Harrison has been the crucified one on the league's emphasis on these types of hits. The hits by Ngata and McClain will surely draw a fine but saying that because they didn't draw a penalty means there are different rules for different players isn't true. Not every one of Harrison's fines came on a play where he was initially flagged. Wait for the fines to come out first. They still probably won't be as high as Harrison's though because Harrison has made his situation a more high profile matter and is repeating the behavior.

The "bottom line" is that the league has completely different rules for different players. Harrison can makes a hit that's at best borderline and receives an enormous fine. Someone punches Ben in the head after a play and is fined the minimum (imagine Harrison doing that to Brady). Ben's get a broken nose after a hit to the head and not even a flag. Heath Miller is knocked out of the game after a flagrant helmet to helmet hit and no flag.

I know you were responding to everyone as a whole and I am not sure what everyone has said at all times. I never disagreed with the fact that there are different degrees of a crime. My point is that, regardless of the degree charged, rape or domestic abuse is still a crime, a serious crime at that.

My main point of contention with Deb is that she displays a propensity to blame the victim, "You’re demonstrating the same mentality as those who equate a woman who willingly drinks herself into oblivion and willingly climbs into bed with a man then later claims she was too drunk to consent with a woman who was minding her own business and was suddenly violently attacked...Being willingly drunk and promiscuous does not equal being violently attacked.”

Her arguments mirror the disturbing train of thought that a person deserves the crimes against them if they put themselves in a certain position. This essentially gives the actual criminal a free pass because "their impulses were tempted and they were unable to restrain themselves."

I never said Ben did anything. And yes, everyone is innocent until proven guilty. The argument is broader than your team. Of course the criminal justice system recognizes degrees of a crime but whether or not a person who abuses or rapes another did so without an element necessary for a more severe degree does not mean that person did no wrong.

In regards to Harrison, whether or not he is a "dirty player" is not really the issue in my mind. The issue is that everyone has received the same notice. The game can be played at a high and physical level without hits with the helmet. Harrison can deliver the same type of blow with a shoulder and not his helmet. (E.g., Bart Scott sack on Ben from a few years back). The bottom line is that Harrison and your team have been put on notice, as every other player and team, and they are the only ones that are continually whining about being targeted. I know intelligence isn't a high priority but c'mon, they can't figure it out?

I'll leave your "ASK ANYONE WHO HAS ACTUALLY PLAYED THE GAME" comment aside and not take the bait. But I will say this. I've played the game, and not just some junior league or Senior year and done b.s. While playing you have hard hits and you are taught to play aggressively and hit a certain way. Tackling with your helmet first is not the universal instruction. As well, when you play the game, if you are regularly called for UR you make it a point to address it. You don't keep doing the things you've been warned against and then give an "ah shucks, no one likes me anymore" excuse.

Deb, spellmethis, beercheese, majik etc. quite the interesting exchange you all have going on here. just some observations:
I dont really think Deb is "defending" one kind of abuse or another, i think she's just pointing out there there are differences between the actual physical nature of the abuse, and in fact the law agrees in most instances. It's why there are varying degrees of criminal offense (ex. 1st degree, 2nd degree, aggravated, armed, etc.). all of which apply to assault charges as well.
in regards to her defense of ben. i think its rather admirable that SOMEONE still believes in a presumption of innocence until proven guilty. so many others have been willing to take an ESPN report at face value and just assume the man is guilty just because he was accused. whether you agree with HER or not, you cannot argue with the evidence (or lack thereof in this instance) that points to exactly what she's been arguing on everything of hers that i've read....he didnt rape anyone and should be left alone...also, if she's actually a journalist as she says, it further explains her insistence on getting the facts right and her
unusual breadth of knowledge on the topic.
in regards to defending harrison, i'm with her all the way (the spirit of her arguments, not necessarily the arguments themselves). he's playing the SAME way he did when everyone
sang his praises and named him defensive POY. Only now there is renewed emphasis on these
rules is he all of a sudden "dirty". the fact is that the rules are ridiculous (yes, i understand that its the way things are now and he's going to have to change the way he plays because they are not going to change the rules) and conflict with everything that anyone who plays football is taught. no one on a football field with equipment is defenseless unless they are in mid-air (and even then the obvious solution is DONT JUMP). vulnerable yes, but defenseless no. you know what you signed up for and you know that you need to be paying attention to what is going on around you...PERIOD... if you doubt this, ASK ANYONE WHO HAS ACTUALLY PLAYED THE GAME with any measure of success. the way he plays is aggressive, violent, dangerous, and brutal, and maybe all of those things excessively so, but that doesnt make him dirty. Dirty players intentionally
try to inflict injury, take PEDs, hit after the whistle (i'll give you the VY suplex, but that was an aberration), take out knees, etc. I'm sure there are those of you out there who will argue that James is all of those things, but i just dont buy it. I just dont see how he would have been voted defensive POY if he was all those things. he's a stubborn SOB who i
hope will accept the changes he needs to make if only because he going to get himself suspended at a really inconvenient time for us. the man is a phenonenal athlete and competitor and simply needs to adapt his style of play to the rules of the league in which he plays and compensates him handsomely. its such a shame that so many find it necessary to cast him as everything wrong with the nfl when all he's really doing is clinging to exactly what got him (and a great many others) into the league in the first place.
i think the real rub on this whole issue is the notion of the "letter of the law" vs. the "spirit of the law". there's no question that the spirit of the law is to discourage, prevent and ultimately eliminate intentional, dirty hits. the unfortunate effect it will
have (because of this robotic obsession with, and enforcement of, the letter, and not spirit, of the law) is that it is going to ultimately change the nature of the game from one that celebrates and
embraces physical play to one that reluctantly accepts it as a cost of doing business.

hope will accept the changes he needs to make if only because he going to get himself suspended at a really inconvenient time for us. the man is a phenonenal athlete and competitor and simply needs to adapt his style of play to the rules of the league in which he plays and compensates him handsomely. its such a shame that so many find it necessary to cast him as everything wrong with the nfl when all he’s really doing is clinging to exactly what got him (and a great many others) into the league in the first place.
i think the real rub on this whole issue is the notion of the “letter of the law” vs. the “spirit of the law”. there’s no question that the spirit of the law is to discourage, prevent and ultimately eliminate intentional, dirty hits. the unfortunate effect it will
have (because of this robotic obsession with, and enforcement of, the letter, and not spirit, of the law) is that it is going to ultimately change the nature of the game from one that celebrates and
embraces physical play to one that reluctantly accepts it as a cost of doing business.

It's exactly her apparent intelligence combined with her attempts to downplay certain criminal activity in order to benefit her team's image that scares me. I just hope she doesn't carry the same views in all circumstances. Blaming a woman for being raped or domestically abused is dumbfounding.

Thank you, I've been trying to say exactly that for weeks. Rape is rape (though I don't feel Ben is guilty of it), regardless of circumstances. Abuse is abuse, regardless of severity. There is no excuse, no rationale, no reason to downplay or excuse either one.

Deb seems to be a fairly level-headed and intelligent woman. However, she is a bit confused about what being a fan means. She will defend to the death anyone who wears a Steelers uniform, no matter what they do.

I honestly believe that if Rae Carruth had played for Pittsburgh, she'd still be claiming his innocence, or saying that the woman somehow deserved it. If there's a criminal or an idiot on my team (like Chmura, or Johnny Jolly), I call him out as such.

I don't understand how someone who claims to be both a victim of rape and domestic violence in the past can defend wither one under any circumstance. It simply makes no sense.

With your sudden implosion of any logic whatsoever, I thouht you were already listening to Vikings fans....squeaky, tex????

I don't expect much out of you though, I see you rate Ben as a top 7 QB in the league and I've heard you argue Brady is better than Manning...both points make me think you want to get in an argument from knowledgeable fans or you are really that ignorant of the game, not that I expect someone who has never played at any level to have a thorough understanding...just as I don't expect Suzy Kolber to tell me how to get a pre snap read.....so again my expectations for you are very very minimal at best!

And last time I checked we are on a Steelers post, shouldn't this be where you get at least a little support? So far I've seen only you discredit me and seen a half dozen or so people hand you, your arse!

@ Deb

Seeing as you've only responded to me once I am not sure how you gave me a rational explanation or what you were explaining to me. Either way. My comment about people like you concerning me about today's world, I am talking about your "expert" views on domestic abuse.

Deb: "You’re demonstrating the same mentality as those who equate a woman who willingly drinks herself into oblivion and willingly climbs into bed with a man then later claims she was too drunk to consent with a woman who was minding her own business and was suddenly violently attacked. Being slapped does not equal being pummeled with a fist. Being willingly drunk and promiscuous does not equal being violently attacked."

Contact your defense attorney relatives and give them the scenario of rape with or without alcohol. It's still a crime. Don't give me a half-baked distinction between being drunk and promiscuous as not counting.

Along that vein, domestic abuse is domestic abuse whether it's an open handed slap to the face or a punch in the nose. And slapping a woman in the face is no better than punching her in the face. You're still striking the person in an abusive manner. And no, not every man flies off the handle at some point and slaps a woman.

You're arguing degrees and basically blaming women who drink for being raped and not those who rape them. Let me guess, a woman who wears a skirt that is too short in your mind deserves to be raped because she is tempting the man who rapes her by showing too much.

What scares me about you is that you wholeheartedly believe that you are right.

But please, let me know what you were trying to rationally explain to me and I'm sure I will be able to provide an intelligent and insightful counter argument. Just be sure to let me know when you're actually responding.

@ javelina dolie

-------------------------------------------------

Your perspectives couldn't be further from reality. Harrison's facemask met Fitzpatrick in the upper chest. He didn't drive his head nor his helmet into Fitzpatrick in any sense. I've posted the video on here or other posts regarding this topic, so go have a look for yourself. I happened to see it "live" on Sunday and have reviewed the clip multiple times.

You need to be realistic with the speed of the game. The technique Harrison used was appropriate. In fact, why don't you google Ray Anderson and the video he released on October 21st after the initial round of fines were levied for helmet to helmet hits that weekend. He's an effin hypocrite and as biased as one could be when he reviews a hit by Ray Lewis on a defenseless Jet receiver. He starts off his comments on the hit by stating here's a "Great hit by a great player....". WTF is that? Is he being paid on the side to support Ray the Criminal Lewis? More importantly, when you see the hit, you'll quickly realize that poor Ray Anderson is blind. Lewis hits the defender with his head/part of his helmet and "blows him up" big time. Much harder hit than the Harrison-Fitzpatrick hit and to be quite honest, outside of his helmet making contact with the shoulder area of the receiver vs the center of the chest, I don't see why that hit is legitimate and Harrison's hit on Fitzpatrick is NOT legitimate.

Ray Anderson and God-ell are a bunch of panzies trying to change the game for money and no other reason.

Mike Golic, Trent Dilfer and many others on the ESPN lineup of radio and TV experts have all rolled their eyes more than once over the Harrison-Fitzpatrick hit. It WAS a bogus call, an inappropriate fine and just down right BULL-SHIITE.

Next time, get your facts in order, listen to non-biased experts and go look at the video. The league is wishy-washy at best. They need to release non-game videos, game type scenarios where they have players or ex-players demonstrating proper technique. Too much gray, not enough clarity around what constitutes appropriate vs inappropriate hits. Or, as I've simply suggested:

Helmet to Helmet - FINE

Helmet to Helment with "clear intent" to hit with the head - FINE AND SUSPEND

It's pretty clear when a player tries to "spear" another player with the top of their helmet. For the Brees and Fitzpatrick hits, Harrison did neither. They were both text book hits. He's being targeted, plain and simple.

————————————————-

Your perspectives couldn’t be further from reality. Harrison’s facemask met Fitzpatrick in the upper chest. He didn’t drive his head nor his helmet into Fitzpatrick in any sense. I’ve posted the video on here or other posts regarding this topic, so go have a look for yourself. I happened to see it “live” on Sunday and have reviewed the clip multiple times.

You need to be realistic with the speed of the game. The technique Harrison used was appropriate. In fact, why don’t you google Ray Anderson and the video he released on October 21st after the initial round of fines were levied for helmet to helmet hits that weekend. He’s an effin hypocrite and as biased as one could be when he reviews a hit by Ray Lewis on a defenseless Jet receiver. He starts off his comments on the hit by stating here’s a “Great hit by a great player….”. WTF is that? Is he being paid on the side to support Ray the Criminal Lewis? More importantly, when you see the hit, you’ll quickly realize that poor Ray Anderson is blind. Lewis hits the defender with his head/part of his helmet and “blows him up” big time. Much harder hit than the Harrison-Fitzpatrick hit and to be quite honest, outside of his helmet making contact with the shoulder area of the receiver vs the center of the chest, I don’t see why that hit is legitimate and Harrison’s hit on Fitzpatrick is NOT legitimate.

Or, as I’ve simply suggested:

Helmet to Helmet – FINE

Helmet to Helment with “clear intent” to hit with the head – FINE AND SUSPEND

It’s pretty clear when a player tries to “spear” another player with the top of their helmet. For the Brees and Fitzpatrick hits, Harrison did neither. They were both text book hits. He’s being targeted, plain and simple.

Just guessing, but I suspect my knowledge of domestic abuse is a little more thorough than yours. As I've said, I'm tired of playing games with boys. I haven't excused ANY form of domestic abuse, but slaps and punches are different forms of violence, just as punches and gunshots are different forms of violence. Sorry if that's over your head.

Don't recall making a racist reference to you specifically, but since I rarely use it, there must have been a reason. Have used it with someone who says Harrison's only good for bagging groceries. Funny, but I never hear those comments about Brady or Manning or any other caucasian players no matter how annoyed commenters get with them. And I do believe the constant "thug" references have racial undertones because, again, those references are never used with caucasian players. Sorry, but racism is a factor in our society whether or not we choose to acknowledge it. And it's not necessarily a conscious thing.

Right now, the most disturbing thing on this thread is the post from

6isgr8lamehaters

respecting your comments and thanking you for your honesty.

Being new to PFT, this individual has no idea that he's dealing with a completely irrational and obsessed Steeler hater who dogs our threads continually, accusing us of buying Super Bowls. He actually thinks you are capable of sincerety. God bless him. Your comments about me regarding the Roethlisberger case are LIES stemming from bitterness over my repeated contradiction of your Area 51 conspiracy theories.

As I posted throughout the summer, I'm a journalist who has covered many legal cases, and my brother and sister-in-law are criminal defense attorneys. The presumption of innocence is bedrock to me, no matter WHO is involved. That's why even though I'm an Alabama diehard who hates Auburn, I've persistently posted the same defense of Cam Newton that I posted of Ben Roethlisberger--innocent until someone produces evidence to the contrary.

I thoroughly investigated--because it's what I do for a living--the Nevada accusation against Ben. And since the evidence there clearly points to his innocence, yes, I doubted the veracity of the new claim. It's difficult to imagine that a man innocent of one rape accusation would suddenly go out and rape someone else. But I most certainly did not jump to his defense five minutes after the accusation. I repeatedly posted that we would have to presume him innocent but wait until the evidence was in.

I researched the case, reading every witness statement, police document, report, and even discussing the case with attorneys and other specialists, including researching the DNA testing involved. My conclusions are exactly in line with the prosecutor's--whose 71-minute summation I've listened to multiple times to make sure I made note of every detail.

I took that kind of time because I'm a rape survivor and have spent YEARS working with other rape victims and needed to be certain in my own mind and heart that our team was not harboring a rapist. YOU KNOW EVERY BIT OF THIS. You're just taking this opportunity to pour salt in old wounds because the newbies don't and might buy your BS until they learn better. Considering the really monstrous rape-related stuff posted at me by the lynch mob because I kept sticking to the case facts and how long it took for all that to die down, it took a special kind of evil for you to post those lies about me today. You are one very sick puppy. Do not ever address me again.

I respect your admission and realistic stance on the Harrison fines ... probably being targeted and yes probably being fined for hits that shouldn't be flagged nor fined.

However, I completely disagree with you that the NFL front office is being completely transparent about their motives. The wonderful world of business, including the NFL, is all about the almighty dollar. Roger God-dell and Ray Anderson are both trying to change the game forever to soften the physical nature of football, extend the season and for what reason? They want to make more money and they want to convince other countries to jump in to a less violent, more offensive / less defensive sport.

As fans, we all need to unite at some point and indicate that the NFL without physical play and the direct neutering of strong defense, is not the NFL we will support.

I would suggest the following:

Helmet to helmet - FINED
Intentional helmet to helmet - FINED AND SUSPENDED

Harrison's hits on Brees and Fitzpatrick were legitimate. Please listen to Mike and Mike, Trent Dilfer and other non-Steeler loving / non-biased experts who all believe the league is taking this too far.

The easiest thing for God-ell and his cronies to do is target Harrison. You've indirectly admitted it, now the league should also.

Thanks for your honesty!
