Hip injury ends Frank Gore’s season

The good news for the 49ers is that, despite a crappy 4-7 record, a 27-6 win over the Cardinals has put them only one game out of first place in the NFC West.  The bad news is that the Niners will continue their quest for fool’s gold without the cornerstone of their offense.

Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports — and we have confirmed — that running back Frank Gore will miss the rest of the season with a hip injury suffered on Monday night.

Gore was running hard early, but he made a walk in the first quarter to the locker room with a trainer.  He returned in full gear, returning briefly but then exiting and not returning.

The injury opened the door for former Eagles workhorse Brian Westbrook.  After getting only five carries in 10 games, Westbrook ran the ball 23 times for 136 yards and a touchdown on Monday night, averaging 5.9 yards per carry.

  1. Westbrook and the ‘Niners travel to Green Bay Sunday. At least he is accustomed to cold weather playing conditions.

  2. Now if they lose V. Davis, 2 starting linebackers, starting safety, starting R guard, & 6 other players in the rotation they’ll have 12 players on IR like the Packers!

  3. It was nice to see B-West back running hard, but let’s be real – he won’t be able to be the feature back for any team over the long haul, let alone a SF team that runs all the time. He’s 10 touches a game max at this point in his career.

  4. Benny from LA Law would have had Brian Westbrook getting 10 touches a game all season. The Niners coaching staff figures that out 11 games in ? and only after Gore goes down? That is pretty weak, COME Onnnnnn MAN!

  5. LOL @ godofwine. “Putting something together” lol, like a 33 year first shutout at home vs. TB?

AZ sucks and sucks worse against the niners. Bad matchup i guess but they stink against the niners. Watch the niners when they get out of division. Except the Rams, who can beat them, and maybe Seattle. lol

Too bad about Gore. Hips are serious anyway and for a running back? Could be game over.
