Matt Millen gets miffed about Favre criticism

MillenTheThinker

We’ve pointed out from time to time our amazement at the fact that the man who drove the Detroit Lions into the ground has been able to parlay his ineptitude into not one nor two but three jobs in the media.

But Matt Millen has done just that, and the only good news is that he provides us with some periodic entertainment.  Like last week, when he was gushing over the coach who led the Lions to, um, no wins in 2008.

Or like last night, when Millen took up for his huntin’-and-tractor-drivin’ buddy Brett Favre in response to a suggestion from Steve Young that Favre is, as a practical matter, running the Vikings.

The folks at Yahoo! Sports have the video, and it’s compelling.

“This running the team stuff, I don’t buy that crap at all,” Millen said, in instantly and obviously irritated fashion.  Young responds by saying that it’s exactly what’s happening.

“I don’t buy it because you’re not there, Steve,” Millen said.  “You don’t have any idea what goes on in that freakin’ locker room.”

Given the look on Millen’s face, Young’s retort was a wise one.  “That’s true,” Young said sheepishly.

But here’s the thing.  Millen isn’t in the locker room, either.  And so guys like Millen and Young, who used to be in locker rooms, interpret the circumstantial evidence of things happening outside of the locker room in the hopes of helping us all understand what may be going on inside the locker room.

And here’s the difference between Young and Favre on this one.  Young was being objective.  Millen apparently is helping out a friend.

Remember the report from Jay Glazer about Millen calling Favre when he was with the Jets and getting information about how the Lions could best beat the Packers?  We think Millen got upset because Young was saying bad things about one of Millen’s guys.

Millen knew enough about his Lions locker room to draft an 0-16 team….just saying

  2. neverend1 says: Nov 23, 2010 4:26 PM

Oh just stop it Florio. Any random blogger on the internet like yourself can still look like a genius by ripping an idiot like Millen. Just what did you accomplish by exposing the obvious?

Matt Millen says dumb things every week on TV, everyone knows it and we don’t need a reminder everytime he does it. This piece was unnecessary

Please, Please, Please, Please NFLN get rid of Millen and Theisman and put someone else with Bob Papa.

Please it could be anyone else…. Please, please

Millen is an absolute moron! I watched that episode live and was thinking exactly that…how the heck did he ever get a job talking about football?! He sucks and I would tell it to his face if I ever met the guy.

Favre has ruined the vikings with some help from Chilly who created the whole damn mess. Frazier said he is in with Favre so here is to 6 more losses so they ALL can go away!!!

  5. cobrala says: Nov 23, 2010 4:37 PM

    I’m with sdisme.
NFLN makes itself look very bad with their Thursday Night broadcast booth.

Millen also is miffed as to why he keeps gaining weight while drinking light beer…

  7. snarkygurl says: Nov 23, 2010 5:06 PM

I saw this live and couldn’t believe how instantly fired up Millen was. Way over the top. These men are sports analysts employed to interpret for us laymen somewhat informed opinions on the NFL. Opinions being the operative word here, not insider knowledge. They are employed due to the fact that most of them have “been there, done that” and know how things work in the locker room.

The analysts are also entrusted to be unbiased and professional. Two traits that Matt Millen will never be accused of having.

  8. nfl4ever says: Nov 23, 2010 5:07 PM

That was an awkward moment on TV, would have liked to see Young say “That’s true and you aren’t in that locker room either”.

  9. stixzidinia says: Nov 23, 2010 5:11 PM

Matt Millen is another who is afflicted with Old Yeller Fever…..the utterly mistaken belief that an aging, mistake-prone, choke-artist that is BrINT Favre is somehow the difference between winning and losing. Misery loves company after all.

  10. andyprough says: Nov 23, 2010 5:23 PM

I like the little grin on Steve Young’s face. Looked like he was getting under Millen’s skin on purpose. That’s good stuff

  11. goodjet says: Nov 23, 2010 5:24 PM

The guys that try and protect their friends are an instant Turn The Channel, you just can’t listen to them. Whatever they say means absolutely nothing. Guys like Deon Sanders and Millen and some others. If I happen to hear them even by accident (because I never listen to them) I just hear Blah Blah Blah. All I can say is the match-ups on Thursday nights better be EXTREMELY compelling or it will be UNWATCHABLE due to how unbelievably horrible Millen and Theisman are. Even then I watch with the volume way way down so I really can’t even hear them. I kind of got into that habit when one of the night football broadcasts was using KornHollio or what ever that idiots name is.

Wade can get fired…Chilly can get fired…

Both of their resumes and reputations are far better than Millen’s.

And will any network hire either one of them?

    No.

While the thoughts of Millen playing the skin flute on some network exectutive are very disturbing, it is the only explanation for how he still has a job…

    Fire Millen…repeat ad nauseum…

  15. joetoronto says: Nov 23, 2010 5:34 PM

“Millen drove the Lions into the ground”?

The Lions were in the ground long before Millen got there and are still there, long after Millen left.

    Just the facts.

Also, Steve Young should shut his pie hole, or it’ll be shut permanently for him.

    Jerk off.

  16. hitwjk says: Nov 23, 2010 5:36 PM

How does the long running incompetent Matt Millen get a job at all? Let alone on a huge sports national network talking about a sport he damn near took to extinction in the city of Detroit??? Steve Young is clearly one of the classiest QB’s to ever play the game. Which shows because he took the high road when Millen got hard for Favre.

He is reduced and minimized by ESPN to broadcast along side Matt Millen and “Walleye” Stuart Scott.

Get a few CREDIBLE people to talk sports, Steve Young, Aikman, Marino, Simms etc.

Leave the worthless Marinelli loving MORON out of it. I could run a Mcdonalds better than Millen could run the Lions.

  17. snarkygurl says: Nov 23, 2010 5:40 PM

“And if anyone should know about not knowing “what’s going on in a freaking locker room,” it’s Matt Millen, former general manager of the Detroit Lions.”

    A+ quote of the day!!

  18. hockey64 says: Nov 23, 2010 5:41 PM

I usually don’t agree with Matt Millen but in this case Young doesn’t know what is going on in that organization. Young is iritating and pontificates too often.

  19. rayjayjohnsonjr says: Nov 23, 2010 5:41 PM

Millan=Hothead=Moron=Hotheaded Moron (and nothing more whatsoever)

  20. hitwjk says: Nov 23, 2010 5:42 PM

    @stixzidinia :

I could not agree more with your statement. And people dont want to say it because Old Yeller is such a great wrangler wearing american, he wouldnt jump back to play football at the last minute because of money? would he???? Just saying. He is so freakin’ paid, how could they bench him? It would be like wrapping a turd in $20 million bucks and flushing it down the toilet.

  21. phinfan says: Nov 23, 2010 5:46 PM

If Millen knew what went on in a locker room it would have been his head on a dart board.

Doesn’t Steve Young own more rings then Millen does?

  22. jwil444 says: Nov 23, 2010 5:48 PM

  23. ladybucsandsteelersnut says: Nov 23, 2010 5:51 PM

I watched the pregame exchange between Young and Millen – Millen seemed really ticked off at Young & I didn’t know why. Thanks for the info that he & Favre are huntin’-n-tractor-drivin’ buddies – explains alot.

I agree with you guys that it’s amazing Millen has 3 broadcasting jobs – he sucks at it, too. When I learned one of them was on NFLN, I finally had one reason to be glad I don’t have it!

  24. tommytd says: Nov 23, 2010 5:55 PM

Let’s see now…Steve Young’s past? Matt Millen’s past? I think I would probably be inclined to trust Mr. Young’s insights. Mr. Millen has no standing and his professional football resume is far from awe inspiring!

Damn, Stu “Lazy Eye” Scott looked a bit uncomfortartable in that video, but i can’t tell if it’s because Millen is getting pissed, or because he realized he’s on national TV with a 14 dollar tie and a 69 dollar suit….

  27. Wisconsin77 says: Nov 23, 2010 6:09 PM

Young is just jealous that he needed a team already stacked with Hall of Famers to win HIS Superbowl, whereas Favre started from scratch and took a team from the dumpsters to the penthouse.

  28. xtb3 says: Nov 23, 2010 6:10 PM

listen to these tv talking heads lavish praise on an offensive coordinator or a defensive coordinator if the players on the field make a big play or big stop.”brilliant”, “genius”, etc. BUT that also means his opposite coach on the other team has either failed or was completely outsmarted. Getting sick and tired of listening to the praise over and over and over of their co-workers when those commentators used to coach. To listen to Millen praise Marinelli as the “best coach” a man who worked for Millen and went 0-16 is sickening.

  29. bradyisgod says: Nov 23, 2010 6:14 PM

Listen folks…do yourself a favour and don’t watch anymore pregame shows or other talking heads with motives and axes to grind. Just tune in at kick off and watch the games. I’m telling you you’ll never go back to watching them again.

  30. SpartaChris says: Nov 23, 2010 6:19 PM

Matt Millen is a douche. His presence anywhere near an NFL Broadcast booth, let alone a team, is an insult to NFL fans and a complete slap in the face/kick in the jimmy for Lions fans. This is especially true when Millen spends time fawning over former Detroit personnel, or makes complimentary comments about guys he could have drafted.

Seriously, I implore anyone in a position of power who employs him and is reading this to get rid of that two bit ass clown.

  31. The Doctor says: Nov 23, 2010 6:20 PM

Watched every play from every game this year. And although Favre has not played great, especially with the overthrows last game, he is not the problem. Our O-line and our D-line is atrocious.

  33. theawkwardyears says: Nov 23, 2010 6:38 PM

The media’s opinion of Favre changes like the stock market. If has two amazing games they will be back onboard the love-fest and if he falters they will call for his head.

Internet sensationalism is one of the biggest problems we face in the modern age and arsonists like Florio are no different than Sean Hannity and Keith Olbermann

Most of these people are simply entertainers, and it is all in good fun.

When Babe Ruth retired he was the strikeout king and known for his un-clean living and sloppy lifestyle but now his name is synonymous with homer’s . Favre will be no different with his Int’s and Sexting exploits.

One day these same critics will line the streets to preach of Favre’s TD’s, Win’s and Starting Streak.

Whatever is selling at the moment.

  34. stixzidinia says: Nov 23, 2010 6:42 PM

This is exactly how Millen did business in Detroit….just tried bullying people. You can tell he’s the kind of guy that sank or swam with his decision out of stubborn pride once he made up his mind (even if he knew it was wrong) and didn’t bother getting insight from other people in the organization and around the league.

    ————————————————-

Ummm, yeah, actually not the facts at all. The Lions made the playoffs 6 times in the 90′s and went 9-7 in 2000. Millen took over in 2001. And the rest, as they say, is history.

  36. bebopa says: Nov 23, 2010 6:56 PM

Millen is a joke as far as football knowledge goes, everyone knows that. Thats why he will never get an NFL job again. He is one of many fans who think Favre can do no wrong, this is an old man. He is done, the Vikings have ruined their whole season trying to resurrect him.

  37. bjbroderick says: Nov 23, 2010 6:57 PM

This guy is still collecting a check from Detroit, and he was grossly overpaid, even for a run of the mill GM. Could he at least do the decent thing and disappear with his wads of our cash, and not flaunt the idiocy that drove the Lions into the ground?

  38. packrulzm says: Nov 23, 2010 7:28 PM

Here we go again. Yet another Favre apologist. While I agree that no one who’s not in the locker room can know what really has gone on, there’s no denying that Favre has had an undue amount of influence in the locker room and especially on the field. Look no further than the last 4th and 2 play against the Packers. Favre signalled to the sideline that the offense was not coming out and then promptly threw another horrible pass. Turn over on downs. Does anyone really care what millen thinks? He’s just an overhyped idiot who knows nothing about football. Just ask all the Detroit fans how intelligent he is. 3 WR drafted in the first round 3 years in a row! What a tool!

  39. jkearse2005 says: Nov 23, 2010 7:28 PM

Who can even stand this guy. Why does tv want to bring a guy in who could go down as the worst GM in history to analyze football? I didnt think broadcasting could be any worse than TBS baseball until I watch the ravens on Thursday night two weeks ago. Someone needs to put him on the unemployment line.

  40. tommytd says: Nov 23, 2010 7:48 PM

    ===================================
You’re absolutely right. I swore off that pre-game crap years ago and could care less about watching them now. Here’s another treat…start your DVR and record the first 60-90 minutes of game action, while you do something else. Then sit back, turn on your recording of the game and FFW past all the mindless commercials. It’s great!

  41. pioniere says: Nov 23, 2010 9:02 PM

The guy was a complete idiot as a GM, and continues to demonstrate that he is an idiot broadcaster with every appearance he makes. I would love to see him dumped by the networks. There are for more objective and knowledgeable ex-pros or ex-GMs out there than that clown!

  42. ncsteeler says: Nov 23, 2010 9:36 PM

If I could do one thing to improve Thurs. games, I would take off Theismann’s head; although I think he would just keep talking in that annoying voice of his. If you can block out the Detroit years (quite the block, I admit) Millen isn’t all that bad. In the 90′s before the Lions debacle he was thought of as a possible successor to John Madden on MNF. He has his prejudices and favorites like any of the commentators, but isn’t as bad as many of the color men on Sunday broadcasts (faint praise).

  43. heavythumb says: Nov 24, 2010 9:12 AM

To be fair, the Lions have been bad, with the exception of a few of the Barry Sanders years, for a long, long time.

I’m no Millen fan, but to suggest he “drove the Detroit Lions into the ground” is a bit of a stretch. He might have been a poor GM, but they already sucked.

  44. jimmy1smith says: Nov 24, 2010 9:55 AM

Matt Millen will go down in history as the worse GM in all sports, not just football. With that dubious honor, the NFL Network saw fit to employ him as an analyst. Beyond being incompetent, he also sought out BrINT Favre’s insight on a Packers – Lions game when Favre was with the Jets which makes him a sleazeball.

Out of all the ex players in the NFL, I am dumbfounded that the NFL Network can’t find somebody other than Matt Millen to put on the air.

  45. muchmaligned says: Nov 24, 2010 12:51 PM

    @Joetoronto,

Each time you post about how “Detroit was already in the ground…” you simply expose yourself as yet another fan who doesn’t know what the hell he is talking about.

Millen is a douche bag and a moron. Steve Young is a moron and a douche bag. If that dude isn’t an example of post concussion syndrome, no one is. They should have thrown him out with the Emmitt.

  46. thehighhat says: Nov 24, 2010 1:02 PM

Steve Young = Hall of Fame
Scat Millen = Hall of Shame

After bending over the city of Detroit for years, Millen is now bending over the rest of the football loving world (pro’s and college) infecting us with his moronic “wisdom”.
