Vince Young texts Jeff Fisher an apology

vinceyoung

Vince Young seems to be having second thoughts about his decision to walk out on Jeff Fisher. And now Young is in damage control mode.

ESPN reported today that a source close to Young told Adam Schefter that Young had texted Fisher and apologized on Tuesday. The apology came two days after Young reportedly spewed obscenities at Fisher and stormed out of the Titans’ locker room.

According to the report, Young’s text message thanked Fisher for the opportunity to play for the Titans, wished the team good luck for the rest of the season, asked for Fisher to have faith and confidence in him moving forward, and told Fisher that he and Young both want to win a Super Bowl. (Young presumably had to send more than one text message to get all that groveling across.)

The apology is a sign that Young knows he has screwed up his relationship with his coach, and passing word of the apology on to Schefter is a sign that Young knows he has screwed up his public image as well.

It’s too late for Young’s apology to do anything about the 2010 season, as the Titans are shutting him down because of a thumb injury. And given the way Fisher feels about his quarterback cursing at him in the locker room, it might be too late for Young to do anything about his career in Tennessee. But this apology is a step toward trying to get back in Fisher’s good graces.

Or its a way for Vince to rub shoulders with Bud Adams and say “hey, I want to be a Titan and get along with Coach, just like you want”.

So now if Fisher decides not to play nice, he looks like the bad guy.

    Nice play VY

If he really understood the need to apologize, he wouldn’t have chosen texting as the method to do it.

Jeff Fisher should apologize for his god complex.

How is there no mention in this article of how stupid it is that Young apologized via text?

Is Vince a 14 year old girl? Go to Fischer, look him eye to eye and tell him you screwed up.

  6. ravensrule says: Nov 24, 2010 2:37 PM

Texted an apology, how manly. Im sure this reassures everything Fisher thinks about him. Hilarious

Insult a Fisher to his face, apologize thru text message(s)…yet another sign that Vince Young needs to grow up

  8. ajtexans says: Nov 24, 2010 2:41 PM

One agent seeing $$$ signs at risk makes the decision to apologize pretty easy.

  9. jeffro11 says: Nov 24, 2010 2:43 PM

Big man, apology via text. Says more about him than the tantrum he threw.

  10. mooney24 says: Nov 24, 2010 2:45 PM

Well, it’s never too late to stop acting like a toolbag. But this won’t be enough.

What’s not mentioned, and more intriguing – is how Adams seems to be firmly in Young’s corner while at the same time…Fisher is making it rather clear that he won’t be joining Adams in that corner. It’s not certain which one of these men will be elsewhere next season.

  12. nlfguy007 says: Nov 24, 2010 2:49 PM

I wonder if he included a “Brett Favre” style picture of his “junk” in the apology.

  13. bkilby13 says: Nov 24, 2010 2:50 PM

The problem is that texting an apology is another indicator of the immaturity level of Vince Young. He doesn’t have the respect to speak to Fisher in person! That is ridiculous!

  14. florioisatool says: Nov 24, 2010 2:50 PM

But he didn’t attempt talk to him directly? This child still has a lot of growing up to do.

Vince needs to go to a place where he can build continuity with the Head Coach. A place where Coach doesn’t undermine his players. Meantime, Fisher is working on another 8-8 season

  26. harborlaw says: Nov 24, 2010 3:10 PM

    Texting an apology.
What is he in grade school.
Be a man and call the guy on the phone or better yet jump on the next plane to Nashville and meet him at his front door. A text is not an apology – especially when you are trying to keep your 12 milliond dollar a year job.

If Vince (or you) really thinks he’s going to find a more stable situation with a more supportive coach than he’s had the last five years, especially behaving hte way he’s behaved since arriving with these repeated temper tantrums…I’d like some of what you’re smoking.

I couldn’t agree more! Nothing says insincerity like a text message apology. This kid had better grow up if he thinks he has a chance in the NFL.

Sadly Coach Fisher didn’t receive the text that VY sent as it was intercepted and returned for 6.

Did he throw the phone into the crowd when he was done?

  36. goodjet says: Nov 24, 2010 3:34 PM

Texts Shmexed. It means nothing, it’s the start of nothing. Any five year old could do it. How the guy reacts to pressure, under pressure, mental pressure and physical pressure has to change for him to be successful. I’m sure Jeff Fisher really couldn’t care less about it and unless it came from Young while he was studying his game (the game) in the film room or on a practice field somewhere working on his footwork it’s completely and totally meaningless. Less then meaningless really because Young probably thinks it was work or something.

  37. jhorton83 says: Nov 24, 2010 3:40 PM

This is another example of his immaturity though. If you want to apologize to someone like a man, you TALK to them. You don’t text them.

  38. benjaminbreeg11 says: Nov 24, 2010 3:40 PM

Like some of the comments, it seems much more a PR ploy aimed at the owner and the public.

If VY really wanted to apoligize to Fisher, face to face or a phone call would be the way to go about it.

Because when your Career is on the Brink and you’ve acted like an idiot in front of 65,000 people + a national TV audience what is the proper means of communication??? Texting of course.

Maybe he should have Tweeted it instead.

    Rusty Smith, ha!

  41. backindasaddle says: Nov 24, 2010 3:56 PM

The guy has values issues. I think he simply wasn’t raised with an eye towards teaching him proper values. He displays a poor work ethic, flies off the handle with immature little hissy fits, shoots his mouth off, only applies himself to the level necessary to get comfortable…and then starts sluffing off again…etc…etc…etc…

He’s his own worst enemy. I now look at him as Jamarcus Russell without a weight problem.

  42. smo05d says: Nov 24, 2010 3:56 PM

no it’s not a step in the right direction–it was a text. he could’ve had someone else type it and send it. A real step would’ve been having the guts to call Fisher and apologize over the phone–or better yet, in person.

  43. tombradyswig says: Nov 24, 2010 3:59 PM

  44. tdhawk says: Nov 24, 2010 4:16 PM

Oh how precious, I’d love to see this supposed (non) apology. Probably goes something like this, “I’m so sorry you feel the way you do……” Sorta like what one hears from the wifey.

  45. boblavoie says: Nov 24, 2010 4:19 PM

You Guys are bad real bad, so I’ll join you.

The reason he text him is because he got his brother to help him with the spelling and grammar. And he got his agent to edit it!

  48. rmshart says: Nov 24, 2010 4:34 PM

Few years ago, Norm Chow, Vince’s first NFL offensive coordinator, criticizes Vince’s poor work ethic. Hence forth Vince and Chow don’t get along. At end of season, Jeff Fisher fires Chow. Few years later Fisher discovers Vince to be a whinny slacker who doesn’t take criticism well. Geez, never would have seen that one coming

That was priceless marvsleezy. Seriously, a man texting an apology to another man is pathetic. Email is bad enough, but texting? Even if you actually call the number and leave a voice mail, it says more than a cowardly text.

  54. tombrookshire says: Nov 24, 2010 5:13 PM

Adams has already said that Young will return, thus overruling his coach. So, he has drawn a line in the sand and dared JF to cross it. Seems like Young has a job, and JF maybe does not. Personally, the team should probably move on in regards to both men.

  55. elmoron says: Nov 24, 2010 5:18 PM

Should’ve thought about texting his original, expletive-filled tirade instead of doing it live to Fischer in the locker room. It might’ve allowed second thoughts and avoided the whole situation.

  56. andyprough says: Nov 24, 2010 5:34 PM

    Crazy!

  59. macjacmccoy says: Nov 24, 2010 9:58 PM

Wow Florio for someone who loves conspiracy and is as cynical as you I cant believe you didnt jump on the Bud Adams angle. I feel the invisible hand of the Titans owner pushing Young to write this message.

You pointed out multiple times the past week that this is going to come down to Fisher vs Young. That 1 or the other would be gone after this season. You have also said that Adams is a big Young fan. So couldnt this be a scheme by Adams to make a case for firing Fisher with cause?

Im sure Adams knows Fisher better then anybody. He knows how stubborn and bullheaded the guy can be. He also knows that Fisher never really wanted Young as his qb . So isnt it possible he also knew that Fisher would never accept an apology from Young. And by having Young write and apology to Fisher and making it public and Fisher not accepting it give Adams a reason to fire him? Which could give him a reason not to pay him if he is fired.

Obviously I dont know if that is happening or not but it does seem like theres a possible hidden agenda behind this public apology.
