As expected, the Bengals have placed kicker Mike Nugent on injured reserve after he suffered a knee injury during a failed onside kick attempt with 2:35 to play in Sunday’s 23-17 loss to the Colts.
And as Adam Schefter of ESPN pointed out in reporting that the Steelers may cut kicker Jeff Reed, the Bengals could provide him with a new home.
The Bengals also have placed cornerback Morgan Trent on injured reserve. He played in the team’s first eight games of the season (starting one), but he suffered a knee injury in practice on November 11.
The good news (if there ever is any for a 2-7 team) is that defensive end Antwan Odom has returned after a four-game suspension for violating the league’s policy regarding steroids and related substances. The Bengals received a one-week roster exemption for Odom, which gives them a total of three open roster spots.
One of those spots will surely go to a kicker. Unless Chad Ochocinco can persuade Marvin Lewis to let the man with the golden cleats prove that he possesses a golden toe.

Antwan Odom was on the suspended list, and thus not counting toward the 53-man roster. Moving him to the exempt list keeps him off the 53 for now, but does not open up a roster spot. Trent and Nugent are the only two clearing spots on the 53-man, so the Bengals have two open spots, not three.
Hey Mike, I’m pretty sure the onside kick actually ended up being successful if I am not mistaken.

The Bengals recovered the onside kick, thus, the attempt was successful.
