Jets suddenly lose starter Leonhard to “severe” shin injury

Jets coach Rex Ryan says the Jets were enjoying their “best practice of the season” Friday until disaster struck.

Safety Jim Leonhard had to be carted off the field with a “severe” shin injury.  Ryan assumes at this point that Leonhard suffered a broken bone, although tests have to be taken.

“Emotionally, it was a letdown,” Ryan said via Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger.

The Jets have enjoyed good health of late, but Leonhard is a valuable piece to the defense and special teams as a punt returner.  Brodney Pool and Eric Smith will start at safety.   Antonio Cromarite, Jerricho Cotchery, and Santonio Holmes are options on punts.

UPDATE: The team is disappointed in cornerback Kyle Wilson, so special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff says Cotchery will get the call on punts.  Holmes and Cromartie will get involved with two deep returns.

A Jets injury. You don’t see that very often.

Leonhard is an excellent player. If there was any doubt about a TE heavy offense by the Patriots on Monday it should be gone now. I also feel better about starting BenJarvus Green-Ellis on my fantasy team.

This should be an awesome game. I hate to admit it, but I actually get a kick out of Rex Ryan. And it seems like the Jets finally have a good young quarterback. The rivalry is stepping it up a notch.

Meh, he has tended to be a liability in coverage.

Careful, the staff here might get a broken shin for sucking off Rex Ryan too.

Cool crystal ball, bro. Where did you get it? I want one too!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

As I keep saying …. if the NFL goes to an 18 game regular season plus playoffs … the Super Bowl will be played by free agents signed off the street that week.

Football is crazy violent. An 18 game season is a bad idea that only came into existence because of the incredible, incredible greed of the owners who already have the taxpayers building their billion dollar palace stadiums for them but are intent on killing the golden goose.

    1) Will the owners pay the players more? They will fight not to.

    2) Will they increase rosters to 60 or 65? They will fight not to.

    3) Will they raise ticket prices? — OF COURSE. 18 game season tickets will cost more which means more blackouts.

Leonhard, despite being a part of that scumbag organization, is a great player and I hope he recovers from this.

Now if that 5 foot pile of crap Fireman Ed got hurt (again), I would probably buy the Pay Per View to see the footage.

    @ 4sacroc

I disagree. I think they will only lose to the Pats and go to San Diego as a 13-3 wildcard. My guess is that my Chargers will be hosting at 10-6.

Luckiest team in the NFL suddenly getting less likely. What are the chances the Pats, Steelers and Bears let them win and back into the playoffs like last year?

look at all the haters on here as soon as they hear something bad about the jets where were all these comments during the wins

  18. RexCanCoach says: Dec 3, 2010 4:32 PM

sucks but B. Poole will step up. Rex will have the DB’s foaming at the mouth for this game.

Mark Sanchez will be the new sheriff in town in about 80 hrs…and Brady will be showing off his stylish new Aussie boots, how sweet.

  19. jetsarestacked says: Dec 3, 2010 4:33 PM

Love jimmy but he has been crappy this year especially in coverage..not worried at all.

  20. mistrezzrachael says: Dec 3, 2010 6:09 PM

    RexCanCoach….

You’re putting Sanchez in Brady’s class???????

Of all the things I’ve heard from jet fans…that may be the dumbest of them all…

Hope they all break their legs? Scumbag of an organization? Glad a Jet got hurt??

You are neanderthals. The Jets are have the best record in the league, and we see that upsets you. If the Jets win on Monday night are you going to blame it on the refs, or just go back to posting that Rex Ryan is fat?

Yes, Jets fans laugh at your pathetic words.
