until the Pack eliminates them next week.

  16. slipperypete21 says: Nov 14, 2010 5:30 PM

This was a complete and total breakdown by the entire organization. Childress should have been fired last week. We now see the results of that mistake. The entire team collapsed and they were dominated in all aspects of the game. Keeping Childress will continue to irritate and alienate Vikings fans and virtually eliminate any chance of a successful season or a new stadium, but maybe that’s what Wilf really wants. If they keep it up, they’ll lose most of their fans by the end of the year. Then it will be much easier to move the team to a bigger market so the Wilfs can fill their pockets with more money. Can you say LA Vikings?

  17. favrelous says: Nov 14, 2010 5:37 PM

Where can I buy my LA Viking season tickets. The longer Wilf keeps Chilly the more I think he wants to move the team.

Rice not playing is crazy. Poor sore guy.

  18. slipperypete21 says: Nov 14, 2010 5:38 PM

Keeping Childress isn’t working. The only chance the Vikes have to salvage the season is to fire Childress immediately and give Frasier a chance for the rest of the year. He can’t be any worse than Childress, and if he doesn’t turn things around, then they can dump the entire staff at the end of the season and find a new coach.

  19. bigplayclay52 says: Nov 14, 2010 5:39 PM

Could the pack be the team to put the finish Wade and Chilly in back to back games?

  20. metalhead65 says: Nov 14, 2010 5:48 PM

your stll not sure how good the bears are after the game they played today?look it is not their fault if the teams they beat turned out to be not so good.but the fact is they have beaten the cowboys, vikings and packers this year, teams everybody predicted to be in the superbowl hunt. just admit you guys at pft have anti-bears bias. I am sure if they ran the table you would find something to complain about. so now that you have pointed out which int’s were not favre’s fault you will doing the same thing from now on with cutler right? he threw 2 incompletetions today because the recievers slipped and were not they were supposed to be but I don’t see you writing that.stop making excuses for favre and just say he sucks this year!maybe the bears won’t win it all this year but they are a GOOD team!

I love it, packers fans piling on!!!! Typical of them!! Yes the Vikings are having a down year, but you have to remember, last year the packer got a 50 put on them by Arizona. You all are not all that you think you are. The packers are a sad team in a good situation.

Yes, why is your best and only good receiver left still doing kickoffs. Don’t get it. At least you will get a good receiver back next week, and hopefully Harvin isn’t out for a while.

    That was DOMINATION.

So much for that huge win over the sad-sack Cardinals.

Terrible o-line…terrible secondary…terrible d-line, despite the talent…terrible special teams, on occassion, especially today…

Why wouldn’t we agree with you, you’ve been so spot on with Vikings games so far thsi year, I believe you have correctly called the undefeated Vikings 9 wins…..wait they only one 3 of those games against the cards, lions, and cowboys…..well done!

  33. footballrulz says: Nov 14, 2010 7:16 PM

Oh this could be so much fun, but it’s just not in me. Pervy/Majik–I feel for ya guys.

Here’s hoping the Pack puts a full game together next week and again the last game of the season. Those inter divisional NFC North games are always tough. Even with Detroit.

Makes me glad I’m not an NFL coach of any kind.

  34. cusoman says: Nov 14, 2010 7:34 PM

This team has quit. Berrian won’t play even by all accounts he’s fine. Rice doesn’t play even though he was cleared and the team needed him. Percy is the heart and soul of the receiving corps now and he played through what looked like some immense pain. Favre’s toughness is of course never questioned.

And the thing anchoring it all down in the dumps? Childress’ lack of giddy up and motivation. How the hell can you rally around an emotionless automaton like him? We need someone with spunk, with energy, with some in your face enthusiasm that’s positively contagious! His play calling, along with Bevell’s, was atrocious once again, and it’s looking like Frazier is not the answer either, because that defense had the same lack of motivation.

What I don’t get is why Minnesota pro sports teams keep trotting out all of these coaches with little to no emotion and personality. Think about it… Childress, Brewster, Gardenhire… robots. Let’s get some personality in here, a person players can identify with and rally around. I know there’s a lot of people out there that don’t think coaches should be the player’s friends, and I agree with that – what I’m talking about is something more visceral, more from the gut inspirational for the players. Wilf needs to take this in another direction, it’s time.

Yeah and last year the Vikings blew an easy opportunity to win a Super Bowl.

    Different year, different results.

  40. skimbell says: Nov 14, 2010 8:22 PM

Wilf’s a tight ass. He’s not going to fire Chilly until the season ends. Bad enought that he’ll still owe Klink $14 million. He probably figures to save some bucks by not having to pay to relocate Chilly to L.A.
New coach for the L.A. Biqueens after they get unpacked.

  42. shaggytoodle says: Nov 14, 2010 10:29 PM

The Vikings can take a seat, I believe alot of people knew they were gonna play like crap. Your QB has the accuracy of someone in thier 40′s and he’s a turn over machine. It seemed alot of Viking fans wrote Chi. off and looked ahead to being .500 after thier game against GB. Minn. couldn’t get off the field on third down. Hopefully Green Bay can go into Minnesota and keep playing as they did vs. Dallas, and feeling fresh from the bye week.

  43. brewdogg says: Nov 15, 2010 12:46 AM

“Yet, many Viking fans think this is a Super Bowl caliber team.”

Yes, we did. And despite what the haters say on here, I doubt there is anyone serious about the NFL who doesn’t think this team has the talent to be a SB team. They’ve quit. They’re going through the motions. I have been holding out hope that they would get their heads on straight and start playing like the outcome of the game mattered, but they haven’t, and I am doubting that they will.

It’s starts with the guys with the headsets. Childress needs to go, Favre needs to be benched or released, and let Frazier show us what he can do for the rest of the season. If he can light a fire under this team and get them to play a few games like there is more on the line than a paycheck, give him his chance, and if he can’t, time for a new staff that will weed out the guys who play like highway construction workers.

Let’s be real. This loss may have spelled the end of playoff aspirations, and losing to the Packers next week certainly will. If they lose next week, there is no reason to continue with this charade. I feel like I’m watching a 5-year-old play Madden these days.
