Cortland Finnegan told Texans Andre Johnson hit was coming

andrejohnson

A moment before Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan and Texans receiver Andre Johnson fought on the field Sunday, Finnegan told the Texans’ sideline to get ready.

According to Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle, Finnegan looked toward the Texans’ sideline and yelled, “Watch this,” right before the ball was snapped, and then proceeded to smack Johnson at the start of the play.

Although Johnson was the one who was really landing punches in the ensuing fight, Finnegan’s reputation as a dirty player precedes him, while Johnson’s reputation as a good player and good guy will probably earn him some points.

And the news that Finnegan told the Texans something was coming before the fight indicates that Finnegan knew exactly what he was starting. Which means Finnegan may be the one who gets hit harder by the league office, even though Johnson was hitting harder on the field.

Finnegan represents what is wrong with the NFL players of today. He has no class and no respect for the game. He is also quite dumb. Intentionally starting a fight with the star player of the other team is absurd. This guy aspires to be recognized as the league’s dirtiest player. Johnson was wrong to retaliate but it would be hard not to want to put this punk in his place. They should both get fined in excess of $100K and Johnson should be suspended for 1 game…Finnegan should sit for at least 2 more games. He instigated the incident and if this story is true, it shows that it was premeditated and not a result of “the heat of the moment”

  2. jbl429 says: Nov 29, 2010 12:05 PM

Finnegan’s a douche. He knew that game was over, so he wanted to see the Texans lose their best player when they really need him next week. I hope Johnson gets away with a slap on the wrist and Finnegan loses playing time and a game check or 2.

  3. dldavidlong says: Nov 29, 2010 12:08 PM

albert hanesworth stepping on an opponent. vince young attitude. pacman jones. and now cortland finnegan.

  4. dolphinphan says: Nov 29, 2010 12:10 PM

Andre is one of the guys I will forever admit I would never want to fight. That uppercut had serious ramifications if it landed.

  5. cobrala says: Nov 29, 2010 12:12 PM

DL is right, where there’s smoke there’s fire. And where there’s a lot of smoke over many years there’s Jeff Fisher.

  6. dolphinphan says: Nov 29, 2010 12:12 PM

If both players don’t receive a fine and at least a one game suspension, I will be shocked. I for one don’t want to see Andre miss time, but the NFL is a no nonsense league, and I can’t see Goodell not taking action. No chance he tolerates fighting.

  7. packerrube13 says: Nov 29, 2010 12:13 PM

Those were some nice punches landed by AJ. I love that guy! Still can’t believe He went down to Finnegan’s level though, with the score as it was and already having scored on him once. He could have said “Scoreboard” or “where were you on my TD catch” and nothing more needed to be said.

  8. beastmode2 says: Nov 29, 2010 12:15 PM

Dude, Andre punished that punk. My only concern is that my fantasy squad is screwed. If hes gone this week, Nate Washington or Mike Goodson?

  9. jackhall00 says: Nov 29, 2010 12:15 PM

Man, Finnegan is a dirty player but he sure isn’t tough. He got his azz whooped and was backing off waiting for it to be broken up. What a wuss.

  10. really35 says: Nov 29, 2010 12:15 PM

The best part is Finnegan was about to get the crap beat out of him. Johnson punched him twice before he even knew what was going on! I love it when guys start the fight and then get the crap beat out of them.

  11. antalicus says: Nov 29, 2010 12:17 PM

All I can say is its about time someone beat that crap out of that dude.

  12. ladybucsandsteelersnut says: Nov 29, 2010 12:18 PM

Like I said on a thread about this last night, Finnegan wasn’t playing worth a crap all game, so he had to jack up his usual cheap play to a higher level. I was happy Johnson knocked the crap out of him. I only hope that Finnegan is the only one to be suspended. Johnson deserves a fine, and that’s all, IMO. However, the league, and Lord Godell have not gotten much right at all this season, so we sure can’t count on them to be fair in this instance either.

  13. Kaz says: Nov 29, 2010 12:18 PM

Sticks and stones……..Unless Finny hit first the punishment should be equal at the very least.

  14. Andre's Johnson says: Nov 29, 2010 12:20 PM

Look, I am a biased Texans and Andre Johnson fan. Full disclosure.

Okay, having said that, Cortland Vaginagan is a crap bag who deserves suspension. Based on what Richard Justice is saying (and the video footage), Johnson was clearly retaliating to Vaginagan’s antics. Vaginagan hit him in the facemask to set the incident in motion.

    Vaginagan: huge fine and suspension.

    Johnson: huge fine.

  15. saturn1111 says: Nov 29, 2010 12:21 PM

I know Fisher has a lot of respect in “league circles” and the media falls all over itself to praise the guy, but just consider things without the media goggles on:

    – from day one it has been clear that he wasn’t happy with the Vince Young pick. Don’t you think that in a different environment, some other coach might have been able to grow those talents and grow the player into a man?

    – notice how the media backed off the VY vs. JF story after Fisher couldn’t wait to 1., tell them about Vince Young’s texted apology, and then 2., offer his own interpretation of those actions as not being manly? You know *why* the media backed off after that? Because their boy Fisher’s actions in that moment were *at least* as childish as VY’s, and indefensible.

    – now Finnegan starts completely premeditated trouble, too. The coach has to be implicated on some level, doesn’t he?

If this nonsense was happening under Mangini’s watch in his first year at Cleveland, the media would be BURYING him.

  16. JSpicoli says: Nov 29, 2010 12:21 PM

Like no one ever talks to the opposing sideline. Oh the humanity!

This site has it’s sights on Cortland. It kinda makes me like him more.

  17. homelanddefense says: Nov 29, 2010 12:22 PM

there is a difference between a hard nosed player and a total jerk, Finnegan has definitely crossed that line

  18. backindasaddle says: Nov 29, 2010 12:23 PM

Finnegan picked a fight and made sure it would happen. He’s a certified turd. Unfortunately Johnson will be fined too. I can only hope that one of those punches landed solidly on the turds cranium. That is about the only justice that will be served in the matter.

  19. mn1bjb says: Nov 29, 2010 12:23 PM

Finnegan got what he deserved. Too bad Andre didn’t get more time to whoop his ass longer.

  20. JSpicoli says: Nov 29, 2010 12:23 PM

Starting a fight with one of the best players on the opposing team is actually smart finsfan, and considered old school.

He accomplished his goal, got him tossed and should not have been tossed himself as he did not throw a closehanded punch, or any punch at all.

    Ref’s fail.

  21. JSpicoli says: Nov 29, 2010 12:25 PM

To the girls getting their skirts bunched up above me.

There is no way they get any suspension.

  22. maddog111 says: Nov 29, 2010 12:25 PM

I can’t think of another player in the NFL as universally respected as Andre Johnson. I’m assuming Goodell’s got to suspend him, but I’d love it if he gave him a slap on the wrist, and made Finnegan sit two games. That, in addition to getting his ass beaten by a WR.

  23. backindasaddle says: Nov 29, 2010 12:26 PM

ALSO!….What are YOU going to do JEFF FISHER???? You typically get all all up-i-ty and sanctimonious about integrity and ethics etc…. Are you going to discipline your little turd????

  24. medialovesthecowboys says: Nov 29, 2010 12:30 PM

Really wish AJ, had taken the high road here. I’m sure its hard to ignore a Leperchaun in a Titans Uni, buzzing around with more annoyance than a Mosquito, tho.

  25. oumoonunit says: Nov 29, 2010 12:31 PM

Andre Johnson is my new favorite player. Finnegan looks like a member of kid and play.

Yeah, because cheap shots and fights NEVER happened in the Good Ol’ Days of the NFL, right? Right?

    Peace
    Ty

  27. favreflavoredwaffles says: Nov 29, 2010 12:43 PM

    They’ll both get fined heavily.

AJ will probably get the suspension, if they both don’t. If you watch the video…you can see AJ shoving the official and throwing his hands off of him…..that alone may get him the boot.

Unfortunately for AJ fans and owners…the League needs to set the bar high and yank both of these guys.

  28. PFTiswhatitis says: Nov 29, 2010 12:44 PM

Coach Fisher condones dirty play, he may even promote it. He needs a stern warning from the league and Finnegan should receive the higher fine and longer suspension. Johnson was goaded into it. It was nice to see him beat the crap out of Cortland Finnegan though.

  29. 4dabears says: Nov 29, 2010 12:47 PM

I would say Finnegan is a highly overrated player. However to be overrated you need some sort of skill- other than just being a typical punk.

  30. jhorton83 says: Nov 29, 2010 12:49 PM

Cortland Finnegan actively strives to be the dirtiest player in the game. He’s admitted as much. This won’t be the last time another player gets fed up with his crap.

    ——————————————————

He probably won’t do anything. I can’t stand (or understand) the Jeff Fisher love fest. 17 seasons no Super Bowls. Outside of Nashville, what NFL team would give you that kind of patience?? Its like the love affair with Peyton Manning (12 years, one ring) people saying he’s the best of all time when Brady (9 years, 3 rings) is clearly better.

    RUCK FOGER

  32. steelerdynasty2010 says: Nov 29, 2010 12:53 PM

sorry folks, but i bet nobody’s getting suspended here. according the league (or maybe it was just a talking head on BSPN), but in the league’s eyes, being ejected from a contest is considered equivalent to a game suspension which is why Seymour was not suspended for his actions last week.

It is neither smart, nor old school…it is bush league garbage by an inferior player. It could potentially be beneficial (not smart) if it happened at the beginning of the game but it was after the game was well in hand. Finnegan is a mediocre player that gets name recognition because of crap like this. He instigated the fight and both players ripped each other’s helmets off. Just because Finnegan was not capable of throwing a punch in the midst of his ass-whipping does not mean he shouldn’t be suspended. There is no place for this kind of behavior. Both players deserve huge fines and suspensions but Finnegan’s mentality and history should net him the harsher discipline.

  34. texansfight says: Nov 29, 2010 12:55 PM

If your name is Cortland and you went to Samford, probably not a good idea to mess with somebody named Dre from the U.

  35. krow101 says: Nov 29, 2010 12:56 PM

One thing you have to hand to Finnegan. He’s turned the once honorable Jeff Fisher into an alibi spewing little whoor. No small thing.

couldnt have said it better myself!!!! dont forget that Eli is an “elite” qb too, and that p. rivers is better than eli and Ben who are a combined 3 rings ahead of him.

Nice to see Andre Johnson beat that little punk down. No way should he get suspended.

  38. fartography says: Nov 29, 2010 1:01 PM

This is the kind of thing Rodman used to do against Bird and Barkley. Except Rodman somehow was smarter and did it earlier in games.

After seeing that fight I don’t think Finnegan will ever try that again. Nor will anyone else against AJ.

  39. gomichigan says: Nov 29, 2010 1:02 PM

suspend them both for the rest of the year. This is not hockey

  40. meso0rnery says: Nov 29, 2010 1:09 PM

There is NO way Johnson should get suspended. When Richard Seymour punched Ben in the face last week, he only got fined $25,000. The explanation for the fine, and no suspension, was that the incident was treated as a fight. They have a fine scale that they use for fights. A first time offender will receive a $10,000 fine. A 2 time offender will receive a $25,000 fine. So IF the league wants to be CONSISTENT(LOL) , Johnson should get a $10,000 fine, and Finnegan should get $25,000.

  41. chrisbermansdoublechin says: Nov 29, 2010 1:09 PM

just wondering WHY Jeff Fisher is so highly regarded with the likes of Chris Mortensen, when the Titans have been singled out 2 or 3 times this year for their dirty play, & the thought that Fisher either teaches or preaches pushing things to this level. As for Finnegan, what kind of guy gets his ass kicked, backs away & has a grin on his face about it?

  42. Beer Cheese Soup says: Nov 29, 2010 1:11 PM

I said after the Richard Seymour wrist-slap that more of this would be coming, and I was right.

Refuse to answer media questions: pay $25k. Punch a dude in the face: pay $25k. I can tell you which one I would rather do…

  43. chrisbermansdoublechin says: Nov 29, 2010 1:14 PM

interesting that Jeff Fisher leaks stuff to Chris Mortensen about Vince Young, to make him look bad … but he doesn’t have a problem with Finnegan, making him [FISHER} look bad

  44. weareluckytohavemikeflorio says: Nov 29, 2010 1:15 PM

If indeed it was a premeditated act which it appears it was, he will be suspended for at least 1 if not 2 games based on his history as a wannabethug.
johnson, has 0 blemishes on his record in 9 yrs and was the Respondent, not the initiater here.
he gets fined a game check at worst.
If roger suspends andre he is saying to every wannabe thug that its ok to start a fight and grab someone by the facemask with intent to perform nonfootball acts.
Finnegan, i coulda swore i took a Cortland 1st thing this morning, sure feels like it.
if he wants to continue to be the dirty player he is, he can count on teams making it their duty to make sure he isnt able to step on the field again. sorta like firing someone with cause but just a lil different.

  45. chrisbermansdoublechin says: Nov 29, 2010 1:22 PM

Andre Johnson apologized for his actions after the game … do you think the santimonious Jeff Fisher would advise Finnegan to do the same??? Fisher seems to be an “EXPERT” on how to apologise “LIKE A MAN”

  46. dukieforlife says: Nov 29, 2010 1:22 PM

Remind anybody of Robin Ventura vs. Nolan Ryan? Lesson: Don’t start what you can’t finish!

  47. afc22 says: Nov 29, 2010 1:23 PM

they should treat it the way the NHL does….the instigator gets a far worse punishment. Give Johnson a fine and suspend Finnegan

  48. ugk612 says: Nov 29, 2010 1:31 PM

Well we know that Finnegan can catch, he caught a couple good ones in the head!
Kinda agree with dl & cobrala there’s been a few dirty plays down there in Tennessee. Hmmmm? Might warrant investigating.

  49. thribolde says: Nov 29, 2010 1:34 PM

Johnson had no choice but to take care of this guy. He told the team he was going to do it and then did. Is Andre Johnson supposed to bend over and take that? I know you should settle things on the field of play, but he had already done that, and carrot top couldn’t handle it. If Johnson had not taken care of business the way that he did, then Finnigan would have won and Andre would’ve been the turd that let it happen.
These are violent enormous men and if a boy wants to talk sh!t then, he’ll have to get it beaten out of him sometimes.

  50. thribolde says: Nov 29, 2010 1:36 PM

oh and with the season nearing an end for Johnson and the Texans, whatever the punishment will be totally worth it…

  51. xli2006 says: Nov 29, 2010 1:41 PM

Does anyone even like Cortland Finnegan?

Seriously, even Titans fans? This guy can’t just play the game. He has to turn it into some thugged out alley duel every Sunday. He’ll jaw with anybody and constantly.

Andre Johnson did what every other WR wanted to.

I’d imagine both get a hefty fine, likely a suspension, and Cortland Finnegan gets a stranglehold on the “Dirtiest Player in the NFL” award.

“Watch This”, Finnegan said right before Andre Johnson beat his face in. Nice. Famous last words, “Watch this”.

  52. frank booth says: Nov 29, 2010 2:09 PM

What’s really important here is that if Andre Johnson is suspended, will that make things more difficult for Arian Foster, one of my fantasy running backs?

  53. rangenius says: Nov 29, 2010 2:14 PM

  54. fmwarner says: Nov 29, 2010 2:15 PM

Part of me wishes AJ had taken the high road, but the other part of me is glad he whupped Finnegan’s ass. It’s hard to go around acting like a badass when a WIDE RECEIVER knocks you out. Finnegan is a punk, and I hope he gets it a lot worse from Roger than AJ does. He should also get an extra fine for that Pauly D haircut of his.

  55. electstat says: Nov 29, 2010 2:51 PM

No doubt should be suspensions. Comparing to the Seymore “fight” is apples to oranges. Seymore slapped Roth while he had his helmet on. Johnson punched Finnegan’s unprotected head after an illegal hands to the face…and then touched the ref.

  56. zaggs says: Nov 29, 2010 3:00 PM

    JSpicoli,

Yes idiot Finnegan will get and EARN a suspension not to mention he earned his ejection because he DID strike a player. If you pulled your head away from Fisher’s crotch long enough you would have seen both of Finnegan’s hands, close fist, go right to Johnson’s face.
The league cannot say a player should not defend themselves. Hence Johnson will get less punishment as he was defending himself and first time offense.

  57. flyinhighwithvick says: Nov 29, 2010 3:01 PM

Finnegan should be in jail, which is probably where he’d be anyway if it weren’t for football. I don’t blame Andre Johnson one bit for throwing a few haymakers.

Doesn’t matter. Seymour’s hit to the face was classified as a fight. Johnson vs Finnegan was a fight. Under the NFL Fine list, a fight is a fight, and a fight for a first time offender is worth $10,000. A fight for a multiple offender is worth $25,000. It doesn’t matter if helmets are off. While the Seymour hit was not a “fight” in most peoples’ eyes, they don’t have a “Fine Scale” for sucker punches. Therefor, they must classify it as a fight.

  59. joetoronto says: Nov 29, 2010 5:35 PM

It takes two to tango, or fight.

Seymour bitch slapped softy and he hit the ground like he’d been shot. He then proceeded to flop around like a beached whale.

That is NOT a fight, that’s a bitch hitting the deck.
