Colts still fear listening devices in Foxboro

Andy Reid, Peyton Manning

For the second straight weekend, the three-year-old notion of the Patriots engaging in tactics not recognized by the rule book hovers over one of the team’s biggest out-of-division rivalries.

In his look-ahead to the coming weekend, Peter King of SI.com (via StampedeBlue.com) points out that Colts quarterback Peyton Manning fears the presence of enemy ears in the visitors’ locker room at Gillette Stadium.

Manning hasn’t said it, but King says he’s heard “reliably” that Manning and former offensive coordinator Tom Moore used to huddle in the hall outside the locker room when the time came to talk strategy.

“So if you’re outside the locker room Sunday,” King writes, “don’t be surprised to see Manning and his first-year coordinator, Christensen, huddling for a few minutes.”
None of it means that bugs have been planted in the locker room, but there’s nothing wrong with being cautious.  Even if the caution becomes paranoia.

if they will record defensive signals, why not bug the place. reguardless of what people say or think; being caught cheating really taints the whole BELICHEAT era!

  2. tiffpats4eva says: Nov 20, 2010 4:56 PM

Peyton Manning: Waaaah! I threw a pick-six in the Super Bowl and I am the best QB to ever live. Waaaah! I am better than Tom Brady. If we lose, Belichick cheated! Waaaah!

  3. Ralphie says: Nov 20, 2010 5:01 PM

Ha ha. The game hasn’t even started and the Pats are in Fetus Head’s cranium. When Indy loses Manning can blame it on the alien anal probe that will be submitted to him tonight by extraterrestrial visitors wearing red, white and blue and looking alarmingly like Minutemen. Oh, the conspiracies!

  7. belichickee says: Nov 20, 2010 5:25 PM

Maybe Manning is aware of what they do in Indy’s visitor’s locker room and assumes everyone does that?

If you were going to bug the dressing room, why not bug the hallway too?

Here is a more logical explanation. Manning implodes under pressure and the Colts run an entirely predictable offense.

LOL…wow…Does everyone know what the Patriots record is since “spygate”??? It’s freakin’ 46-15!!!…a play away from 19-0, 11-5 with a backup QB, and now they have the best record in football!!! Change your signals babies…the same signals that are in plain view to 70,000 people in the stadium…I love how all you haters just reach for the stars to find a way to stomach the fact that the Patriots have WHOOPED your team’s butt for a DECADE! DYNASTY muth f’ers…LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

  12. frankvzappa says: Nov 20, 2010 5:44 PM

no amount of cheating could give any team the best record in football the last decade…wont be any more doubters after ring #4 of the B/B era this super bowl…if manning was really worried, the colts could have someone sweep for bugs, and then produce said bugs to the league office…since that is not happening, golden boy manning and the colts are obviously just making excuses for the humiliation everyone knows they are going to suffer tomorrow…

  13. stufad says: Nov 20, 2010 5:45 PM

Could it be the colts paranoia comes from Lucas Field being bugged. It’s not as if Polian’s crew is innept when it comes to Hi Fi Audio.

Go Patriots. Go Patriots! GO PATRIOTS!

  17. mrconnors says: Nov 20, 2010 5:51 PM

And one of my sources said that the Patriots fear listening devices in Lucas Oil Stadium or whatever that dump’s name is. Go ahead, prove me wrong.

See how easy it is? Just fling crap at the wall. How are the Patriots supposed to defend against this? Even if they deny it, they’re liars according to all the sheep, and of course they bug locker rooms.

One thing I do like is, all the “Cheatriots” crowd are starting to get restless. They see the young team get a complete overhaul and still are tied with the best record in the league. They’re getting a little nervous.

  18. spyboots says: Nov 20, 2010 5:54 PM

I would not take this lightly. Colts were also onto the Cheats, just like they were in the 2006 season AFCC game when Dungy would not allow any cameras on the field.

  19. bradwins says: Nov 20, 2010 6:00 PM

    1. Manning does not “fear listening devices” – this is just part of the gamesmanship that surrounds Colts/Pats week. I think its fun, but people should not get worked up over it.

    2. The idea that Belichick and the Patriots ever “cheated” remains laughable. They broke a rule, the same as holding or pass interference. Saying the Pats cheated because they filmed the opposing sideline from the field rather than from a box (where it was legal to film the opposing sidelines) is equivalent to calling a guy that got a speeding ticket a criminal. But hey, whatever makes you feel better about your team’s inferiority, I guess.

  20. zilla1126 says: Nov 20, 2010 6:02 PM

Unless they know the hand signals, I don’t think there will be a problem.

One question that never gets asked about the whole Patriots cheating thing:

    Why wouldn’t they?

Morality? Don’t see any concerns there.

Worried about getting caught? Not much happened to them last time compared to what they got caught doing. If it was not for the fact it went public nothing would have happened at all.

Nobody cares when they see the score. 14 points with the greatest offense of all time? Tom “Deer caught in headlights” Brady and the Patriots got OWNED by a wildcard team. One of the most embarrassing defeats in NFL history.

  38. tnsteve says: Nov 20, 2010 7:23 PM

These teams have ex-FBI agents running their security departments. I mean, seriously. They can’t scan for listening devices in a closed area like a locker room?

  39. mjdkid100 says: Nov 20, 2010 7:27 PM

    A couple things…

Were listening devices ever even proven to be used by the Patriots? I didnt think they were.

Also, can someone please explain how if video taping is cheating how the signals are used? Since they were filming in game, with multiple coaches seemingly knowing. Were they decoding them during the game? Probably not. Were they scouting for future games…probably. A lot of teams change there signals, and use dummy signals. This more than likely had little effect in game, and more likely was used for future scouting. If you use the same signals that 70,000 people can see two games in a row against the same team, you deserve to have them stolen and decoded. Many coaches have admitted to doing the exact same thing….

  40. mjdkid100 says: Nov 20, 2010 7:36 PM

It’s not known when someone first filmed coaching signals. It goes back at least to 1990 when Marty Schottenheimer coached Kansas City. Both on a Fox pregame show and on WFAN, a New York radio station, Jimmy Johnson, who coached the Dallas Cowboys to two Super Bowl Championships, said he also had staffers tape opposing coaches.
Johnson said teams could tape signals from the press box, but sometimes the press box was on the wrong side of the field. In that case, the cameraman filmed from the sidelines. Johnson, who also had interns search other teams’ trash for discarded notes and game plans, said taping coaches wasn’t worth the effort and abandoned it.
Johnson learned the procedure in 1990 from Mark Hatley, a Kansas City scout, who taught him how Marty Schottenheimer’s Chiefs did it. Johnson praised one Schottenheimer assistant, Howard Mudd, as “the best in the entire league at stealing signals.” During much of the current decade, including their Super Bowl year, Mudd worked for the Indianapolis Colts

  44. mrconnors says: Nov 20, 2010 8:14 PM

I’d like all the resident NFL experts, who know the inner workings of the NFL, to explain how taping DEFENSIVE signals helped the Patriots light up the Raiders, Steelers, and Rams for a whopping 6 field goals, 3 offensive touchdowns, two special teams TD’s, and one defensive touchdown. I don’t know how the Patriots could have possibly beasted like that without knowing what was coming on defense!

Vinatieri’s clutch kicks in the blizzard? All due to spygate. He knew what was coming when the Raiders tried to block his kicks.

Bledsoe’s career 10/21, 100 yard, 1 TD day? It was because of those amazing defensive signals. We’ve never seen a performance before or since.

Brady’s monster 144 passing yards in the Super Bowl? It was because he knew all the plays!

The PR and blocked FG, both returned for touchdowns? It was because the Patriots “knew what was coming” (LOL). They knew the Steelers were going to punt, and also attempt the FG, so they planned accordingly! LOL!

Ty Law’s pick 6? It was all on stealing the Rams defensive signals. Oh, wait…

  45. norcaleagles says: Nov 20, 2010 8:18 PM

Its funny how so many of you are getting on Manning when the article even says that Manning never even said ANYTHING about this. Maybe he just wants to meet in the hall with his OC because theres too many people in the locker room and its a lot more noisy too.

Hey snap – Number of plays Patriots were from going 19-0, winning the Super Bowl and being the greatest team ever = 1.

What a spectacularly ignorant statement. Just what “one play” are referring to? Any one of the sacks that Brady took? Plaxico burning the DB for a TD when NE tried to blitz? I’m guessing, because all you Pats losers point to it, you’re talking about the Tyree catch. 1) It was THIRD down and five to go idiot. He doesn’t make the catch, the Giants still have the ball 2) No football game EVER comes down to just one play. One play MAY seal the victory or the defeat, but it is the ENTIRE game that gets you to that point. If you were referring to the Tyree catch, would it have mattered if NE was up by 21 or down by 21? Not at all. The WHOLE game counts and the reality is NE got embarrassed. You can try to rationalize it away, but no 18-0 team with a record setting offense and a “genius” coach should be beat by a wildcard team. Yet, they were. Maybe the “genius” coach in THAT game, wore a “NY” on his cap and the “hoodie” came up well short of being a “genius”.

  47. macpac86 says: Nov 20, 2010 8:36 PM

You would think between cheating and having the Colts dressing room bugged the Pats would know all of the Colts plays.

    Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I just hope Goodell suspends the whole dam franchise for a year if not for good when whatever cheating scam they’re doing comes to light.

-The Patriots were caught Video-Taping opponents Calls and Walkthroughs leading to the infamous “Spygate” which wasn’t properly handled by the NFL which tried to brush it aside.

-They were accused of keeping “an extensive video backlog of opponents sideline calls” and using those calls in games.

-They have notoriously faked injuries late in several very big games to either stop play, slow a no-huddle, or force player rotations.

Every single team – even YOUR team – tapes every single game, from a “legal” position. They can tape the opossing players on the sideline, they can tape the opposing coaches signals, they can tape the cleavage of the fricking cheerleaders – IF they do it from authorized positions.

No walkthrough or practice was ever taped. You are incorrect, it was proven to be untrue and the Herald retracted the story. How was Spygate brushed a side by taking a 1st round draft pick, fining Belichick 500,000 dollars, the team 250,000.
Also tapes were released for the public to view and they showed tape from multiple games to the public and decided there was nothing of major significance. The reputation was destroyed due to attempting to scout signals for future games.

They did have tapes of other teams defensive signals which get changed from year to year and even game to game during the season. Unless you have a terrible coach.

All teams at some point have faked an injury, or something similar to gain a competitive edge. Honestly the only time it was significant and people remember it being talked about the Colts got 4 plays fro the 1 yardline and got stopped every time. Faking an injury didnt decide the game.

You would think between cheating and having the Colts dressing room bugged the Pats would know all of the Colts plays.

Yet the Colts have beaten the Pats the past 5 or 6 times they have played.

    Stupid, stupid, stupid.

    ———————–
Yea its amazing that the Patriots lost the AFC Championship when they had all the Colts defensive signals. The defensive signals must have also told Samuel to get that pick six before half. Hey, its almost like they were using signals during the same game and really had no major advantage against teams that werent morons and rotated signals, and had dummy calls like good coaches…

There are others here that said dumb things that I disagree with, but you idiots are different in that you actually seem to have tried to think through your responses. How unfortunate. I hope you didn’t injure yourselves in the process.

In all of your posts there is not a single intelligent thought (although there is some evidence at attempts at intelligent thought, so thanks for trying). Your jealousy is inhibiting your ability to think.

I find it so funny how regardless of what happens, everyone just associates the Patriots success to cheating. Apparently the only reason they have won a game in the past 11 years is because Belicheck has been cheating and yet no one has stopped him yet…..seems odd with Goodell handing out 10+ fines a week for completely legal play.

It’s so funny how you can point these things out and every mindless, jealous, loser fan completely ignores it (while deep down they know their team’s just sucked the past decade) —

a.) Defensive signals were in PLAIN VIEW to 70,000 people in the stadium…available to anyone who wanted to see them — FACT! There is ZERO argument to this…

b.) The Patriots won 3 Super Bowls on the backs of their DEFENSE…not their offense which was never all that dominant —REMEMBER? Or is 2007 still stuck in your heads?

c.) Pats are 46-15 since this ridiculous “story” came out despite losing tons of KEY veterans every year…how’s your team doing? (They still suck!)

As long as Brady and Belichick are here, the DYNASTY will continue….HAHAHAHAHA…how does it feel girls??? HAHAHAHAHA

Nobody cares when they see the score. 14 points with the greatest offense of all time? Tom “Deer caught in headlights” Brady and the Patriots got OWNED by a wildcard team. One of the most embarrassing defeats in NFL history.
    ____

Hey dingleberry — How is losing by 3 points in the final minute on the back of a miraculous catch getting “OWNED”?…LOL…Listen, when you already have THREE RINGS in a decade, the 4th is just playing with HOUSE MONEY…It’s called diminishing marginal returns p*ssy…LOLOLOLOLOL….Dynasty…..HAHAHAHAHA

  78. patriotinvasion says: Nov 21, 2010 2:41 AM

    @east86

Yes you can be ONE play away from winning a game. Goofball Eli throws a pass right into the hands of Asante Samuel on the final drive and he drops it. If he makes the catch, the Patriots down out the clock and win the Super Bowl (their 4th in 7 years). ONE play…if it went our way, we in, it didn’t and we lost.

The Giants beat us that day. They played better. Made more plays when it mattered and won. No question. No Pats fan would deny it. Just like we played better and beat the Giants in the Meadowlands to go 16-0 4 weeks prior. The Giants were the champs in 2007.

We as Pats fans are just pointing out the moronic Anti-Belichick hater crowd for reaching for any bogus way to justify the pain and heart ache the Patriots have caused their team over the past decade. We LOVE it…keep it coming…the fact that we inspire so much emotion and hate from you guys just means you love hangin’ off our big ball sack every waking moment of your pathetic lives…HAHAHA

Patsie fans are the most legendary obnoxious fans in the NFL. It’s probably more accurate to say that Boston area fans in general are the most obnoxious. It’s their legacy. Boston teams can never win enough to feed the braggadacio emenating from the mindless twits on the internet. It is a howl to read boston.com after a Patriot loss, when the fans want to dump almost everyone on the team.

  80. kissringsrex says: Nov 21, 2010 4:43 AM

I still can’t believe this is in print. This is nothing more than an attempt to deflect a win by the Patroits. I’ll bet the inside source is Bill Polian. As for the Billacheat crowd, get real. Bill wanted to get caught. Why else would he go to a former staff members stadium to tape on broad daylight by somebody wearing Pats stadium pass? He was tired of people stealing his signals. He has a complex defence, unlike Tony “Tampa Two” Dungie. The very next year the defence gets helmut communication. That’s not a coincedence.

They cost my team a SB trophy when they finally got there after floundering in the NFC Championship game all those times. But if you’re going to do it, have some pride. patriotinvasion – Jealous? Of what?!? NE is not a division or conference opponent. Giants won the last big game they played. As for hating Belichick, he was a Giants Super Bowl winning coordinator!! Most Giants fans, myself included, were disappointed when he took the Cleveland job. We wanted him to stay within the organization. As for the tired “Asante dropped an INT” excuse, well, watch the WHOLE game. You’ll see several occasions when the Giants almost had an INT or a fumble recovery. Those would have changed the game as well. Every game, every team makes mistakes and wastes opportunities. It goes BOTH ways. What counts are the plays that are MADE, NOT the ones that didn’t happen. Bottom line, NE lost and deserved to. Stop making excuses, be a man, and admit defeat. Asante’s miss didn’t cost NE the game – four quarters of being beat by a technically inferior team did. NE had LOTS of opportunities PRIOR to the “missed INT” to put points on the board. NE chose not to max protect Brady and found out the hard way that even an outstanding QB can’t win when he keeps getting hit. That’s a coaching and personnel failure.

King’s gotta be making this up.
    ===================================

Deb, you are the most rational Steeler fan on the Planet, I live in Pittsburgh, so I know a lot of them.
Manning and Christiansen could do this in ever locker room for all we know. Nothing specific is said about Gillette Stadium. King probably heard that they talk in the hallway before games somewhere and waited until the Colts played the Pats to write and article about it just to stir up something. Why did this have to be twisted into being Gillette stadium? The media will stop at nothing to turn a vague statement into “the Pats bug the visiting locker room.” The general public/non-Pats fans and media members will just take it as fact and continue to call the Pats cheaters due to their own ignorance ala spygate. I wish more people would use a little intelligence here and move along because this is not a story.

    ::dusts off his Spygate rant…again.::::

I admit I still love the misinformation. Part of the reason why I left broadcasting, truth does not matter…

In a 2006 playoff game, Patriots’ security prevented a Jets camera crew from filming. The crew was there in addition to the cameramen already recording game film from end zone and sideline angles. New England security didn’t confiscate the footage and turn it over to the NFL.(last time that happens!)
At a press conference, Mangini said the extra camera was there because he wanted game footage from both end zones.(Cheater!!)

The next meeting (2007), Mangini sells out the Pats.

    Cheaters of the Past:
Tom Landry—a Giants assistant —tuned into the Browns’ radio frequency, allowing him to call the right defensive plays. Loss of a first round draft pick? 500k fine? Nope, they banned QB Radio helmets. Tom Landry CHEATS? No, this became a ‘Ha Ha put one up on the Browns’ stories.

Jimmy Johnson said teams could tape signals from the press box, but sometimes the press box was on the wrong side of the field. In that case, the cameraman filmed from the sidelines.
No worries it is the Cowboys, so It’s cool. Tx football is far better place for a Dynasty than those grumpy New Englanders..what do they know about football up there?

The Infamous memo misquotes the rules “Videotaping of any type, including but not limited to taping of an opponent’s offensive or defensive signals, is prohibited on the sidelines, in the coaches’ booth, in the locker room, or at any other locations accessible to club staff members during the game.”

There is actually nothing in the rule book against stealing signals. Why? Because every staff has done it since the dawn of time. It is part of the game. Halas was known for subterfuge that bordered on criminal–or so the stories go.

The rule states this:”No video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches’ booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game.”
Yep guilty..but then the punishment? If the team does better –supposedly without ‘cheating’ it gets fined more?
If the Pats made the playoffs, they lost a first round pick. If they didn’t, they lost second and third rounders. Interestingly, Goodell based his punishment on how well the team did without the camera. The better they did without it, the worse the punishment got.

So why the issue? Simple really. Parity. It is not pretty but the league prides itself that worst can go to first, that .500 is what half the teams should be. Watch, some other team is going to go on a decade tear, and remember this, when some ‘scandal’ puts a dent in their armor.

  101. patriotscheat says: Nov 21, 2010 9:10 PM

ok seriously patriotsinvasion the series is at 6-5 New England. The colts haven’t been dominated. I think you might remember the AFC championship game in 2006. ’nuff said.

  102. Deb says: Nov 21, 2010 11:09 PM

    @bradysbitch …

We get the same thing with stories about the refs favoring the Steelers–which is really ridiculous when you look at today’s game with Oakland. We were getting fined for things rarely called and one thing I’ve never heard called. All we’re getting favored with is fines. Try to look at it this way: If the Pats hadn’t had so much success in the last decade, no one would care about spygate. People who really know the game know your team and mine earned their wins. You just have to try to chalk up the rest to ignorance.
