They did so because it was known that this was a common practice throughout the league up until that year, and a memo was sent out to all teams to stop doing it during the off-season – Goodell wanted to put the whole thing to bed. The Pats kept doing it (for one game!) and were punished very harshly for it with a first round pick.

Seriously, you guys act like teams never send advanced scouts to game, or watch video on opposing teams. And for the millionth time, if you think Belichick came up with this on his own you are lying to yourself. He was taught this practice on Ted Marchibroda’s coaching staff 30 years ago.

Both a few years ago and right now, what I actually see around the various blogs and message boards are Patriots fans (as well as fans of other teams and even the honest “Patriot haters”) presenting *facts* while the bashers just throw out words like “tainted” and “cheater” and not only never present any actual facts, but never respond to any that anybody else presents, either.

Facts such as that *more* than one NFL coach has stated over and over that what the Patriots did was common practice in the NFL. You’ve even had Jimmy Johnson say that he did it with his Super Bowl teams in Dallas.

Facts such as that every some “problem” can be found dominant team in history, such as the 49ers who played fast and loose with their rosters, or the Steelers who, heck, I can’t even remember what they did anymore, but it was something.

And the fact is that it doesn’t matter what the Steelers did, because it’s without question that every NFL team does whatever they possibly can to win, whether you want to call it “cheating,” “cheap,” or anything else. Whatever the Steelers or anyone else did, it doesn’t make them stand out from anybody else. I hate the Steelers and the Cowboys, but you know what, when they won, they won! If they did this or that, you can be assured that all of their opponents were doing the same thing or worse. That’s the NFL. Heck, that’s the NCAA, and even most high school football, at least in the big football states.

The degree to which people will ignore facts to hate on – not just the Patriots, but whatever team they’d like to – is amazing. Take as an example the post above:

Really? Are you serious? The fact that the Patriots camera operations were “coached and practiced” is news? Are you kidding me? This is nothing new. That was the *point* when it came out in 2007 – it was something the Patriots had systematically done for a while (and as I said, so had everyone else, but that’s beside the point). The fact is that there *isn’t* anything new here, but that doesn’t stop bashers from trying to use it anyways, and so once again, they ignore the facts (in this case, that this is old news) and try to present it as something that helps their case.
